British sailor arrested in Portugal on suspicion of attempted murder 'after throwing girlfriend who couldn't swim into river'
A British yachtsman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly throwing his non-swimmer partner into a Portuguese river.
The 60-year-old sailor was accused of abandoning the scene as his girlfriend, saved by the crew of another boat who saw her in distress, started to drown.
The drama occurred on the River Tagus off the town of Oeiras in the western part of Lisbon's metropolitan area.
The unnamed Brit was tracked down and arrested and remanded in custody pending an ongoing criminal investigation after being hauled before a judge.
He is continuing to be probed on suspicion of domestic violence and attempted homicide.
The woman, who has been described as a foreigner and is also thought to be British although police haven't released her nationality, was hospitalised after the incident.
Her current condition is not known.
Public prosecutors told local press the couple had started dating around a year ago and had lived together in the yacht owned by the man who has been arrested since December last year.
One told respected Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha the British skipper allegedly 'threw his victim into the river during a row' before abandoning the scene on his yacht 'knowing she couldn't swim.'
Maritime Police intercepted the suspect before he was formally arrested by officers from Portugal's PSP police force.
The arrest is understood to have happened hours after the May 30 incident. The yacht has been seized by investigators.
Portuguese police could not be reached early this morning for a formal comment.
The Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian peninsula.
It rises in the Sierra de Albarracin in eastern Spain, about 90 miles from the Mediterranean coast, and flows westward across Spain and Portugal for 626 miles to empty into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon.

RAPE survivor Hazel Behan fears Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner will 'hunt me down' after his prison release. Brueckner, 47, is due to be freed from a German jail in September after completing his sentence for the rape of a US woman aged 72. 4 4 And Hazel, who has waived her right to anonymity, said: 'His sentence may be ending but mine never did. I have lived with fear every day for 21 years. "Fear that I'll see him. Fear that he'll find out where I live and hunt me down. I also have fear that he'll do to someone else what he did to me. 'I've called him out in a public forum and I have genuine concern he could confront me. "I wouldn't put anything past a person like him. If he is released, I will worry for every woman and child who, like me, believes the justice system is protecting them. "A leopard doesn't change his spots.' Convicted paedophile Brueckner was named as the prime suspect over three-year-old Madeleine's 2007 disappearance in Praia da Luz, Portugal, five years ago. His expected release from his current conviction comes a month before Hazel will discover the outcome of her High Court appeal in Germany against his acquittal last October for raping her, another woman and girl in Portugal in 2004. Although Judge Uta Engemann described the Dublin woman as a 'credible witness' and said 'we have no doubt something bad happened to her', she added there was not enough evidence to convict Brueckner on three counts of rape and two of indecent exposure. Hazel went on: 'I am a survivor of sexual assault and rape — a title I never asked for, but one I have carried with me every day for almost 21 years. "If he is released in September, he can go anywhere he wants. The police can only get involved in protecting me if he comes into my garden. "The system may be ready to let him go, but I'm not. And neither is the wider society that deserves to feel safe.' 'He has drifted across many countries over the years and targeted women and children of all ages. What's to stop him coming to Ireland and coming after me again? 'There have been reports he had plastic surgery and although his appearance is known, he could easily live underground and adapt a new identity and appearance. 'He is part of a world where people know how to stay hidden before they commit horrific levels of violence against women and kids.' Last week, officers travelled to Germany for a search of derelict farms in Praia da Luz he used for camping around the time Madeleine vanished. Two boys and girl arrested after 15-year-old seriously injured
Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in Sunderland. Police were called by the ambulance service to an injured teenage boy on Margaret Terrace in New Herrington at about 6.10pm on Friday, Northumbria Police said. Emergency services attended the scene where the boy, aged 15, had sustained serious injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed article, the force said. He was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening and remains in a stable condition. His next of kin have been informed. Northumbria Police added that the investigation is at an early stage but it is understood the boy had been assaulted within the grounds of Herrington Country Park. Two boys, aged 16, and a girl, aged 15, were arrested in connection with the report on suspicion of assault and have been further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said. They remain in police custody. Chief Superintendent Nicola Walker, of Northumbria Police, said: 'This is a serious incident which saw a young boy assaulted – and we wish him well as he is treated in hospital. 'I would like to reassure our communities that we're carrying out extensive inquiries to understand what happened, with three people in custody being questioned by police. 'Our officers remain in the area to offer reassurance and investigate, which involves some search activity within Herrington Country Park. 'While inquiries remain at an early stage, it is believed some of those involved could be known to each other.' She added: 'We know this is a high footfall area, and it's likely there were lots of people in and around the park at the time of the incident.
