Eight people killed in barrage of gunfire on Ecuador nightclub
Law enforcement arrived on the scene following an emergency call alerting them to a shooting, and found 'several people wounded and seven bodies', said Javier Chango, the police colonel, at a press conference on Sunday, adding that an eighth person died in the hospital.
The gunmen arrived in two pickup trucks and opened fire on people drinking outside the nightclub at 1:15am local time in Santa Lucía, which has a population of 38,000, in the Guayas province.
Among the dead was the nightclub owner Jorge Urquizo, who was the brother of Santa Lucia's mayor.
Police found 800 cartridge cases at the scene.
After the attack the gunmen got back in their trucks and fled along an 'unknown route', Chango said.
The local police picked up a man driving a truck who was carrying a revolver, but were not able to determine whether he was involved in the attack.
The police said they have yet to work out a motive for the shooting.
The bodies of the dead were taken to a morgue in the neighboring city of Daule.
The office of Santa Lucía's mayor Ubaldo Urquizo expressed condolences on Sunday.
'We unite in sorrow and prayer for this violent attack that has struck our community,' the office said on social media.
Ecuador, once a peaceful haven between the world's two top cocaine exporters Colombia and Peru, has seen violence erupt in recent years as gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control.
More than 70% of all cocaine produced in the world now passes through Ecuador's ports, according to government data.
Guayas is one of four provinces where the president, Daniel Noboa, recently declared a two-month state of emergency to combat gang violence.
However despite a stepped-up military presence authorities have not stemmed the bloodshed.
More than 4,051 homicides were recorded between January and May, according to official figures. Analysts believe it is the most violent start to a year in the country's recent history.

Target shooter 'coldly executed girl, 4, in back seat of car after making her watch as he murdered her grandpa'
A crazed gunman ran into naked into a portaloo after allegedly shooting dead a Target worker, a grandfather, and his young granddaughter. Ethan Blaine Nieneker, 32, was subdued by police tasers during his mad dash after his alleged rampage through the store in northern Austin. Target worker Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, was killed along with Adam Chow, 65, and his four-year-old granddaughter. Austin police alleged Nieneker made the little girl watch him murder Chow and wound his wife before he callously executed her. The department released his booking photograph on Tuesday, showing him staring straight at the camera with several fresh cuts on his face. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a press conference on Monday that he stole two cars after the shooting, and wrecked the first one while fleeing from cops. Nieneker was described as white and wearing a Hawaiian shirt at the time of the shooting. Police said they received calls about the shooting 15 minutes later and rushed to the scene within four minutes. They found three people bleeding out with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Medics pronounced two of the victims dead at the scene, while a third died from their injuries while being rushed to hospital. The gunman fled the scene in a vehicle he stole from the parking lot at the Target store, which police said they believe belonged to one of the victims. Davis said he 'wrecked' the car and leapt into another vehicle from a Volkswagen dealership nearby, and continued leading police on a chase. Cops pursued the shooter for 18 miles through the heart of Austin. They caught him in the south of the city where they deployed a taser before taking him into custody. The Daily Mail has also unearthed photographs of Nieneker from social media, showing him grinning with friends at social events, posing while wearing a Covid-style mask by a trash bin, and posing beside a fireplace. Another Facebook image shows the alleged gunman holding a large brown leaf in front of his face and creepily peering over it, while a fifth photo shows Nieneker wearing an American flag as a bandana. Police Chief Davis told reporters on Monday evening that Nieneker has a history of mental illness and a prior criminal history. Records obtained by the Daily Mail show he has been arrested numerous times since 2011, including an apprehension in August 2015 for assaulting a family member. Nieneker was also previously arrested for driving while intoxicated twice, criminal mischief and a violation of a bond or protective order. A suspected motive for the shootings and the names and ages of the victims have not yet been disclosed. Shoppers and employees at Target said they ran for cover when they heard gunshots ring out in the parking lot. 'I was inside the store, but then I hear on the radio like shots fired, so then they just told us "active shooter..." so we just ran outside, we told guests to get out,' Target employee Freyen Sagastume told KXAN. 'I thought that this only happened like in the news and stuff and then like I kind of just froze at first, but then I saw everyone running.' Police have charged a man with a brutal double murder after a pregnant woman and her partner were found dead in Melbourne - the father-to-be's head severed and gruesomely mounted on a spike. Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was allegedly killed alongside her 50-year-old partner Andrew Gunn at their Mount Waverley home in Melbourne 's south-east just before 10pm on Monday night. Heavily armed police swarmed the Adrienne Crescent property at 9.55pm on Monday after a neighbour heard yells and called triple-0. Police allegedly discovered the man's mutilated body beside the dead a woman inside the unit in Melbourne's southeast but pair have yet to be formally identified. A 34-year-old homeless man with two large dogs was arrested shortly afterwards at nearby Westall train station about 1.40am on Tuesday, and he has since been charged with murder. The station is just 6km from the small unit. The man charged over the killings was allegedly known to the couple, and one of the victims lived in the small unit. Ms Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant when she died. Sinister graffiti was also found scrawled outside the Mount Waverley unit where the couple were allegedly murdered, as homicide detectives scour the scene Their next of kin have been informed and post mortems will be held on Wednesday for the dead pair. They are still trying to establish a link with the man in custody. Detectives said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage, but said a weapon, although not a firearm, was used in the alleged murder. The street has been cordoned off by police as homicide detectives continue their investigation. Detectives are now probing if the graffiti outside - which includes 'U R Gay', 'Enough is Enough', 'Betrayal' and 'Karma' - is linked to the horrific scene found inside. The apparently threatening messages were daubed on the walls in luminous yellow-green and black spray paint, as well as on the property's fence. The motive for the alleged killings is unknown, but reports suggest drugs may have been a factor. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas from the Homicide Squad said police received several calls regarding the incident at the address prior to the grim discovery. 'Police were called at about 9.20pm in relation to a welfare check at the address based on some yelling that was heard from the property,' he said. 'A second call was then made that suggested it was perhaps more urgent than the first call and police arrived minutes later, and obviously they found the male and female inside the premises deceased.' Det Insp Thomas said heavily armed specialist officers, assisted by the police helicopter, tracked the arrested man to the station, where he was taken into custody. 'The person that we took into custody was in the company of two large dogs, I think that would look fairly obvious to people who may have been in the area,' he added Det Insp Thomas added forensic crews and investigators would be at the scene most of the day, and counselling was being offered to those living in neighbouring units. One neighbour said he did not know the people at the house and had never heard of any trouble or police attending the unit prior to last night. 'It's a quiet area,' the man said. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed investigators were probing the graffiti. 'Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night,' the spokesperson said.
