Ranchi: Over 70,000 property owners falling under the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) limits did not pay holding taxes for the 2024-25 financial year (FY), the civic body officials said.
Out of the Rs 83 crore holding tax that was to be received by the RMC, Rs 80.64 crore holding tax was paid by the 1.67 crore domestic and business property holders till March 31 this year, the civic body added.
D
eputy municipal commissioner of the RMC, Gautam Prasad Sahu, said, "Revenue shortfall due to non-payment of holding taxes stands at Rs 20 crore, including the outstanding payments dating back to the 2019-20 FY."
Officials said the revenue gap has affected the RMC's 2025-26 FY budget. "We issue notices to defaulters at regular intervals, yet payment is unsatisfactory. We will now take necessary enforcement actions. Utility services like water supply and garbage collection may be discontinued for long-time defaulters," he added.
The RMC is also offering up to a 10% rebate for early payments in the first quarter, issued through digital and doorstep collection channels.

Can't store groundwater? Companies handed list of ponds for upkeep
Noida: Noida Authority has issued a list of 10 ponds in various villages of the district to be maintained by private players, who need to meet their groundwater recharge obligations. According to an order of the NGT in 2022, waterbodies were supposed to be rejuvenated, and it was made obligatory on the part of commercial firms having more than 300 square meters of land parcel to have water recharge structures either through rain harvesting or through ponds. The pond rejuvenation effort stems from a case filed with the NGT by environmentalist Abhist Kumar Gupta. The petitioner submitted a list of nearly 200 water bodies and ponds encroached or left in poor condition, resulting in poor groundwater recharge. Anjali Rai, nodal officer from the groundwater department, approached the Noida Authority in January this year to inform them that several private players who were issued NoCs from the NGT for using groundwater were mandated to install water harvesting structures on their plots to recharge the groundwater. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Some of the establishments informed that since their water harvesting structure was unable to provide adequate recharge, they would like to get access to ponds and mitigate their obligations," Rai wrote in her letter. She attached a list of such private players. M/s Subros Limited requested four ponds, while M/s Goodluck Company placed a requirement for two ponds. Dr Wilmar Schwabe India and M/s Best Food India were the other two to raise a demand for one pond each. The net requirement of ponds by these entities was nearly 15 hectares. According to the list released by the Noida Authority, the net size of the ten ponds is nearly 4.1 hectares, indicating that there remains a shortfall of 10 hectares of pond area requisitioned by the private parties. Gupta said that at least these ponds, once rejuvenated, would add to the groundwater recharge potential of the district.

MSIL to revamp chit fund biz through app, eyes Rs 10K-cr mkt
Bengaluru: Karnataka govt is revamping Mysore Sales International Ltd's (MSIL) chit fund operations aiming to generate up to Rs 10,000 crore annually in a move that seeks to formalise and scale up the state's presence in the informal savings market. Industries minister MB Patil held a meeting with MSIL officials late Tuesday evening to chart a new course for the state-owned entity. "The present chit fund business is roughly Rs 500 crore annually, while Kerala has an annual turnover of Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 70,000 crore. Karnataka's aim is to increase the business to Rs 10,000 crore," said an industries department official present at the meeting. To drive this transformation, the state will launch a mobile app and build a dedicated agent network to bring formal structure and transparency to the chit fund operations. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru MSIL managing director Manoj Kumar said the initiative will make chit funds safe, secure and accessible to all sections of society. "While MSIL was in the chit fund business for over two decades, it is only known to be a supplier of liquor in the state. Now, we're revamping our brand and opening MSIL chit funds, which will have a corpus of anywhere between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1 crore," he said. Kumar said the mobile app — already tested — is ready for rollout. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It will allow members to manage subscriptions, track payments and handle accounts. "MSIL managed as much as Rs 500 crore through books till recently. Now, with the mobile application being developed, we expect it to be seamless and secure through digital transactions," he added. To extend its reach, MSIL will recruit agents at district and taluk levels. "We are considering enrolling retired bankers at the district levels to act as the foramen of the chit fund business and deploy agents with the incentive, apart from a 5% commission," Kumar said. Among the products planned is flagship Micro Chits, aimed at serving financially excluded sections of society. "The revamp is to ensure there is financial inclusion of those who cannot approach banks for credit or savings. In an unstable market, the Karnataka govt is leveraging its name for the chit funds to be floated by MSIL," said Patil. The state hopes that by bringing legitimacy and digital infrastructure to the chit fund space, MSIL can become a trusted financial platform — moving far beyond its liquor-retailing legacy.
