Furious US tourist yanks Venice ‘pickpocket' by the ponytail after tracking teen using AirPods ‘Find My Friends' feature

New York Posta day ago
Wild video shows a US tourist yanking a suspected pickpocket by the ponytail after the teenager allegedly stole her purse and passport while on vacation in Venice.
Footage of the dramatic incident, which took place last Thursday, shows the furious woman gripping the teen girl by the hair in front of a crowd of onlookers in the world-famous Italian city.
The mom of eight was able to track down her stolen purse by using the 'Find My Friends' feature on her AirPods, which were inside it, according to her daughter, Karis McElroy, who shared the original video of the confrontation on TikTok.
Karis' mom was on vacation in Venice with her stepdad when they were crowded by a group of girls on a narrow bridge, and soon realized that her backpack had been unzipped and her purse containing her credit cards, cash and passport was missing, along with a metal water bottle.

'Her and my stepdad immediately started tracking her purse through her AirPods on Find My Friends, and they were able to track it down back to those three girls,' Karis said in a subsequent video.
'So she goes and chases them down, and she grabs one of the girls by her ponytail and does not let go. Two of the girls stay, one of the girls runs away with my mom's purse,' she went on.
'She said she didn't care about any of the other stuff in the bag, but she just at least wanted her passport so she could get home,' she said.

The Airbnb host told Karis' mom that the trio were a well-known group of pickpockets in Venice and stood with her while they waited for the cops to apprehend the teenagers.
All the while, the girl being held by the ponytail was screaming, with no effect on Karis' mom.
'I have eight kids, you're not getting to me,' the mom tells the suspected teen pickpocket.
'The police officers came, and they were about to arrest these girls when the girl that had the bag over her shoulder went and swung it and hit my mom, and it hit my mom in the head,' Karis said.

'And in the bag was that metal water bottle that they took from my mom. So my mom had a massive gash on her head, and it was bleeding everywhere. She got a black eye from it, and the girls were arrested. And then my mom had to go to the hospital and get some stitches.'
The third girl got a train to the airport where she was stopped and Karis' mom's passport recovered, along with her credit cards, although she didn't get the cash and AirPods back, Karis said.
Despite her traumatic experience, Karis said her mom had stressed how kind everyone else in Venice had been, with a jewelry store owner next door to her Airbnb even gifting her a necklace.
The couple, from North Carolina, are currently on a Mediterranean cruise after boarding a ship in Venice, Karis said.
The girl who was yanked by the ponytail and subsequently arrested is only 14 years old, and was released on bail just two days later, Italian outlet Il Messaggero reported.

Bam Bam, the allegedly stolen Chicago support dog, is reunited with his owner after more than 2 months

Owner Angel Santiago lost his sight entirely nearly three years ago. He asked for people to be on the lookout for Bam Bam. The internet is celebrating the reunification of Bam Bam, a 14-year-old dachshund mix, and his owner, Angel Santiago. On June 5, Bam Bam, who is an emotional support dog for the legally blind Santiago, was taken from Santiago's backyard in the Chicago neighborhood of Logan Square, per reporting from Fox 32 Chicago. But now, Bam Bam and Santiago are back together again. According to ABC 7 Chicago, Bam Bam was dropped off at a Chicago police station on Aug. 19 by two individuals. The dog, who is microchipped but was not wearing his collar at the time he was taken, appeared healthy and was reunited with Santiago. The police said an investigation into the alleged taking of Bam Bam is still ongoing. The Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation posted on its Facebook page about the reunion, writing that police contacted their organization after a man and woman dropped off the dog at a local precinct, where they were able to trace him to Santiago by scanning his microchip. "Thankfully Bam Bam was microchipped and the information was current," the foundation wrote in its Facebook post, urging pet owners to "please have a vet scan your pup annually when they get their rabies shot to verify your dog is still microchipped and contact the chip company to confirm your information is current." Santiago, who is legally blind due to progressive glaucoma, had let Bam Bam out in the backyard to go to the bathroom when he heard two people enter. Santiago attempted to grab one of the suspects but was unable to hold on to them. Santiago then said he heard Bam Bam barking, but that the sound got softer as the suspects, at least one of whom Santiago believes was a teenager wearing a long-sleeved shirt, fled with the dog. It was unclear to Santiago if the individuals who seemingly took Bam Bam were men or women. Santiago, who also lives with diabetes and became completely blind nearly three years ago, walked up to seven miles a day searching for his beloved dog, with volunteers joining the search. He had also put up posters and stood outside of local grocery store Tony's Fresh Market with Bam Bam's leash and collar in hopes someone would come forward with information about the dog's whereabouts. The internet celebrates Bam Bam's return The internet was devastated to learn of Santiago's story, with many posts calling for Bam Bam's immediate return. Now, people on social media are celebrating, with some calling the story a rare piece of uplifting news. "I'm actually overjoyed," one TikToker wrote in the caption of her video about the development. "We did it," another wrote in her TikTok. "Bam Bam is home!" Solve the daily Crossword

3 Friends Staying in Fla. Vacation Rental Claim Woman Followed Them into Elevator and Accused Them of 'Trespassing' (Exclusive)

The trio recorded the moment they were harassed by a resident of the building who repeatedly called them "pimp" and "whore" in a series of TikTok videos shared on Aug. 18 NEED TO KNOW A group of three friends staying in a Palm Beach, Fla. rental documented the moment they were harassed by another resident who allegedly lived in the building The resident claimed the group was 'trespassing' on her 'private property' when she found them taking photos in the hallway She can be seen following the group and calling them names in a three-part post shared by one of the friends on TikTok A group of friends staying in a vacation rental apartment in Palm Beach, Fla. documented the moment they were harassed by a resident who claimed they were 'trespassing.' Sharing the incident in a three-part TikTok series on Aug. 18, creator Polina, whose username is @polina_sussss21, explained how the whole ordeal began when the woman saw them taking photos in the hallway of the building. Polina, a model, noted in the video that one of her friends had rented a unit in the building so they could take pictures for his clothing brand's Instagram account. The first video shows the woman, who claimed she owned a property in the building, following the group around while pointing her phone camera at them. She can be heard shouting names like 'pimp' and 'whore' at the trio multiple times in the videos. Iris Grey — one of the friends involved in the incident and the person who recorded the videos that Polina shared — tells PEOPLE that while they remained respectful the whole time, the woman would not stop berating them. 'We were shooting a fashion campaign in a Palm Beach Hotel close to Mar-a-Lago for my friend Alexander Roys new collection, with Polina modeling, when a neighbor suddenly decided we were running a pimp and whore operation," says Grey, who also shared the incident to his Instagram account. He continues, "She kept insisting we were trespassing, calling us pimps and Polina a whore. Even though she followed and harassed us, we stayed respectful and kind. Didn't realize shooting a fashion campaign came with its own crime drama, but I think we should turn this negative energy into a positive.' In the TikTok, Polina explains that they eventually went 'downstairs to speak to [the] front desk because [the woman's] behavior was unacceptable." As the group tells the person seated at the front desk what happened, the woman can be heard repeatedly cutting into the conversation. 'What permission do they have but to rent the apartment and live in it, not to trespass on private property with their whoring event,' she says. 'They were outside of my home. My homestead property. I don't know where they're from.' The woman proceeds to call Polina a 'whore' as the group continues their conversation at the front desk. When they note that they were taking photos in a common area of the building, the woman interjects, 'It's common elements that I own, not that they rent. They rent their room, not my common elements.' In the second video that Polina shared, the group attempts to make their way back to their room as the woman follows them into the elevator. While one of the friends tries to block the entryway to the elevator, the woman pushes past him to get inside. She continues to point her camera at the group as she says, 'You're trespassing. Trespassing on my homestead property in Florida,' to which one of the friends responds, 'How are we trespassing? We rented an Airbnb.' (Grey later clarified to PEOPLE that the property was not an Airbnb and that it was a "direct rental from the owner.") The woman then says, 'So what? That gives you a right to your unit and only your unit." They exit the elevator and tell the woman that they're going back to their room, which prompts her to add, 'You get back into your room and I'll let you know your rights while you sit in Florida, whores.' Once the group finally reaches their unit, she tells them to 'stay in your f—ing room," as they close the door. She continues to stand outside with her phone pointed at them. Polina added in the caption, 'She waited outside our room for another 10 minutes.' In a third TikTok, Polina says that the host of the rental contacted her after she shared the incident and offered her a free stay at their place. She also noted that the owner claimed this woman has harassed other people in the past and that she's known to cause issues. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Many users flocked to the comments section of the videos to call out the woman's unruly behavior. 'WTH?! So you rented a unit in a building with common areas, took a few pics, and she's acting like she owns the whole property?? Can't wait until people she knows sees this derogatory rant,' one person commented. Another wrote, 'Why is no one talking about how she followed you to YOUR unit???' Others commended the group for how they handled the incident. 'This was handled so well,' one person added, followed by another who commented, 'My anger issues would've handled things differently than these sweet folks.' WOIO-19 identified the driver as Cleveland Police Officer Gary Eugene Kane II. Ohio Attorney General records indicate that Kane is a 9-year veteran with the Cleveland police. Officers helped Kane out of the car and noticed a glossy appearance in his eyes and smelled a strong odor of alcohol, WOIO-19 reported. A North Olmsted police report notes that Kane refused to take a standard field sobriety test and was arrested on OVI charges. Police marked that Kane refused to submit to a blood test as he repeatedly told officers, 'Take it by hospital,' instead of saying yes or no, according to WOIO-19. Medics responded to the scene to evaluate Kane and later transported him to a hospital. WOIO-19 reported that Kane was cited for failure to control and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The Cleveland Division of Police provided the following statement to our CBS affiliate. "Cleveland Police Deputy Chief Jarod Schlacht confirms Officer Gary Kane was arrested on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, by the North Olmsted Police Department. The incident that led to this arrest occurred outside the city of Cleveland while Kane was off duty. The North Olmsted Police will conduct the investigation.
