Real Madrid coach Ancelotti to go on trial for alleged tax fraud
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will go on trial next week for allegedly failing to declare income to Spain's tax office.
Prosecutors are seeking a jail term of four years and nine months for the 65-year-old Italian, accusing him of costing Spain's treasury more than $1.1m in undeclared earnings from image rights in 2014 and 2015.
The trial will begin on Wednesday and is expected to last two days, a spokesman for the court said on Friday.
Ancelotti, who as a coach has won a record five Champions League trophies including three with Real Madrid, must be present for the hearings, the spokesman added.
Prosecutors accuse him of only declaring in his tax returns the personal remuneration received from Real Madrid during those two years even though he declared himself to be a tax resident in Spain and indicated his home was in Madrid.
They accuse Ancelotti of allegedly setting up a 'confusing' and 'complex' system of shell companies to hide his extra earnings from his image rights as well as from other sources such as real estate.
Ancelotti earned $1.33m in 2014 from the sale of his image rights and $3.19m in 2015, according to prosecutors.
A Spanish court in 2023 ordered Ancelotti to stand trial over the affair but did not set a date.
Ancelotti dismissed the affair last year as 'an old story that I hope will be resolved soon' when he was asked about the case.
He took over at Real Madrid in 2013, leaving in May 2015, before being appointed by Bayern Munich the following year.
The former Italy international midfielder, who as a player won the European Cup twice with AC Milan, later managed Napoli and Everton before returning to Real Madrid in 2021.
Aside from his success in the Champions League, he has won domestic league titles with Madrid and Milan, in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.
Spain has cracked down in recent years on top football players who have not paid their dues.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were both found guilty of tax evasion and received prison sentences that were waived for being first-time offenders.
Former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho received a one-year suspended sentence after reaching a guilty plea for tax fraud in 2019.
Colombian superstar artist Shakira in 2023 agreed to receive a three-year suspended sentence and pay $7.86m in fines to settle a tax fraud case and avoid trial.
Prosecutors had accused the 'Hips Don't Lie' singer of defrauding the Spanish state of 14.5 million euros ($15.6m) on income earned between 2012 and 2014, charges Shakira denied, saying she only moved to Spain full-time in 2015.

'Al Hilal will face Real Madrid in its first match in the tournament, which will be held on Wednesday, June 18, in Miami, USA.' Inzaghi left his job at the San Siro on Tuesday following Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final defeat by Paris St Germain in Munich. He had taken over Inter, who relinquished their Serie A title to Napoli on May 23, in July 2021 and won six trophies during his time at the helm.

Liverpool turn down Barca's approach for winger Diaz: Report

The Colombia international has been a target for the La Liga champions for some time, although he has also been attracting interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. Only last month Barça's sporting director Deco publicly named Diaz, and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, when talking about their transfer plans. However, the PA news agency understands when the Catalan club made an approach to Liverpool on Wednesday they were told they had no intention of selling. Diaz turned 28 in January and has two years remaining on his current deal but it is believed there are currently no plans to open negotiations on any extension. However, with Darwin Nunez expected to depart this summer and the future of Federico Chiesa in doubt after a frustrating debut season in which he made just 14 appearances, Arne Slot's Premier League-winning forward line already looks like losing two of its members. The arrival of Florian Wirtz, with discussions ongoing with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer fee after a recent £109 million ($148.3 million) bid was rejected, will likely offset the impact of that - especially as Nunez and Chiesa contributed just nine goals between them. But it is understood potentially losing a third member of the attack would only be sanctioned if there was a bid which allows Liverpool to significantly improve the team or if the player agitated for a move. Last month Diaz told American-Spanish television channel Telemundo: 'For me, I'd stay however many years it takes.' Liverpool have already recruited Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen to strengthen their right side following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and are looking to bolster the left with a move for Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.

Fabregas believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid Inter links
PA Media/dpa London Cesc Fabregas appeared to commit his future to Como amidst reports linking him with Inter Milan, stating he believes in the 'long-term project' at last season's Serie A newcomers. The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris Saint Germain. 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer.
