Study warns of risks to elephants habituated to human feeding in Sigur plateau

An analysis of 11 pachyderms in the Sigur plateau in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) shows elephants living close to humans are more exposed to dangers from people and human infrastructure. The elephants, all residents of the Sigur plateau, were mostly named after famous Brazilian footballers by conservationist Mark Davidar, who lived in the Sigur till his death in 2013. The findings, titled 'Don't feed the elephant: A critical examination of food-provisioning wild elephants', was published recently in the journal: 'Ecological Solutions and Evidence'. Conservation biologists, Priya Davidar and Jean-Philippe Puyravaud, analysed the lives of 11 elephants that had become habituated to humans through feeding by resort owners in the region. The elephants – Cafu, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Marquez, Socrates, Kaka, Cassius, Benito, and Leonardo – were informally observed by Ms. Davidar and Mr. Puyravaud since 2007, who currently live in the Sigur. They said of the 11 elephants, four have died because of humans – by poisoning, by being set on fire by the owner of an illegal resort, and by other means – while another, Rivaldo, sustained a serious injury, most likely caused by humans. Out of the 11, only seven, including Rivaldo, continue to survive in the region. 'Tour operators favoured provisioning to facilitate viewing elephants close-up. Eleven male elephants provisioned with fruits and sugarcane got habituated to varying degrees. Elephants were fed almost daily by some resorts, usually after 4 p.m. to attract a higher number of tourists. Rates were higher on weekends, when tourism was also higher, though we did not quantify this directly. Four (36%) of these died unnatural deaths attributable directly or indirectly to humans, while one, Rivaldo, was severely injured and survived. The remaining six are still alive. The COVID lockdown in 2020 resulted in a drastic reduction of tourism which limited opportunities for being fed. Of these six, five no longer seek human food to the best of our knowledge as of 2024,' they note. Ms. Davidar told The Hindu that the fates of the 11 elephants in the Sigur highlighted the dangers that elephants face when they become habituated to living close to or being dependent on humans. Apart from the 11 elephants in the Sigur, there have also been other habituated animals in the Nilgiris, including 'Ganesan' in Gudalur, a makhna elephant known for his incredible tolerance towards humans, which died after falling into a sewage pit in 2018. Ms. Davidar said that elephants that live in close proximity to humans face a higher chance of being hurt or even killed as they become a nuisance once they lose their fear of humans. 'Even when they are being chased away from human settlements, they face a higher risk of being killed or injured when trying to traverse human infrastructure,' said Ms. Davidar, who said that the fact that five of the Sigur elephants no longer seek food also shows that elephants can be gradually de-habituated. 'In landscapes where elephants are venturing out from the forests, studies need to be conducted to identify the causes, whether it is the lack of fodder within forests, poor solid waste management attracting elephants, or other factors, so that these issues can be addressed to minimise chances of elephants becoming dependent on human communities for their food,' she added. Ms. Davidar said that the spread of invasive species within forest areas could be limiting food availability for elephants, pushing them towards human settlements in search of food. 'A couple of years ago, there was a mass death of bamboo that the elephants in the region came to depend on. Though the bamboo can be expected to grow back, it will take many years for it the bamboo to become a source of fodder for wild elephants,' she added.
