Dolphins secure first Woolf win against woeful Titans

Yahoo05-04-2025

The Dolphins have broken a four-game losing streak to give new coach Kristian Woolf a maiden win of the season in a 36-10 dismantling of a woeful Gold Coast.
The Titans were favourites at home after two victories on the trot, but as so often the case they wilted at Robina where they were expected to win.
Dolphins halves Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa turned in masterclass displays while fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow had his best game of the season.

Man-of-the-match Katoa's running game was phenomenal and he complemented that with astute passing and kicking.
The NRL crackdown on high shots led to both teams losing key forwards in the first half.
Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui was sin-binned in the second minute and put on report for a high shot on Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi.
Dolphins hardman Ray Stone was also marched for a swinging arm that clocked centre Beau Fermor on the jaw in the 31st minute.
It was the Dolphins who played with enterprise on the back of a powerhouse display by new recruit prop Daniel Saifiti.
Winger Jamayne Isaako got the scoreboard ticking with a line break and slick pass to put fullback Tabuai-Fidow over for his first try of the year in the 10th minute.
The Titans' attention to detail was abominable in the first half with Brian Kelly offside from a dropout, winger Tony Francis making a play-the-ball error and second-rower David Fifita giving away a silly penalty at marker.
The visitors punished the errors. Marshall-King sent Saifiti crashing over for his first try to give the Dolphins a 16-0 lead at half-time.
The Dolphins kept their foot on the throat after the break. Nikorima set tireless lock Max Plath up for a try with a pinpoint bomb and then handled twice for back-rower Connelly Lemuelu to score.
The Titans only started to play with any flair when they trailed 28-0 and scored late consolation tries through Phil Sami and AJ Brimson.
Des Hasler will be infuriated by his side's lack of discipline when the game was on the line, while Woolf seems to have found a successful formula for the Dolphins.
The pack was dominant and they injected Tabuai-Fidow with impact.
Winger Isaako had a fantastic night with 20 points from a try and eight from eight with the boot.

Panthers have last laugh over Jarome Luai

Penrith have had the last laugh over Jarome Luai, edging Wests Tigers for an 18-14 win in the four-time premiership hero's first game against his old side. Luai had a mixed reunion with the Panthers, playing a hand in all of the Tigers' three tries but gifting Penrith penalties ahead of two game-defining scores in Sunday's second half at CommBank Stadium. The Tigers' co-captain almost helped his team to victory in the final 10 minutes when Jack Bird regathered his bomb close to the line and offloaded to Jahream Bula. But a miraculous cover tackle from Scott Sorensen and Nathan Cleary stopped the fullback inches short of the line and the Panthers held on. THE TRY SAVER! 🤯#NRLTigersPanthers — NRL (@NRL) June 8, 2025 Marking the Tigers' other ex-Panther in Sunia Turuva, left winger Tom Jenkins scored his first hat-trick in a win that keeps Penrith's mid-season resurgence humming. An away clash against the Warriors is set to prove a litmus test in a fortnight, with Penrith only able to lose four more games this season to finish with a 50 per cent winning record. Three-time reigning wooden spooners the Tigers head into their bye on a four-game losing streak that threatens to undo their improved start to the season. After the teams were locked at 10-10 at halftime, Cleary kicked for goal to put Penrith ahead after Luai tackled Penrith's new five-eighth Blaize Talagi. Jenkins completed his hat-trick, crossing just after Luai was cited for collecting Liam Martin on a kick chase. But Luai had been involved in everything the Tigers did well in a better first half for Benji Marshall's side. He first put boot to ball from his non-preferred right foot ahead of Starford To'a's try before again swinging to the right side as the Tigers shifted for Turuva to score. The 28-year-old was at the centre of another memorable moment early in the second half, flooring opposite man and long-term teammate Cleary in a bone-crunching one-on-one tackle. In his first game back from a hamstring injury, Jeral Skelton gave the Tigers a sniff with 10 minutes to play as Luai and Adam Doueihi found him on the left wing. But for a second consecutive week, the Panthers rediscovered their gritty best to hit their second bye in form.

Milestone Papalii double lifts Raiders over Souths

Josh Papalii scored a fairytale double as he became the most-capped player in Canberra history and lifted the Raiders to a gritty come-from-behind win over South Sydney. Chants of "Papa" rang through GIO Stadium after the Raiders legend's two late tries, before Papalii converted his second himself to put the icing on a 36-12 victory and send the Raiders to the top of the NRL ladder on Sunday. Despite the veteran's late show, it was young five-eighth Ethan Strange who was responsible for turning the day around for the home side, after two early Rabbitohs tries for Keaon Koloamatangi and Alex Johnston threatened to rain on Big Papa's parade. Strange was unstoppable in wet and near-freezing conditions that made handling a tricky task. Just before halftime, the 20-year-old showed why he is one of the best running halves in the league by pushing past four Souths defenders to muscle his way to the tryline and lift the Raiders back into the game. THE MILESTONE MAN! 👏#NRLRaidersSouths — NRL (@NRL) June 8, 2025 Until then, Canberra had looked bereft of ideas in attack, but momentum suddenly swung their way. Strange replicated his effort after the break, jinking past more flat-footed defenders to put the Raiders back level. Soon after, Johnston failed to defuse a Jamal Fogarty bomb and back-rower Zac Hosking cleaned up the scraps to send Canberra ahead. The Raiders grew in confidence and doubled their lead through Simi Sasagi before Papalii, who was given a rare start by coach Ricky Stuart in his 319th game, came on for his second stint. In the 70th minute, the strong crowd of 19,438 that braved the miserable conditions were sent into raptures when hooker Owen Pattie sent Papalii over with a short range pass. Three minutes later the veteran went over after another Pattie pass and stepped up to land the conversion. The Raiders went top with the result, though Canterbury could usurp them when they face Parramatta on Monday. Other than a brief moment in round 2 of 2024, it's the first time Canberra have topped the ladder since round 6 in 2005.

Eagles Defense Shows Difference To True Title Contenders

Eagles Defense Shows Difference To True Title Contenders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been around the NFL for a long time. As a former head coach of the Denver Broncos and defensive coordinator for multiple teams, he has seen changes in the way the game is played, and the way athletes react to certain levels of coaching. Advertisement Sometimes, those changes don't exactly fit with his style. Take his lone season with the Miami Dolphins as an example. Fangio was brought in to assist a very talented defensive room with All-Pro guys at each level. But … Despite some statistical success, his tenure only lasted a single season with many Dolphin players chastising the coach for his "old school" ways of coaching. Things changed drastically once he was hired by the Eagles last offseason. Instead of having veterans blinded by egos, Fangio joined a defense that was only interested in getting better. That is exactly what happened, too. And Philadelphia's players, unlike several stars in Miami, have nothing but great things to say about their coach. Advertisement "Whatever was said in Miami, that's their locker room. Our locker room is completely different," starting safety Reed Blankenship said. "We've got guys that liked to be coached and like to be held accountable and obviously that shows on the field. We're a young group, but we understand if we want to win the big things we've got to be coached hard." Blankenship's comments shouldn't be overlooked. During his time in Miami, Fangio joined a defense with already established stars. His way of coaching and teaching didn't jive with players who did things a certain way to a level of success. In Philly, they have fielded one of the youngest defensive groups in the league over the last two seasons. They needed that hard coaching. And along the way, they caught a level of excellence with Fangio that many of Miami's stars could only dream of.
