Govt to boost VM2026 on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry will utilise social media platforms to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) globally.
Its Deputy Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and Xiaohongshu will be used to market Malaysia as an appealing travel destination.
"The ministry is crafting consistent and effective narratives to make Malaysia appear as a prime travel destination," he said in reply to Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) during the Minister Question Time today.
He added that Malaysia is employing targeted marketing strategies to attract tourists from China, Australia, India, Indonesia, Central Asia, Russia, Middle East, the United Kingdom, Chinese Taipei, Germany and Asean nations.
"We are also increasing traffic of visitors to Malaysia by adding flight routes to main Malaysian cities from international destinations."
He also said the ministry is engaging with online travel agencies to ensure that the travel packages offered remain competitive.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures slipped on Thursday, snapping two straight sessions of gains, weighed by rival edible oils while concerns over rising production and sluggish export demand added further pressure on prices. The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid RM28 ringgit, or 0.65 per cent, to RM4,250 (US$1,000) a metric ton at the midday break. Crude palm oil futures traded lower tracking weakness in the Chicago soybean oil and Dalian palm olein market during Asian hours, said David Ng, a proprietary trader at Kuala Lumpur-based trading firm Iceberg X Sdn Bhd. "The persistent concern over rising output and weak export also added pressure on the market," he said. Cargo surveyors will release their July export estimates later in the day. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.61 per cent, while its palm oil contract lost 0.51 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.82 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. At 0545 GMT, the benchmark Brent crude was down 0.33 per cent at US$73 per barrel. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.35 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Malaysian palm oil exports to the United States during January-May rose 51.8 per cent from a year earlier to 93,000 metric tons, the Plantation and Commodities Ministry said.

Anwar said that key areas of focus include the reform of international financial institutions, fairer trade, climate justice, technology transfer, and capacity building. He added that Malaysia would maintain strong relations with all countries, remaining committed and active in spearheading various initiatives at the Asean level. The nation's active involvement with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec), BRICS, and countries in the Global South would also be strengthened, reflecting Malaysia's determination to advocate for a more just world order. "We do not want to be mere local champions, excelling on our own turf but insignificant on the global stage," he said. "We must collectively restore Malaysia's image as a prosperous nation, rich in cultural uniqueness and firmly rooted in its local values and history." The Prime Minister also announced that Malaysia would leverage the opportunity of hosting the Sea Games in 2027 and several other international tournaments over the next five years. "The opportunity to host such prestigious sports events will be an important platform to foster unity among the people," he said.

TikTok launches crowd-sourced debunking tool in US

WASHINGTON: TikTok on Wednesday rolled out a crowd-sourced debunking system in the United States, becoming the latest tech platform to adopt a community-driven approach to combatting online misinformation. Footnotes, a feature that the popular video-sharing app began testing in April, allows vetted users to suggest written context for content that might be wrong or misleading – similar to Community Notes on Meta and X. "Footnotes draws on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing people to add relevant information to content," Adam Presser, the platform's head of operations and trust and safety, said in a blog post. "Starting today, US users in the Footnotes pilot program can start to write and rate footnotes on short videos, and our US community will begin to see the ones rated as helpful – and rate them, too," he added. TikTok said nearly 80,000 US-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors. The video-sharing app has some 170 million US users. TikTok said the feature will augment the platform's existing integrity measures such as labelling content that cannot be verified and partnering with fact-checking organisations, such as AFP, to assess the accuracy of posts on the platform. The crowd-sourced verification system was popularised by Elon Musk's platform X, but researchers have repeatedly questioned its effectiveness in combatting falsehoods. Earlier this month, a study found more than 90 per cent of X's Community Notes are never published, highlighting major limits in efficacy. The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) study analysed the entire public dataset of 1.76 million notes published by X between January 2021 and March 2025. TikTok cautioned it may take some time for a footnote to become public, as contributors get started and become more familiar with the feature. "The more footnotes get written and rated on different topics, the smarter and more effective the system becomes," Presser said. Tech platforms increasingly view the community-driven model as an alternative to professional fact-checking. Earlier this year, Meta ended its third-party fact-checking programme in the United States, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg saying it had led to "too much censorship." The decision was widely seen as an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, whose conservative base has long complained that fact-checking on tech platforms serves to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content. Professional fact-checkers vehemently reject the claim. As an alternative, Zuckerberg said Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram, would use "Community Notes." Studies have shown Community Notes can work to dispel some falsehoods, like vaccine misinformation, but researchers have long cautioned that it works best for topics where there is broad consensus.
