Luke Plapp in great escape as Italy's Ulissi take Giro lead
Australian Luke Plapp broke away on a 50km solo attack to win a hilly stage eight of the Giro d'Italia yesterday as veteran Italian all-rounder Diego Ulissi grabbed the overall lead.
A series of attacks ensued early in the hilly stage, with the main contenders allowing the escape to make it far enough ahead of them for Plapp to climb the podium as winner and, to the delight of the crowds, drink a considerable amount of the fizzy wine he sprayed over them.
The 24-year-old Jayco-Alula rider from Melbourne shook his head in disbelief at the finish after his first major win following an impressive solo effort in the picture-postcard hills. But just 38sec behind Plapp, third-placed Ulissi gazed at the clock in a nail-biting wait for overnight leader Primoz Roglic to cross the line.
Ulissi had been 4min 01sec down at the start and the main contenders for the title were just a handful of seconds outside that limit, meaning he couldn't celebrate until he knew they had missed the time cut.
'I was going for the stage win, I hadn't thought about the race lead until the fans started to shout about the pink jersey along the road,' Ulissi said.
Ulissi now leads Roglic by 17sec in the overall classification and will ride out in pink Sunday giving home crowds something to cheer.

Jannik Sinner booked himself a second consecutive semi-final appearance at Roland Garros yesterday with a typically ruthless straightsets victory over unseeded Kazakh Alexander Bublik. 'I'm very happy with how I've arrived in the semi-finals, semi-finals in Grand Slams are very special.' World number two Carlos Alcaraz said his last-eight dismantling of Tommy Paul on Tuesday was in part 'inspired' by Sinner and his time-sensitive approach to tennis over the last fortnight. Sinner has spent less than 10 hours on court through his first five matches as he has systematically taken apart his opponents for the loss of very few games. 'He (Sinner) inspired me in some ways just to give my 100 percent every match and I see how important it is just to play such a great level in the whole match, just to have more time then to recover after the match,' Alcaraz told reporters after his 94-minute win. And the Italian showed centre court just what his rival meant by wrapping up the first set in just over halfan-hour. Bublik, ranked 62, managed to get a foothold in the second set as he matched Sinner game for game through the majority of the frame, but never managed to force a break point and really put pressure on the Italian.

Kohli's Bengaluru fulfils IPL dream
Batting great Virat Kohli fulfilled an 18-year dream of winning an IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after they beat Punjab Kings by six runs in yesterday's final in Ahmedabad. Kohli's 43 from 35 balls at the top of the order set up Bengaluru for an imposing total of 190-9 which was one big blow too many for a Punjab side that battled until the end, finishing on 184-7. More than 91,000 fans packed into the 132,000-capacity stadium, a sea of Bengaluru's red and Kohli's jersey number 18 dominating the stands as chants of 'Kohli, Kohli' rang out. They celebrated noisily when Kohli and RCB clinched victory for the first time in the 18 years of the IPL, their three previous finals having all ended in defeat. The 36-year-old Kohli, one of India's all-time greats in all formats of the game, collapsed on the ground after the win and then got up to be hugged by his teammates as the crowd celebrated their hero. 'This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team, it's been 18 long years,' said Kohli. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. 'I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled. 'I have stayed loyal to this team, no matter what. My heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore and this is the team I'll play for till the last day I play the IPL.' Punjab put up a feisty response to the Bengaluru total but faltered in their chase after left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya took 2-17 from his four overs. Australia's Glenn ‘Big Show' Maxwell calls time on ODIs
Explosive Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell called time on his one-day international career yesterday, but will continue in Twenty20 cricket with his eye on next year's World Cup. The 36-yearold, who played 149 ODIs, blasting 3,990 runs, said he was starting to feel the physical toll of the 50- over game. ' I felt like I was letting the team d o w n a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,' said Maxwell, who was nicknamed 'Big Show' for his all-action entertaining style of play. 'I had a good chat with (chair of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. 'We talked about the 2027 (50- over) World Cup and I said to him: 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'. 'I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.' His last game was Australia's Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to India in early March, after which fellow veteran Steve Smith also quit the 50-over format. The mercurial Maxwell's strike rate of 126.70 is the second highest in ODI cricket where he has crunched four hundreds and 23 half-centuries. His rate of scoring is second only to West Indian heavy hitter Andre Russell, and Maxwell has also taken 77 wickets with his off-spin. Perhaps his most memorable innings was at the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai, when he was batting with Australia reeling at 91-7, chasing 293 to win. In a high-pressure situation and battling severe cramp in searing heat, Maxwell took control, slamming 201 from just 128 balls to take his team to victory. He scored 179 of those runs in an unbroken 202 partnership with Pat Cummins, who contributed just 12 after coming at number nine. Australia went on to win the tournament, beating favourites India in the final at Ahmedabad. Maxwell was also part of the Australia team that lifted the 2015 ODI World Cup.
