Insider breaks down how T.J. Watt's record deal with Steelers came together

Fans may have been growing nervous over the months-long T.J. Watt contract talks — but insider Mike Garafolo reported the same can't be said for the Steelers organization.
On Thursday's episode of NFL Network's The Insiders, Garafolo discussed how training camp impacted Watt's new three-year, $123 million contract extension — and how the Steelers were confident throughout the negotiations that a deal would get done:
"I remember talking to people in the [Steelers] building then, and I mentioned this on The Insiders, they said, 'Look, [Watt] probably just doesn't want to come to minicamp. Like, he'll be here for training camp because we feel really good about the offer we put out there right now. It is right there at the top of the market.'
"At the time, Myles Garrett had been done at $40 million dollars per year, so they understood what they were going to have to do here. And nobody was panicking because the thought was, 'Once we get closer to training camp, that will be the pressure point that eventually gets this done.'"
Garafolo's report that the Steelers weren't 'panicking' is supported by Mike Tomlin's previously unwavering stance on Watt remaining with the team — and there's little evidence to suggest Pittsburgh was ever nervous about a deal not getting done.
Still, it's exciting, to say the least, that both sides can finally put this chapter behind them and focus on training camp — which kicks off next week on July 23, when the Steelers report to Latrobe.

Spartan Stadium gets minor upgrades, updates ahead of upcoming 2025 season

It appears the updates to Spartan Stadium are going to be wrapped up just in time for opening kickoff later this month. Spartan Stadium has gone through a facelift this offseason, with some minimal but notable updates to the home of Michigan State football. The official Michigan State University social media account posted a few pictures of the updates being made to Spartan Stadium this offseason, with the notable items being related to the scoreboards and east side of the stadium. In the post below, you'll see that the Spartan helmet logo has been updated on the two scoreboards on the south side of Spartan Stadium. Additionally, one notable fan account -- OdellBretthamJr -- pointed out that the east side of the stadium (the worst looking spot of the stadium) has been painted to make it look better. Check out the pictures of the new look Spartan Stadium below: As I mentioned off the top, these are minor updates but certainly nice touches. Especially the east side that got a new paint job. Michigan State will open its doors to Spartan Stadium for the first time this season on August 29 in the season-opener against Western Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on FS1. Steelers sign DB Daryl Porter Jr.

The Steelers signed the son of one of their former draft choices on Tuesday. The team announced the addition of defensive back Daryl Porter Jr. to the roster. They waived tight end Kevin Foelsch in a corresponding move. Porter signed with the Bills after going undrafted out of Miami this year. He was waived by the Bills ahead of training camp, however, and will now try to do something that his father wasn't able to do. The Steelers drafted safety Daryl Porter Sr. in the sixth round in 1997, but he never appeared in a regular season game for the team. He did go on to play 55 games for the Lions, Bills, and Titans.

Jayden Daniels' mom criticized by ex-ESPNer after Commanders training camp interview

One ex-ESPN sportscaster thinks Jayden Daniels' mom needs to take a step back. 'She needs a hobby,' former 'SportsCenter' and 'Golic and Wingo' co-host host Trey Wingo posted on X Monday after the Commanders quarterback's mother, Regina Jackson, made a cameo in her son's NFL Network interview at training camp Saturday. Jackson is Daniels' money manager, although not his agent, and the two have an extremely close relationship. 'She's a mom first, and she's always going to be there to uplift me but if I'm doing wrong, she's gonna let me know,' Daniels said in the NFL Network interview with Jackson standing behind him. 'Even though I'm 24 years old, I'm still a grown man but I still gotta listen to my mom at some point.' Jackson went on to say: 'I'm very proud of him. The athlete, the man you guys see and you always need your mommas around, so.' When asked if she's at Commanders training camp each day, Jackson said she wasn't, quipping: 'Trust me, they'll tell you when I'm here.' 3 Jayden Daniels' mother, Regina Jackson, with her son in an interview on NFL Network. @nflnetwork/X That exchange was enough to elicit the post from Wingo, which received 29,000 likes but plenty of pushback. 'I promise this is not what you want, Trey,' said one user on X in a response that received 953 likes. 3 Former ESPN co-host Trey Wingo on April 24, 2019. 'But when one has a clear image, great reputation and has a close relationship with a parent, suddenly we don't want that. Odd isn't it?' 'Seems like a mother and her son get along,' posted a third.
