Backed by Globivest and regional investors, BioSapien's expanded funding round will support regulatory approvals, pilot studies, and broader market expansion of its FDA-cleared drug delivery platform.

BioSapien, a UAE-based healthtech startup, has extended its Pre-Series A round to over $8 million. The startup, which specialises in cancer-focused drug delivery systems, raised the additional capital from UAE VC firm Globivest alongside a group of international and regional investors.
The funding will be used to advance BioSapien's flagship product - a biodegradable implant designed to deliver chemotherapy directly to tumour sites. The solution aims to reduce systemic toxicity and improve targeted treatment outcomes for cancer patients. The latest capital injection will support regulatory approvals, including FDA pathways, preclinical studies, and commercial pilots in select international markets.
Founded in the US and now operating out of the UAE, BioSapien represents a growing trend of biotech startups relocating to or expanding within the region as healthcare innovation becomes a focal point for MENA investors. With the extended funding round, the company is also looking to expand its research team and build additional partnerships with healthcare providers.
The firm's core mission is to transform how chemotherapy is delivered, making it more efficient, less invasive, and ultimately more effective. According to BioSapien, its technology has already shown promising results in initial lab and animal studies, and the startup is now preparing to move toward first-in-human trials.

Jahez Acquires 76.6% of Qatar's Snoonu in $245 Million Deal

Jahez Acquires 76.6% of Qatar's Snoonu in $245 Million Deal Saudi-based delivery firm Jahez acquires 76.6% of Qatar's Snoonu for $245 million, boosting its presence in the GCC's on-demand and logistics markets. Jahez International, the Saudi-based food delivery and logistics platform, has signed a Share Purchase and Subscription Agreement (SPSA) to acquire a 76.56% stake in Qatar's Snoonu for $245 million (SR 919 million), according to a disclosure on the Saudi stock exchange. Under the agreement, Jahez will acquire 8.14 million shares - representing 75% of Snoonu's share capital - from existing shareholders for $225 million. The deal will be financed through a combination of internal cash resources, bank facilities, and Jahez's treasury shares. Additionally, Jahez will subscribe to 723,960 newly issued shares, securing an additional 1.56% stake for $20 million. The transaction values Snoonu at approximately QAR 1.17 billion ($320 million), making it the first Qatari startup to cross the QAR 1 billion threshold. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and a shareholder vote at Jahez's upcoming extraordinary general meeting. Upon completion, Jahez will hold a 76.56% stake, while Snoonu founder Hamad Al-Hajri will retain the remaining 23.44%. Al-Hajri will continue to serve as CEO, supported by Snoonu's existing executive team. A new four-member board will be formed, comprising three representatives from Jahez - including the chairman - and one from Al-Hajri. Snoonu, founded in 2019, operates an integrated e-commerce and delivery platform offering food, grocery, and retail services, alongside third-party logistics solutions for startups and SMEs. The acquisition aligns with Jahez's broader strategy to deepen its regional footprint and drive platform synergies across the GCC. The $20 million capital injection is set to support Snoonu's ongoing innovation efforts and market expansion initiatives. The agreement also includes standard terms and warranties, with lock-up periods on transferred shares governed by Saudi Arabia's Capital Market Authority.

Israeli strikes kill 66 in Gaza with children outside clinic among dead - War on Gaza

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed 66 people across the territory on Thursday, including eight children who died while queuing for nutritional supplements outside a health clinic. The agency said the children were among 17 victims in a strike on Deir el-Balah. According to the UN children's agency, the dead included a one-year-old boy whose mother said he had spoken his first words just hours earlier. The mother was critically injured, UNICEF added. "No parent should have to face such tragedy," UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell said in a statement. "The killing of families trying to access life-saving aid is unconscionable," she added. US-based charity Project Hope, which runs the facility, said the victims were waiting for the clinic to open to receive treatment for malnutrition, infections and illness. The charity gave a toll of 15 dead, including 10 children and two women. Its president and chief executive Rabih Torbay called the strike "a blatant violation of international humanitarian law." Yousef Al-Aydi, 30, was among dozens of people -- most of them women and children -- in the queue. "Suddenly, we heard the sound of a drone approaching, and then the explosion happened," he told AFP by phone. "The ground shook beneath our feet, and everything around us turned into blood and deafening screams." Mohammed Abu Ouda, 35, was also in the queue at Project Hope. "What was our fault? What was the fault of the children?" he asked. "I saw a mother hugging her child on the ground, both motionless -- they were killed instantly." Four people were killed and several injured in a separate pre-dawn air strike on a home in Al-Bureij camp in central Gaza, civil defence agency official Mohammed al-Mughair added. AFP footage from Al-Bureij showed a family including three young children sitting among rubble outside their tattered tent after an air strike hit a house next door. Elsewhere, three people, including a woman, were killed by Israeli gunfire on civilians near an aid centre in the southern city of Rafah, the civil defence agency said. More than 600 people have been killed around aid distributions and convoys in Gaza since late May, when Israel began allowing a trickle of supplies, the United Nations said in early July. The European Union on Thursday said it had struck a deal with Israel to open more crossings for aid, as well as to repair infrastructure and protect aid workers. "We count on Israel to implement every measure agreed," EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas wrote on X. Since launching its war on Gaza on 7 October 2023, Israel has killed nearly 58,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to Gaza's health ministry. Thousands more remain missing under the rubble. Independent estimates suggest the true death toll could be closer to 100,000. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Snap, crackle and pay: Ferrero to buy WK Kellogg for $3.1 bln - Markets & Companies

The Ferrero Group will acquire US cereal mainstay WK Kellogg for $3.1 billion as the Italian food giant expands further in North America, the companies announced Thursday. Ferrero, whose products include Nutella chocolate spread and Ferrero Rocher chocolate treats, will pay $23 per share in cash for WK Kellogg, which is known for Rice Krispies and Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, among other offerings. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, said a joint press release. On completion of the transaction, WK Kellogg will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Ferrero. The pricing of Kellogg represents a 31 percent premium to the company's closing price on Wednesday. Ferrero Chief Executive Giovanni Ferrero described the merger as "the coming together of two companies" with "generations of loyal consumers." "Over recent years, Ferrero has expanded its presence in North America," said Giovanni Ferrero. "Today's news is a key milestone in that journey, giving us confidence in the opportunities ahead." Ferrero, whose origins stem from its founding in Alba, Italy in 1946, has struck a number of deals in recent years to expand in North America, including the 2018 purchase of Nestle's US confectionary business for $2.8 billion in cash. Prior to the Kellogg deal, Ferrero had more than 14,000 employes across 22 plants and 11 offices in North America, according to the press release. Its US brands include Keebler, Famous Amos and Tic Tac. WK Kellogg is the cereal arm of Michigan-based Kellogg, which split itself up a couple of years ago, with its Kellanova snack brand being sold to Mars in August 2024 for around $36 billion. "We believe this proposed transaction maximizes value for our share owners and enables WK Kellogg Co to write the next chapter of our company's storied legacy," said Gary Pilnick, chief executive of WK Kellogg. "Joining Ferrero will provide WK Kellogg Co with greater resources and more flexibility to grow our iconic brands in this competitive and dynamic market." Kellogg dates its origins to 1894 when founder WK Kellogg invented the Corn Flakes cereal, the first of a series of offerings that later expanded to Raisin Bran and Froot Loops. Shares of WK Kellogg surged 30.9 percent in mid-morning trading. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
