Nolan McLean earns first MLB victory as Mets edge Mariners

August 16 - Nolan McLean pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings to earn a victory in his major league debut as the New York Mets topped the visiting Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Saturday. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso had run-scoring doubles for the Mets, who snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their past 17 games. Seattle's Eugenio Suarez broke up the shutout bid with a solo shot to left field with one out in the ninth. McLean, a right-hander who was a third-round pick out of Oklahoma State in 2023, allowed just two hits -- a two-out single by Cal Raleigh in the third and a leadoff single by Dominic Canzone in the fifth. McLean walked four and struck out eight. Mets closer Edwin Diaz, a former Mariner, worked the final two innings for his 24th save of the season. McLean, who was a two-way player until focusing exclusively on pitching this season, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a highlight-reel defensive play. After walking J.P. Crawford and Cole Young to open the third, Raleigh lined a single to right to load the bases. Julio Rodriguez hit a hard one-hopper up the middle that McLean reached behind his back to snare, then threw to second base to start an inning-ending double play. Mariners starter Bryan Woo (10-7) gave up one run on six hits over six innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts. The game's first run came in the third. Brett Baty, the No. 9 hitter in the Mets' lineup, grounded a single to right just out of the reach of diving second baseman Young, and Lindor followed with a double into the right-field corner, with Baty scoring from first. The Mets tacked on two runs in the seventh, as Baty led off with a single to right off reliever Caleb Ferguson and stole second. Baty advanced to third on Lindor's single to left and scored on Juan Soto's sacrifice fly to center. Lindor was thrown out at the plate by Randy Arozarena on Brandon Nimmo's single to left. Alonso greeted reliever Carlos Vargas with a double down the left-field line to score Nimmo. The teams will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at the annual MLB Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa. --Field Level Media

Myles Straw's career day leads Blue Jays to blowout of Rangers

August 16 - Myles Straw was 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Texas Rangers 14-2 on Saturday afternoon. It was Straw's first career multi-homer game while his four hits tied his career high. Daulton Varsho was 3-for-3 with a two-run blast and a walk for the Blue Jays, who have won the first two games of the three-game series. Davis Schneider had three hits and four RBIs with his three-run homer coming against Rangers first baseman Rowdy Tellez, who pitched the seventh and eighth. Jake Burger had three hits and two RBIs for the Rangers, who have lost eight of nine. Toronto erupted for six runs in the second against Patrick Corbin (6-9). Bo Bichette led off with a single, took third on Varsho's one-out single and scored on Ernie Clement's double to left. Straw homered to left center on an 0-1 cutter down the middle. Andres Gimenez and Schneider singled, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked with two outs to load the bases. Bichette doubled on a drive that glanced off center fielder Wyatt Langford's glove. Two runs scored and Guerrero was out at home to end the inning. Texas scored once in the third against Eric Lauer (8-2). Sam Haggerty walked, stole second and scored on Burger's single. After a one-out walk in the third, Jon Gray replaced Corbin and allowed Straw's fourth homer of the season. Corbin allowed seven runs, eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Varsho lined a homer to right in the fifth after Kirk walked. Another run scored in the inning when Schneider walked with the bases loaded. Gray left with an apparent injury and Luis Curvelo took over. Lauer walked Josh Jung to start the sixth and was replaced by Tommy Nance. The Toronto starter allowed one run, four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Tellez allowed a single and hit a batter before Schneider homered to left in the seventh. Toronto catcher Tyler Heineman pitched the ninth and allowed Burger's RBI single. George Springer (concussion) returned to the Toronto lineup and was 1-for-4. He batted leadoff for the first time this season. Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien (wrist) did not play Saturday after he was hit by a pitch on Friday. -Field Level Media

Cade Cavalli earns first MLB victory as Nationals blank Phillies

August 16 - Cade Cavalli recorded his first major-league win after tossing seven scoreless innings, fueling the host Washington Nationals to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Making his fourth career start and third in his return from Tommy John surgery, Cavalli (1-0) scattered seven hits and struck out five without walking a batter. The first-round pick of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma fanned Edmundo Sosa on five pitches to end his outing. Washington's James Wood ripped a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to provide all the offense that the 27-year-old Cavalli would need. Josh Bell had two of the seven hits for the Nationals, who have won three of their last four games overall and improved to 4-5 in the season series against the National League East-leading Phillies. Dylan Crews worked a one-out walk in the fifth inning and advanced to third on a single by Brady House. Wood ripped a 3-2 fastball from Taijuan Walker (4-6) into the right-center field gap to plate Crews and House and stake Washington to a 2-0 lead. Cavalli kept Philadelphia at bay before being relieved by Jose Ferrer, who retired the first four batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto slapped a single into left that outfielder Wood misplayed. Ferrer, however, induced Brandon Marsh to ground out and struck out Harrison Bader to secure his second save of the season. Philadelphia's Trea Turner recorded his second three-hit performance of the series. He is 8-for-14 in the set and riding a six-game hitting streak. The Phillies, however, went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left six on base en route to losing for the fourth time in their last five outings. Walker was saddled with the hard-luck loss despite permitting two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. --Field Level Media
