Rath Para activity peaks in run-up to festival
Kolkata: Digambar Malik, 57, is very busy these days. His smartphone keeps buzzing as he answers calls from Rathyatra organisers from traditional homes and clubs, asking for updates on the progress of work and the date of delivery.
Between calls, Malik and his team create three-dimensional chariots out of split bamboo or cane from hand-drawn sketches on the streets.
For Malik and 40 others like him from Ramesh Chandra Dutta Street off Girish Park metro station and Liberty cinema hall — prominently known as Rath Para — this is the busiest season before the all-important Durga Puja. The artisans together supply around 800 chariots and their accessories to homes and clubs across Bengal.
"Big raths are usually ordered by Jagannath temples and various clubs. We just delivered one chariot to Chinsurah. There's been a sharp rise in demand for designer chariots this year from areas like Serampore and Uttarpara," said Malik. While the small ones come within the price range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, the bigger ones cost around Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000.
"The orders have peaked in the last two years. There was a slump in demand during the Covid years, but the situation seems to have changed in the last two years.
This year, the orders have doubled, and almost all 40 artisans out here are making anything between 20 to 25 chariots this year," said Boikuntho Majhi, another artisan, who is in this profession since Class 6.
What has made Rath Para more popular this year is a group of young members in the family of the artisans who have turned into social media content creators. They have been making reels and videos of the para and the process of construction.
"I made a video on my own neighbourhood showcasing our artisans in 2022, which gained immense traction. Eventually, creators started noticing this place, and they began shooting vlogs and making reels. Many such videos have gone viral. The demand has also shot up," said Abhishek Ghati, a content creator from the area.
Biswanath Maity, another artisan, acknowledged the social media presence leading to a rise in orders.
"There's been a good demand this year with more people discovering the rath bazaar through social media and influencers. It feels nice," he said.
Equally busy are 35 artisans at Canal South Road in north Kolkata, known as the hub of smaller chariots that kids in every household love to pull. The prices range from Rs 50 to Rs 150 in the wholesale market.
There are artisans like Prasenjit Saha, who make and sell fancy chariots priced at anything between Rs 650 to Rs 950. These are sold at anything between Rs 900 to Rs 1,500 in the retail market.

But like most films, it faced a dip on its first Monday despite the strong weekend performance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A strong weekend followed by a Monday dip According to early estimates by Sacnilk, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' earned Rs 27.25 crore on Sunday, its biggest single-day collection so far. However, the film saw a steep drop on Monday, collecting Rs 8.50 crore. Even with the buzz around it, the film couldn't reach double digits on its first weekday. This brings the total domestic collection to Rs 66.65 crore after four days. While the Monday dip was expected, the film had already done enough to make an impact in its opening weekend. Surpasses Aamir's last film's collection Despite the drop in Monday's collection, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' has already outperformed Aamir Khan's previous film, 'Laal Singh Chaddha', which collected Rs 61.36 crore at the domestic box office. That's a major win for Aamir, as fans and critics had high hopes for his return to the big screen. When compared with Aamir's biggest blockbusters, the film still has a long journey ahead. Here are his highest-grossing films so far, 'Dangal' – Rs 374.43 crore, 'PK' – Rs 340.8 crore, 'Dhoom 3' – Rs 271.07 crore, and '3 Idiots' – Rs 202.47 crore. While 'Sitaare Zameen Par' may not reach these heights, it has already proved itself by getting close to the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide. A new milestone for Genelia Deshmukh It's not just Aamir who has reason to celebrate. The film marks a huge career moment for Genelia Deshmukh. Known for her role in 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na', Genelia now has her highest-grossing film with 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. The film has already surpassed the lifetime collection of her 2008 hit 'Jaane Tu... Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ya Jaane Na', which made around Rs 55.36 crore at the Indian box office. This role is a big moment for Genelia, especially after being away from leading roles in Bollywood for some time. What the film is about 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is directed by R.S. Prasanna. The story follows a basketball coach, played by Aamir, who trains ten differently-abled individuals for a basketball tournament. It's a heartfelt tale of teamwork, growth, and personal transformation for both the coach and the players. The film also features a cast of young talents including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. Genelia Deshmukh plays a significant role in the story alongside Aamir. 'Sitaare Zameen Par': Riteish Deshmukh's Emotional Shoutout For Genelia's Big Win

'Housefull 5' Box Office collection day 18: Akshay Kumar's film slows down, earns Rs 1.15 crore on third Monday
Akshay Kumar's 'Housefull 5' is now facing a steady dip in box office numbers. After enjoying a strong 17-day run, the comedy film is slowly losing its shine, especially after the release of Aamir Khan's new film 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A good start but now slipping 'Housefull 5' opened well and collected a solid Rs 176.10 crore (India net) in its first 17 days. It gave fans of the franchise a familiar dose of comedy and chaos, with a star-studded cast and entertaining moments. However, the box office buzz is now fading. On Day 18, which was the third Monday, the film only earned Rs 1.15 crore, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. Weekend was better, weekdays are tough The film did manage to bring in more audiences over the weekend. On Saturday day 16, it collected Rs 2.5 crore, and on Sunday day 17, the collections rose to Rs 3.5 crore. But Monday's drop suggests that fewer people are heading to the theatres during the week. With this, the total India net collection now stands at Rs 177.25 crore, according to Sacnilk. Competition from Aamir Khan's film The drop in collection for 'Housefull 5' also seems linked to the release of Aamir Khan's 'Sitaare Zameen Par', which hit cinemas on June 20. Since its release, the film has been attracting steady crowds and pulling viewers away from 'Housefull 5'. Low occupancy According to Sacnilk, 'Housefull 5' had an overall Hindi occupancy of 13.32% on Monday, June 23, 2025, across all screenings in India. The morning shows saw a low turnout with just 6.85% occupancy. Audience numbers picked up slightly in the later parts of the day, with 15.23% in the afternoon, 15.34% in the evening, and 15.87% during night shows. That's not all. The film also stars veterans like Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Chunky Panday, Johnny Lever, and Shreyas Talpade. Adding more names to the list are , Ranjeet, Nikitin Dheer, Chitrangda Singh, and Fardeen Khan. As if the competition from 'Sitaare Zameen Par' wasn't enough, 'Housefull 5' now has more challenges coming its way. Upcoming big releases like 'Maa' and 'F1: The Movie' are expected to take over many screens and further cut into its earnings.

Exclusive - Paras Kalnawat opens up about his recent heartbreak; says 'I'm doing much better now, and I'm ready to use those emotions in my performance in Parineetii'
Paras Kalnawat has recently joined the show Parineetii after a 20-year generation leap, taking on the role of Aditya Kashyap, a character who doesn't believe in love. His role is different from his previous sweet and romantic characters, showcasing a more serious side. In an exclusive conversation with Times of India TV, Paras opened up about a recent heartbreak, sharing how he plans to channel those emotions into his performance. He also spoke candidly about the pay cuts in the television industry, his close bond with Shraddha Arya , and his thoughts on possibly joining reality shows like Bigg Boss or Khatron Ke Khiladi. After the pandemic, many people in the industry have talked about financial struggles . What's your view? It's not just TV, almost every industry, including entertainment and corporate sectors, went through a hard time after COVID. Budgets were cut, projects slowed down, and work became less stable. Thankfully, I didn't face major financial problems, but I did notice how things changed. Nobody was ready to invest in newcomers especially and they found it tough. The whole system is still recovering, but I hope things improve soon — not just for actors, but for everyone in the industry. Now that you're back with the channel, what about doing reality shows? Would you say to Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss yes if offered one? Yes, I'm open to it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What to Know About Gas Turbine Production in Mexico (Find Out More) Turbines | Search ads Undo I've been approached before, but I wasn't ready back then. I never say 'never' to anything. Who knows? Maybe next time I'll say yes right away. I like trying new things and I believe there's nothing wrong in doing a reality show, as long as you're real and true to yourself. You've always had a close bond with Shraddha Arya. She's back now on Kumkum Bhagya, and she's a mom! Did you meet her? Shraddha will always be very special to me. She's one of the kindest co-actors I've worked with. On Kundali Bhagya, we truly became like a family. I do regret not meeting her babies yet — I was going through a phase where I wasn't stepping out much. But she did invite me, and I plan to visit her soon and meet the little ones. You said you were in a phase where you didn't step out. What were you going through? Yes, I was going through something personal — a heartbreak, or breakup whatever you say. In a way, it's similar to what my character Aditya is going through in the show. I believe actors need to feel things in real life to show them on screen. Maybe this experience came to me so I could connect more deeply with my character. I'm doing much better now, and I'm ready to use those emotions in my performance. Paras Kalnawat Lashes Out At 'Anupamaa' Treatment
