Megaworld to spend P2.5B to redevelop Eastwood City

GMA Network11-06-2025
Listed township developer Megaworld Corp. is set to spend P2.5 billion to redevelop Eastwood City, its first township development spanning 18.5 hectares that was first launched in 1997.
Megaworld said the redevelopment will involve upgrading its commercial areas and lifestyle malls including Eastwood Citywalk, Eastwood Mall, and the Eastwood Mall Open Park, the ongoing enhancement of Eastwood Richmonde Hotel.
This also includes the phased refurbishment of office towers, which started with the renovation of the IBM Plaza which was recently completed.
Renovations are set to be rolled out in the coming months, covering upgrades to the lobbies, facilities, and amenities of additional office buildings and residential towers.
'Eastwood City holds a special place in our history as Megaworld's very first township, and this redevelopment reflects our commitment to keeping it vibrant, relevant, and future-ready,' Megaworld president Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso said in an emailed statement.
'We are not only preserving its legacy but also reinventing it into a township of the future — setting an even higher standard for integrated urban living,' she added.
Megaworld earlier this year announced plans to expand with at least two more townships in over 300 hectares of land in growth areas in Luzon and Visayas.
The company's real estate portfolio includes residential condominium units, subdivision lots and townhouses, as well as office projects and retail spaces. Its businesses include real estate sales, leasing of office spaces, and management of hotel operations.
Its subsidiaries include Richmonde Hotel Group International Limited, Eastwood Cyber One Corp., Empire East Land Holdings Inc., Global-Estate Resorts Inc., and Bonifacio West Development Corp. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

Transport groups push for provisional P1 fare hike

Several transport groups have sought a provisional P1 fare hike following the big-time oil price hike of about P1 per liter this week. According to Joseph Morong's Wednesday report on '24 Oras,' the recent oil price hike caused diesel prices to reach P51.40 to P70.45 per liter, and gasoline prices, P50.50 to P66.55 per liter. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, seven transport organizations which dubbed themselves the "Magnificent 7" met with Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairman Teofilo Guadiz III. 'Pang apat na taas na ito, sa computation ko, nasa P4.50 na ang itinaas ng diesel kada litro… hindi na makakaya. Lahat sa modern at sa traditional. Piso lang, malayo, malapit,' said Obet Martin, Pasang Masda president. (This is the fourth increase . Based on my computation, diesel has gone up by around P4.50 per liter. It's becoming unbearable. It affects both modern and traditional jeepneys. We propose a P1 fare hike for both short and long trips.) The groups said they will file the petition next week. However, a commuter expressed opposition to the proposed fare hike, noting that it will take more from their savings. Meanwhile, another commuter agreed to the proposed fare hike, saying that it's better than having no public transportation. The LTFRB opposed the idea of a fare hike. 'Kasi may pagkukunan ako eh. At ayoko sanang mabigatan yung mga tao (because I have a source, and I didn't want to burden the people),' Guadiz said. He added that a P2.5 billion fuel subsidy is allocated in the government's budget, which can be given to the following transportation operators: Tricycle P1,000 Delivery Trucks P1,500 UV Express P5,000 Traditional Jeep P7,000 Modern Jeep P8,000 - P9,000 However, the voucher can only be distributed once crude oil prices reach $80 per barrel in the world market.'Kung hindi mag-reach yun $80, ibig sabihin, hindi pa gaanong mataas ang presyo ng gasolina. But just the same, we will hear their petition. There might be other reasons, like yung pagtaas ng cost of living, yung sahod ng mga empleyado, yung piyesa ng mga gamit nila,' Guadiz said.(If it doesn't reach $80, it means fuel prices aren't that costly yet. But just the same, we will hear their petition. There might be other reasons, like the rising cost of living, employee wages, or the price of spare parts for their vehicles.)

Habagat hits power services of 167,000 Meralco customers

Philippine Coast Guard personnel conduct rescue operations in Valenzuela City on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 as the Philippines reels from the effects of the southwest monsoon. Courtesy: Philippine Coast Guard/ Facebook Some 167,000 customers of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) have been hit by power outages due to the southwest monsoon or habagat, most of whom are located in flooded areas, as the distribution utility works to restore services. In an advisory, Meralco said most of the affected customers were in Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Cavite, with the rest in Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22. Nearly 98% or over 163,000 are located in flooded areas. Meralco said 11,000 customers affected by power cuts as of 12 noon on Monday, July 21. "We ask our customers for patience and understanding as heavy floods have triggered disruptions in power services," Meralco vice president Joe Zaldarriaga said. "Rest assured that the safety of our customers and line crews is our top priority and we will immediately restore power in the affected areas once the floodwaters recede and it is safe to do so," he added. Meralco also called on the public to practice safety measures during floods—ensure that the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker is off; unplug appliances; remove mud and dirt from service equipment using rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes; and ensure that all electrical wires, connectors, and other wiring devices are completely dry. Meralco constructs, operates, and maintains electric distribution systems in the cities and municipalities of Bulacan, Cavite, Metro Manila, and Rizal, as well as certain areas in the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, and Quezon. The firm counts as subsidiaries and associates Vantage Energy Solutions and Management Inc. and MeridianX Inc., acting as retail electricity suppliers in Luzon and the Visayas. State weather bureau PAGASA has issued a red rainfall warning for Metro Manila, Bataan, and parts of Cavite, indicating the possibility of serious flooding in flood-prone areas. An orange rainfall warning was also raised over Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan and Cavite (Alfonso, Amadeo, General Emilio Aguinaldo, Indang, Magallanes, Maragondon, Mendez, Silang, Tagaytay, Ternate, Trece Martires, Carmona, Gen. Mariano Alvarez, Naic, Tanza). A yellow rainfall warning was likewise raised on Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, and Quezon. The southwest monsoon or habagat is expected to continue to bring cloudy skies and rains over parts of the country. PAGASA is also monitoring two low pressure areas (LPAs) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, with one having a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
