La Liga snubs Real Madrid's Club World Cup excuse, opener against Osasuna stays

Malay Mail01-08-2025
MADRID, Aug 1 — Real Madrid will begin their La Liga campaign with a home game against Osasuna as scheduled after Spain's federation (RFEF) rejected their appeal to postpone the August 19 fixture on Thursday, local media reported.
Real had requested a longer rest period and pre-season after playing in the Club World Cup in the US, where they lost to Paris St Germain in the semi-finals on July 9, according to the report.
Reuters has contacted the RFEF and Real for comment.
An RFEF judge ruled that in order to preserve the integrity of the competition only a case of force majeure would warrant a change to the official calendar, and that Real's case did not justify an alteration, Europa Press news agency reported.
'Finally, it should be added that although the requesting club claims to have the agreement of the opposing party, CA Osasuna, there is no record of this entity having responded to the request made by this judge,' the sole judge was quoted as saying in his ruling by the Europa Press. — Reuters

Rodri will not make Manchester City return till September

MANCHESTER City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September's international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defence of their Premier League crown. The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City's defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month. 'Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks,' Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday. 'He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit. 'Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured. 'We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good.' The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week. City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals. - AFP

Soccer-Spain's Coll lost her bottle, notes in Euro 2025 final shootout

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Final - England v Spain - St. Jakob-Park, Basel, Switzerland - July 27, 2025 England's Chloe Kelly scores the winning penalty past Spain's Catalina Coll in the penalty shootout REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth/File Photo (Reuters) -Spain keeper Cata Coll was left without her tactical notes during the penalty shootout in last month's European Championship final, because England keeper Hannah Hampton had thrown the bottle they were written on into the stands. Hampton replaced Coll's bottle with her own as the 24-year-old Chelsea keeper led England to their second continental title in a row, beating the world champions 3-1 in the shootout after a 1-1 draw in Basel. "It wasn't hard. When she's in the goal it's on its own... you just pick it up," Hampton told TalkSport. "I just put mine in there, chucked her one into the fans and she had an empty bottle. She was looking for where it is. She was walking back and I was walking the other way. She was so confused. I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing." Australia keeper Andrew Redmayne did the same to Peruvian counterpart Pedro Gallese during a qualifying playoff for the 2022 World Cup. Redmayne saved the final penalty as Australia won the shootout 5-4. Coll saved Beth Mead's re-taken penalty as Spain took the lead, before Hampton saved two spot-kicks and Spaniard Salma Paralluelo shot wide. Hampton said she wrote down her notes on her arm to keep them safe. "I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that," she added.
