Youngsters earn maiden ODI call-ups in Proteas squad for tri-series against India and Sri Lanka

Cricket South Africa has announced the squad for the Proteas Women's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, where they will compete in an ODI tri-series against hosts Sri Lanka and India.
Three players have received their maiden call-ups to the national side, with Karabo Meso and Seshnie Naidu, who featured in the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup earlier this year, included in the tri-series squad. All-rounder Miané Smit, who was a travelling reserve at last year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup, also makes the cut.

Alongside the youngsters, Nondumiso Shangase makes her return to the national side for the first time since the Proteas Women's tour to India in June last year.
These four players come in as replacements for seamer Ayanda Hlubi, wicketkeeper Mieke de Ridder and opening batter Lara Goodall. Meanwhile, Marizanne Kapp will miss the series as she continues her conditioning block in preparation for the upcoming tours and the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India.
South Africa squad: Laura Wolvaardt (Captain), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Sinalo Jafta, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Suné Luus, Karabo Meso, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Seshnie Naidu, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, and Chloé Tryon.

Speaking on the squad selected, Proteas Women head coach Mandla Mashimbyi said: 'It's a very good squad. The mixture of youth and experience helps. It's an opportunity for these girls to show what they can do. Hopefully, whatever we've covered at the camp can be applied in Sri Lanka when we take the field.
'For me, it's not an opportunity for Karabo, Miané and Seshnie anymore. It's an opportunity for us to give them exposure at this level. Going forward and for the bigger picture, it's important that we expose them as much as possible to international cricket."
The tri-series will begin on April 27 and will be played entirely at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. News Women's News South Africa Women

Team Abu Dhabi cap brilliant cricket season with D10 title

Team Abu Dhabi capped a remarkable domestic season by winning the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) D10 competition. Abu Dhabi defeated Sharjah by seven wickets in the final after restricting their opponents to 87-5 in their 10 overs. The capital side chased down the target inside seven overs, with captain Rohan Mustafa top-scoring with 36. Mustafa continued his brilliant form in the tournament which included a record-breaking 13-ball half-century. He was named the player of the final and the tournament. Left-arm spinner Haider Ali had earlier left his mark on the tournament with an astonishing spell of five wickets for no runs in two overs during the semi-final against Fujairah. Team Abu Dhabi's D10 winning line-up featured two graduates of Zayed Cricket Academy, Ethan D'Souza and Vishal Saravanan. Victory capped what is being hailed as the most successful season at the Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub (ADCSH) and for its renowned Zayed Cricket Academy (ZCA). The 2024/25 campaign saw other major achievements across with Team Abu Dhabi also emerging champions in the ECB D50 tournament and reaching the semi-finals of the ECB D20. Zayed Cricket Academy U19 side were declared champions of the ECB National League while the U16s were runners-up in the National League. 'This D10 title is a huge validation of our model,' said Matt Boucher, CEO of ADCSH. 'These are not just success stories for board meetings and presentations – they are real, on-the-field wins. Team Abu Dhabi's achievements are proof that long-term investment in player development through Zayed Cricket Academy is delivering tangible results. Our coaching staff, especially those working behind the scenes, deserve huge credit for turning potential into podiums. 'Special acknowledgment and our thanks goes to Ruan Bohalmann from Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, whose exceptional team management skills were instrumental in guiding Team Abu Dhabi through the D10 campaign with focus and unity.' Bohlmann added: 'This season reflects the spirit of sport that we continue to build in Abu Dhabi – grassroots development feeding elite performance. 'The success of Team Abu Dhabi and Zayed Cricket Academy is something the whole emirate can be proud of. As the region cements its status as a sporting powerhouse, this record-setting season confirms that Abu Dhabi is not just hosting top-tier cricket – we are building it, nurturing it, and winning with it. 'This title wasn't won by individuals – it was earned through true teamwork. Every player gave 100 per cent in all departments – batting, bowling, and fielding. It's the collective effort, determination, and commitment of the Team Abu Dhabi squad that made this possible. 'I hope this experience also gave ZCA youngsters Ethan D'Souza and Vishal Saravanan valuable insight into what to expect and what's expected as they progress in their cricketing journeys.' Team Abu Dhabi had earlier celebrated winning the D50 title in April. The Abu Dhabi side defeated Fujairah in the 50-over competition final in Ajman. There, Fujairah were bowled out for 214 before Team Abu Dhabi chasing down the target in 36 overs with five wickets in hand. Captain and UAE cricket veteran Mustafa top-scored for the winners there as well, hitting 45 from just 28 balls. Team Abu Dhabi had also won the D20 title in 2023.

Brook relishing ‘fun' start as England captain after Windies clean sweep

Harry Brook said he was having a 'hell of a lot of fun' as England captain after his first series in permanent charge of the white-ball sides ended in a 3-0 clean sweep of the West Indies. England recorded their first one-day international series whitewash in three years — when they beat the Netherlands by the same scoreline — following a dominant seven-wicket success at the Oval on Tuesday. Brook's men made light of a revised target of 246 after rain reduced the match to 40 overs per side. Jamie Smith, promoted to open this series, launched the run chase with a dynamic 64 off 28 balls as he posted a maiden ODI fifty in front of his Surrey home crowd. Jos Buttler, Brook's predecessor as limited-overs captain, finished the job with 41 not out as England cruised home with more than 10 overs to spare. Yet England came into this series on a seven-match losing streak in ODI cricket, including a woeful Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan earlier this year that prompted Buttler's resignation as skipper. 'It's a hell of a lot of fun when you're enjoying it with a lot of mates,' said Brook, whose attention now turns to a three-match T20 series with the West Indies starting at Chester-le-Street on Friday. 'I think we've got such a good side. The depth in batting is amazing and then we've got a lot of skilful bowlers as well.' England were back to their best in the field at the Oval after letting their standards slip at Cardiff on Sunday following a 238-run rout of the West Indies in last week's series opener at Edgbaston. That England managed a three-wicket win in Wales that put them an unassailable 2-0 up was largely down to star batsman Joe Root's ODI best 166 not out. 'I don't feel like we really deserved that win,' said Brook of Sunday's success at Sophia Gardens. 'Our fielding was a little bit sloppy. But because we are so tight as a group, we've managed to scrape a victory there. Obviously, having Joe Root in your side is always a big help.' Smith, who replaced Phil Salt as opener, averaged 17.63 after his first dozen ODI innings. But on Tuesday the batting skill that has helped make him a Test regular was evident. 'He's gone out there and and played extremely well, but he's not a slogger,' Brook said. 'He's playing proper shots, he's putting their bad balls away and he's putting them (the West Indies) under immense pressure.' The West Indies recovered from 28-3 and 154-7 to finish on 251-9 after arriving late to the Oval because of heavy London traffic . Adil Rashid was the pick of England's attack, with the veteran leg-spinner taking 3-40. 'Rash has got so much skill,' said Brook of his Yorkshire team-mate. 'He's a very wily bowler. He's he's been around the block for a while, and he keeps on getting better and better.' Attention now switches to T20s, with three games against West Indies starting in Durham on Friday and a World Cup in February. Agence France-Presse

Explained: How RCB's IPL victory parade in Bengaluru turned into a regrettable tragedy

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebrations after their first IPL win soon turned sour after a stampede at their victory parade left 11 dead and 47 fans injured. Joyous cricket fans had come out to celebrate and welcome home their heroes after RCB beat Punjab Kings in a roller-coaster Indian Premier League cricket final on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. But the euphoria of the vast crowds in the southern tech city of Bengaluru ended in disaster, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it "absolutely heartrending". Karnataka state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, "The pain of this tragedy has even erased the joy of victory.' How celebration turned into stampede Thousands of people, some waving the home team's red flag, lined streets around M Chinnaswamy Stadium as the team arrived in a bus in the evening, TV channels showed, with some climbing trees and the stadium wall for a better view. #WATCH | Bengaluru, Karnataka | A large number of #RoyalChallengersBengaluru fans have turned up to catch a glimpse of their champion team at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. A special felicitation ceremony for all RCB players has been organised by the Karnataka State Cricketâ¦ — ANI (@ANI) June 4, 2025 The stampede took place when thousands of fans attempted to enter the stadium in a hurry from various gates. As the celebration proceeded, some people outside without passes tried to push through gates and there was further trouble between the perimeter and main arena, police said. Police started caning people at one gate, leading to more chaos, said Mithun Singh, a software engineer among the crowd, reported Reuters. "I was standing near the entrance, there was a huge crowd and they stamped on me", one lady told AFP, being taken in a wheelchair, who did not give her name. "I was not able to breathe. I fell unconscious." One policeman carried an injured spectator to an ambulance, while people gathered around another lying seemingly unconscious on the ground. Crowd too huge to control Siddaramaiah told reporters said that "no one expected such a huge crowd." But he added that the entire police force of the city had been deployed. "The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came," the minister said. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said hundreds of thousands of people had flocked onto the streets and that police had been "finding it very difficult." #WATCH | A car was damaged after fans climbed over it outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru A large number of #RoyalChallengersBengaluru fans have turned up here to catch a glimpse of their champion team. Who were the victims? According to NDTV, all the victims are under 40, with a 13-year-old being the youngest. Three teenagers and six people in the 20-30 years age group are among the ones who died. Most of them had come with their friends to cheer for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Some had even travelled from other districts to join the celebration. The Karnataka CM has announce Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the families of the deceased. Who is accountable? The RCB team had given away free passes for the event through its website but also warned that numbers would be limited. The team's social media account, as well as Virat Kohli's wife, actress Anushka Sharma, had shared videos of cheering crowds as the bus full of the players waved back. ð¨ RCB Victory Parade: Today at 5 pm IST. â¼ï¸ Victory Parade will be followed by celebrations at the Chinnaswamy stadium. "At the time of the celebrations inside the stadium officials there did not know what had happened... I would like to send my heartfelt condolences," Dhumal said. Shivakumar said cricket organisers had "shortened the programme". The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has expressed his condolences over the loss of lives during a stampede near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team felicitation event at the venue following their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. "BCCI feels sad and prays for the families of the deceased and our condolences are with them. What happened in Bengaluru is unfortunate; every life is precious. This is an RCB event. BCCI was not related with it in any manner as we are only accountable till the closing ceremony. We conducted it so well, handling more than one lakh people at the Narendra Modi Stadium," he told ANI. T20 victory parade in Mumbai was well-organised Saikia also added that while the victory parade of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team was held last year, "none of such news came as we planned all things and were in talks with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and with the authorities". "Proper security was arranged at that time," he said. Kohli feels 'gutted' Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opener and right-hand batter Virat Kohli went from celebrating his win to mourning the tragedy. "At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted," Kohli wrote on Instagram, followed by a broken heart emoji. The franchise issued a statement and offered its condolences to the families of the victims who died in the tragedy. "RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our programme, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe," the franchise added. Other stampedes in India There have been deadly crowd incidents previously at Indian mass events such as religious festivals due to poor crowd management and safety lapses. A stampede at India's Kumbh Mela religious fair in January this year killed 30 people and injured several others. In July last year, 121 people were killed in northern Uttar Pradesh state during a Hindu religious gathering.
