'Hunger never seen before' grips Gaza, UNRWA warns
GENEVA (Bernama-Anadolu): Hunger in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) warned on Thursday, describing the situation as "hunger never seen before.", Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
"Gaza has become a land of desperation," the UNRWA said on X, as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen under the ongoing siege and hostilities.
The agency called for immediate action, urging all parties to lift the blockade, allow the unrestricted flow of humanitarian supplies, and resume the ceasefire. It also reiterated demands for the release of hostages.
"Hunger in Gaza is spreading and deepening, deliberate and man-made," it stated.
The conflict has devastated essential services and supply lines, leaving hundreds of thousands at risk of famine as humanitarian aid to the enclave is on pause by Israel since March 2.
The Israeli army has launched a brutal military onslaught on Gaza, killing more than 52,600 people, mostly women and children, since Oct 7, 2023.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. -- Bernama-Anadolu

Russia says its forces hit port infrastructure in Ukraine, captured more settlements

Pope Leo to visit Lebanon, cardinal says, in likely first trip abroad

The pope will travel to Lebanon "by December", Cardinal Bechara Rai told the al-Arabiya television channel. Rai, leader of the 3.5-million-member Maronite Catholic Church, did not give a specific date for the visit but said "preparations are already underway". A Lebanese official familiar with the matter confirmed that discussions were being held about a visit towards the end of the year, though a date had not yet been finalised. Leo, the first U.S. pope, was elected by the world's Catholic cardinals on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, who had planned to visit Lebanon but was unable to go because of health issues. Lebanon is home to more than two million Catholics, according to Vatican statistics. A Vatican spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Rai's remarks. A Vatican official, who asked not to be named, confirmed that a trip was being planned and said it could be part of a tour that would also include Turkey. Travelling abroad has become a major part of the modern papacy, with popes seeking to meet local Catholics, spread the faith, and conduct international diplomacy. They often draw crowds in the millions. Francis made 47 visits abroad during his 12-year papacy, travelling to 68 countries. He made a policy of visiting countries that often did not draw international attention as a way of highlighting problems in what he called the "peripheries" of the world. Leo has been expected to visit Turkey in late November as part of celebrations for the 1,700th anniversary of a major early Church council, which took place in Nicaea, now called Iznik. In a message to Lebanon earlier this month, Leo commemorated the fifth anniversary of a huge chemical explosion at the Beirut port that killed 200 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage. New Early Childhood Education Act On The Way
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- A new act on early childhood education will be introduced to ensure comprehensive and effective regulation, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. She said it is among the education reform strategies outlined under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) aimed at strengthening governance in the country's education system. 'Governance at all levels of learning from preschool, primary, secondary and up to pre-university will be strengthened to enhance the effectiveness of service delivery more comprehensively,' she said during her winding-up speech on the 13MP for the Ministry of Education (MOE) in the Dewan Rakyat today. She added that MOE will also introduce the 2026 Preschool Curriculum, based on the 2027 School Curriculum Framework, emphasising character building, self-confidence, love, and resilience through age-appropriate experiential learning. 'In line with this, the national preschool curriculum will be made mandatory for all early childhood education institutions, with emphasis on human dignity values, character formation, critical thinking and life skills,' she said. 'To achieve this, enforcement of the Education Act 1996 will be strengthened,' she said. Meanwhile, Fadhlina said MOE remains committed to maintaining the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) as an internationally recognised pre-university qualification. 'With about 50,000 to 55,000 enrolments annually, various measures are being and will continue to be implemented to attract SPM graduates, particularly through the Form Six Education Roadmap 2024-2030,' she said. The roadmap focuses on five key areas - image branding, infrastructure enhancement, administrative improvements, more flexible teaching and learning, and a curriculum benchmarked against international standards such as A-Levels.
