2 won't actually be titled GTA Online 2
Several insiders think Rockstar won't do a
"2"
at all. Rather, the online mode might simply be named
"Grand Theft Auto,"
hinting at a new start, and a move away from the original's legacy constraints.
2. A standalone release is in play
Similar to how GTA Online ultimately diverged from GTA V, rumors indicate the next version might be released as a free, stand-alone title, making it even more accessible and widespread, particularly for those that simply want the online universe.
3. It might be free-to-play
The free-to-play business model has taken over in multiplayer gaming, and Rockstar can easily join in. This would enable GTA Online to compete more squarely with
Fortnite
and
Call of Duty: Warzone
, depending on in-game buying rather than initial sales.
4. Crossplay might finally happen
Cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation has long been the most highly requested feature. Leaks emphatically indicate GTA Online will be crossplay-enabled at launch, tearing down console community barriers.
