Ronaldo's ex-team-mate pulls no punches with what he's really like - 'Crazy'

Daily Mirror7 hours ago
Cristiano Ronaldo is considered by many to be the best footballer of all time, and one former team-mate has accredited his success to one particular habit he couldn't ignore
Former Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi has laid bare the tireless work ethic that's made Cristiano Ronaldo arguably the best of all time. Matuidi, 38, spent two seasons playing alongside Ronaldo in Turin, where he got a first-hand look at the processes that have shaped the five-time Ballon d'Or -winner.
Ronaldo has won just about every major trophy available to him over the course of his 23 years in professional football to date. And the 40-year-old, currently plying his trade for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, continues to operate at elite levels even far beyond the average retirement age.

It was Ronaldo wearing the captain's armband as Portugal beat Spain to lift the UEFA Nations League title for the second time in June. Many thought the veteran was heading to Saudi Arabia for an easy retirement in 2023, but he has also clinched the division's Golden Boot in the last two campaigns.

These things don't happen by chance, however, and Matuidi has seen the work behind the scenes that maketh the man. Even if that means getting a quick workout in in the wee hours when most of his peers are sleeping.
"Cristiano was an incredible professional, obsessed with work," said the World Cup -winner in an interview with Italian daily Tuttosport. "One night we returned to Continassa at 2am after a league match to retrieve our cars.
"We were exhausted, but he still persuaded [former Juventus defender Mehdi] Benatia to accompany him to the gym for some recovery work. I thought he was crazy [laughs]. Ronaldo was like that, he never stopped. That's the secret of his success and why he still manages to make a difference today."

It perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise that one as successful as Ronaldo is of the opinion sleep is for the weak. After all, one doesn't get a physique like his at 40 years of age without putting in the work at times when others would rather rest.
Ronaldo and Matuidi won two Serie A titles during their time together with the Bianconeri. Ronaldo was named Serie A Footballer of the Year in both 2019 and 2020, averaging around 34 goals per season across his three campaigns in Italy.

The consummate professional isn't accustomed to letting his own standards slip, nor those around him. Ronaldo's tale is far from finished, too, after penning a fresh two-year deal with Al-Nassr in June.
And former France anchor Matuidi isn't the first team-mate to be blown away by the high standards Ronaldo insists on driving off the field. Former Manchester United colleague Patrice Evra was also taken aback to see the lengths 'CR7' will go to in order to ensure he remains ahead of the competition.
"I would give advice to anybody, when Cristiano invites you for lunch at his house, just say no," he said on the ITV World Cup podcast. "He once said, 'Patrice, come over after training.' I went, you know I was really tired, [and] at the table there was only salad and plain white chicken so I was like, okay, and water, not any juice.

"We started eating and I was thinking some big meat would be coming after that but there was nothing. He just finished and he stood up and he started playing with a ball, doing some skills and he said, 'Let's do some two-touch.' I was like, can I just finish eating?
"He said 'No, no let's play two-touch.' We start playing two touch. After that he said let's go to the pool to swim, I was like okay… after going in the jacuzzi, the sauna, I'm done. I say, 'Cristiano, why have we come here? Have we come here because we have a game tomorrow, or just for lunch?'"
It gives some insight as to what one can expect to undertake if they want to reach the top of the game. Unsurprisingly, not everyone is cut out to go to those lengths.

Scotland World Cup hopes and Euro ambitions on agenda for Hibs striker Bowie

A disrupted summer was definitely a price worth paying for the honour that interrupted Kieron Bowie's holiday plans. If anything, the experience has simply made him more eager to take on extra work – for Hibs AND Scotland, all going well. Awarded his first senior international cap by Steve Clarke during the June international window, the former Fulham prospect coming off the bench for the final dozen minutes or so of a one-sided away win over lowly Liechtenstein, Bowie is definitely eager to prove that his pedigree with Scot Gemmill's Under-21s can be translated into World Cup goals for the 'big' team. Have inherited the No. 9 jersey at club level for the start of his second season in green-and-white, the physically imposing centre forward harbours realistic ambitions to play the same role for his country one day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Looking forward to European opportunities after helping David Gray's team to a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership, despite requiring surgery on a hamstring injury that hampered his ability to contribute, Bowie should be leading the line for Hibs when they take on FC Midtjylland in their Europa League second qualifying round tie later this month. He's eager to get started, despite a distinct lack of time off. 'It's mad because us lads that were away (on international duty), we've only been in for just over a week, and then we've got Midtjylland in less than two weeks' time so it's a very quick turnaround,' he said, adding: 'But we feel in a good place and just need to get back to our fittest and get playing well. 'I think in terms of time off I had around three weeks, maybe four weeks-ish, so it's not long. It's obviously alright, but it's not long at all. 'I had two weeks off after the Rangers game and then we were away for eight or nine days. Then I had another week-and-a-half, two weeks off after that, which is good from the club to let us have that extra break when the other lads are in a week earlier than us. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It's good to have that time off, but you can't really switch off when you've got two toddlers at home. I should have just came and hid in here! 'I feel like at the end of the season I was just getting into the gear that I'm in and I feel like now I just need to do as much as I can and just play the best I can play.' Eagerly anticipating an increased workload in the campaign ahead, Bowie pointed out: 'I've played in England before obviously, and that's Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. It's relentless down there, so I've been used to it previously, but then obviously with my injury and stuff, it's sort of taking a toll on my body. But I'm hoping just to try and get back to fit as I can and be able to adapt to being able to play Thursday, Sunday. 'I mean, obviously I want to do as much as I can in the league. But then also now to play in Europe is a big thing for us as a club and hopefully I can do well in that as well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I need to do as much as I can now, because during the season you don't get the opportunity to do as much running as you can do now. You just got to do as much as you can to put yourself in stead for the season. 'I'm definitely a lot closer to my best now, especially with a pre-season. I've helped myself a lot during off-season, and hopefully I can look to more goals this season.' International 'honour' sparks desire for more caps More goals would be grand, of course. Not just from a Hibs perspective. With Scotland heading into a World Cup qualification campaign, Clarke is in a position that will have been familiar to many a predecessor – namely, crying out for an international-class centre forward. Bowie, who says he'll get the jersey from his Scotland debut framed, insisted: 'I mean, to play for Scotland, it's just an honour. And then hopefully in the future I can get more call-ups, and we'll see what happens. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'No, unfortunately my family didn't travel out to see me. They just watched it on the TV. It's a long way to go, just to go to Liechtenstein and then not even sure if I'm going to play! 'I just sort of take it on my stride. I don't really overthink things too much, I just sort of take it day by day and see what happens.'

And his debut season ended with victory in the Asian Champions League, with Toney also bagging 30 goals in all competitions. But the forward's summer turned sour when he returned to London this week. Posting a picture on Instagram Stories, Toney revealed that his car had been broken into by thieves. The hitman showed that the vehicle's glass windows had been smashed in. It's not known if the thieves managed to steal anything from the car. But Toney expressed his displeasure with a caption that read: 'This is why I hate London.' The ex-Peterborough ace could find himself back in London in September if he retains his place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad. Toney was recalled for June's matches against Andorra and Senegal. But he failed to come off the bench in the 1-0 win over Andorra. 'That's what he can give' - Stroppy Tuchel suggests Ivan Toney will NOT get more playing time due to 'specialist' role While Toney managed just several minutes in the shock 3-1 defeat to Senegal. England's next match sees them take on Andorra again, this time at Wembley. September also has England playing Serbia, with games against Wales and Latvia to come in October.

England match-winner Shoaib Bashir praised after injury rules him out of series

Bashir broke the little finger on his left hand while attempting a caught-and-bowled on day three of the third Rothesay Test and has already been booked in for surgery in the coming days. But he showed serious fortitude to bat against the 90mph pace of Jasprit Bumrah on Sunday evening and played a brief but decisive role with the ball in an impossibly tense fifth-day finish. Test Cricket. Wow. 😍 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 14, 2025 With India creeping towards the finish line on 170 for nine chasing 193 in the final session, he bowled last man Mohammed Siraj via a back-spinning ricochet off the face of the bat. Having spent the majority of the last two days watching the game unfold with England's coaching staff, it was a remarkable way for a captivating contest to conclude, securing a 22-run win and a 2-1 lead for the hosts. 'It was great that Bash was able to get that last wicket with everything he had to deal with this week,' said Stokes, who must find a new spinner for the last two Tests. Same day. Six years apart. Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer delivered for England once again at Lord's 👏#WTC27 #ENGvIND — ICC (@ICC) July 14, 2025 'He's 21 years old and he's got a very badly broken finger. To go out there and bat for us and to be willing to sit there on the bench, waiting for his moment to come on and bowl, I think just proves how much it means to everyone who gets the opportunity to put the shirt on. 'Not even a couple of breaks is going stop anyone getting out there. To finish that game off was written in the stars. It's not good news for Bash, it's very disappointing for us as a team and for him, but I think the courage that he showed (was outstanding). 'There would be a lot of people who might not have been brave enough to go out there and face Bumrah, then also put themselves up for wanting to get out there and bowl, and help his team.' England's win came on the sixth anniversary of their 2019 World Cup final win at Lord's, with Stokes, Jofra Archer, Joe Root and Chris Woakes the four survivors from that unforgettable super-over success. Archer was the man to bowl the most pressurised six balls of England's white-ball history and those memories inspired Stokes to use him again in the morning session on his first Test outing in four-and-a-half years. 77 runs with the bat 🏏44-8-111-5 with the ball 🔴Player of the Match 🏅 Shift. — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 14, 2025 He responded with a couple of magnificent wickets, ripping out Rishabh Pant's off stump and diving for a brilliant caught-and-bowled off Washington Sundar. 'That was genuinely the reason why we went with it, it felt right in my tummy that Jof was going to do something this morning to break the game open,' he said. 'Gut feel doesn't always work but those two wickets he got this morning obviously swung the game massively in our favour. The Pant wicket was massive.' Remarkably, Archer was possibly the only person among the 30,000 in attendance who had not twigged the relevance of the occasion. 'I said to him this morning, 'you know what today is don't you?',' said Stokes with a smile. 'And you know that highlight package of India knocking off 300-odd back in the day with Sourav Ganguly (in 2002). He thought that was six years today. A determined and well fought innings Took #TeamIndia close Chin up, Ravindra Jadeja 👍 👍 Scorecard ▶️ | @imjadeja — BCCI (@BCCI) July 14, 2025 'I said, 'no, that World Cup that we won'. He was like, 'oh that one'. He's an absolute beauty that boy.' Just as he did in 2019, Stokes left Lord's with the player-of-the-match award. He put in a quite incredible shift here, scoring 77 runs across both innings, producing a vital run out and taking five wickets. He was England's iron man on day five, bowling 19.2 overs across two lung-busting spells and dismissing key man KL Rahul as well as the defiant Bumrah late on. 'I have got some history of turning up in moments like that with the ball. I was pretty pumped,' he said. 'Bowling to win a Test match for your country on day five…if that doesn't get you going or up for going out there and putting in for your team, I don't know what will. The game was on the line; today it was going to be my decision on when I stopped bowling.'
