Kraken 2025 Draft Targets: Porter Martone

Porter Martone / Plenty of signs point towards the Seattle Kraken using the eighth overall selection on a defenseman, but if they are looking to draft the best available, and Porter Martone was there at eight, they could be all over it. Advertisement Listed at 6'3, 207 lbs, Martone is a physically imposing winger with the skill to match. Martone was considered a top-three pick for most of the season, but as the draft inches closer and the teams inside the top 10 are looking to solidify the center ice position, Martone has seen his name occasionally fall, although he's still expected to land inside the top five. Playing in the OHL with the Brampton Steelheads, the 18-year-old scored 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games, forming a formidable duo with Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf. Martone also played on Canada's World Junior team, scoring one goal in three games and for Canada's World Championship team, failing to record a point in the two games he played. The Peterborough, ON native, is known as a power forward, willing to mix it up physically and be a disruptive forward. With the puck, Martone is a playmaker. "While Martone is known as a power forward, it's more accurate to describe him as a playmaker. The patterns of the game seem imprinted in his mind. Constantly scanning the ice and knowing his teammates' tendencies, system's rotations, and the expected movements of defenders, he stays connected with linemates, avoids coverage, and puts himself in advantageous spots to make the next play. He builds deft passing plays, moves ahead of the opposition, and preys on defenders' and goalies' expectations, manipulating them to open up great scoring possibilities," EliteProspects 2025 NHL Draft Guide. Advertisement Martone has been rumoured to add to the long list of CHL players to make the transition to the NCAA, although no formal agreement has been made. If the Kraken elected to draft Martone, he would be a perfect linemate for any of Shane Wright, Matty Beniers or Berkly Catton. His game should translate to the NHL quite easily and should be very successful in the playoffs. Stay updated with the most interesting Kraken stories, analysis, breaking news and more! I talked to a lot of great hockey people and formed many important relationships. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to help me through this exercise. The group that we have brought together is a great mix of hockey people. Kevin has an impressive resume, an intelligent hockey mind, and has helped develop a lot of good defencemen. Brett and I met years ago and have stayed in touch, and I respect his hockey IQ. I have a long history with Scott, and we share a very strong bond. He has been in the organization for a few years and knows exactly how things work and what we need to do to be successful. Not only do I look forward to working with those guys, but I am also excited to continue my coaching partnership with Marko, Jason and the Sedins, who will still to be very involved in the coaching and teaching process." Dean joins the Canucks after three years with the Chicago Blackhawks. During his time as an assistant coach in the NHL, he has helped develop players such as Charlie McAvoy, Alex Vlasic, Torey Krug, and Derek Forbort. Dean was also behind the bench as an assistant for Team USA at the 2025 World Championship, where he helped the Americans win their first Gold Medal since 1933. Advertisement McLean joins the organization after spending the past two years as the Iowa Wild's head coach. Before becoming a coach, the 46-year-old played 385 NHL games, recording 56 goals and 162 points. McLean, who is from British Columbia, also spent time in the Western Hockey League, playing three and a half seasons with the Kelowna Rockets. Young is an internal hire, having been with the organization for the past three seasons. During that time, he served as the Director of Player Personnel. While Young has spent the majority of his career as a Director of Player Personnel, he did spend time behind the bench as an assistant coach at Boston University and was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics.
