US-Iraq collaboration deepens despite "anti-American" sentiment
Despite escalating armed groups' attacks and deep-rooted public opposition, Iraq and the United States are pushing ahead with renewed security and energy collaboration.
According to a report by the Atlantic Council, even without the current conflict between Israel and Iran, the prospects for future US-Iraq relations have often appeared dim. Due in part to the reduced threat from ISIS, and also to public opposition to US military presence under Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), Washington and Baghdad agreed to reduce the role of US forces in combating ISIS and transition to a new security relationship.
The report said that hostilities intensified in Iraq following US backing of Israeli operations in Gaza after October 7, 2023, prompting a wave of anti-American demonstrations and attacks on US-affiliated businesses. These developments, coupled with scaled-back military coordination, narrowed the space for broader cooperation.
Nonetheless, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's April 2024 visit to the US signaled an effort to deepen strategic ties. In Houston, he signed agreements granting American energy companies preferential treatment over Chinese firms, and concluded deals with US defense contractors for equipment and training.

Shafaq News – Cairo Egypt inaugurated a new trade corridor with Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which aims to establish a regional trade route connecting the three countries, according to a report published Tuesday by Al-Masry Al-Youm. The report said that Safaga Port on the Red Sea recently handled the first trial shipment within the project. The initiative is part of a modern multimodal transport system combining maritime shipping and land transport, designed to reshape trade flows between the Arab Mashreq (Arab Levant) and North Africa. Instead of relying on traditional, time-consuming, and costly routes, the new path starts in Cairo, passes through Egypt's national highway network to Safaga Port, continues across the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia's Neom Port, and then moves overland to Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. Maritime sources at Safaga Port told the Egyptian Al-Masry Al-Youm Newspaper that the pilot shipment demonstrated a reduction of more than 50 percent in transport time compared with conventional routes. They added that this gives the new corridor a strong competitive advantage, particularly at a time when some traditional international trade passages face geopolitical challenges.

Oil prices dip on hopes of Russia-Ukraine peace talks
Shafaq News Oil prices slipped in early Asian trade on Tuesday as market participants contemplated planned three-way talks among Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. to end the war in Ukraine, which could lead to an end to sanctions on Russian crude. Brent crude futures fell 7 cents, or 0.11%, to $66.53 a barrel by 0000 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery, set to expire on Wednesday, fell 6 cents, or 0.09%, to $63.36 per barrel. The more active October WTI contract was down 9 cents, or 0.14%, at $62.61 a barrel. Prices settled around 1% higher in the previous session. Following talks with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post he had called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and begun arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy, to be followed by a trilateral summit among the three presidents. "An outcome which would see a ratcheting down of tensions and remove threats of secondary tariffs or sanctions would see oil drift lower toward our $58 per barrel Q4-25/Q1-26 average target," Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy at TD Securities said in a note. Zelenskiy described his direct talks with Trump as "very good" and said they had spoken about Ukraine's need for U.S. security guarantees. Trump has pressed for a quick end to Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, but Kyiv and its allies worry he could seek to force an agreement on Russia's terms. "A result which would see the U.S. apply pressure on Russia in the form of broader secondary tariffs against Russia's oil customers (as those now faced by India) would no doubt move crude to the highs seen a few weeks ago," Melek added.

Iraq Expands Youth Loan Programme under 'Riyada' Initiative

Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani chaired a meeting on Sunday to follow up on the implementation of the government's "Riyada" initiative and the disbursement of youth loans for qualified applicants. Al-Sudani highlighted the initiative's positive reception among young people, describing it as a foundation for a new labour market reality, encouraging private sector growth and small-scale projects with potential to expand. He stressed the need to accelerate loan processing to ensure timely disbursement, supported by funding from the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI). Since its launch, nearly 500,000 individuals aged 18-50 have registered for the programme. Over 90,000 have undertaken training in the past 18 months, with 48,000 completing the process. To date, 12,000 loans have been disbursed, averaging around 1 billion dinars per week. The initiative has also generated approximately 22,000 jobs across various private sector activities.
