Detroit high school student detained by ICE deported to Colombia, attorney says

Maykol Bogoya-Duarte, a Detroit high school student who was detained while en route to a school field trip site, has been deported to Colombia.
Christine Sauvé, manager of policy and communication at Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, confirmed Friday that Bogoya-Duarte was deported and had arrived safely in Colombia. The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center has been involved in the case and represents the teen.
CBS Detroit has reached out to ICE for a comment on the situation.
Bogoya-Duarte was just 3.5 credits away from graduating from Western International High School through Detroit Public Schools Community District, and some of those involved in the case hoped he would be allowed to graduate before being deported.
The circumstances in this case started on May 20. On that date, Bogoya-Duarte and three other classmates were on their way to Lake Erie Metropark to meet up with others on a school field trip.
While en route, Rockwood police pulled them over.
Ruby Robinson, senior managing attorney with Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, has said police had difficulty communicating with the student in English and called U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Federal officials realized he was in the country illegally.
In a statement issued in early June, a CBP spokesperson said, "Local police pulled over the vehicle and found the driver had no license—only a City of Detroit ID. Border Patrol confirmed he was in the country illegally, having ignored a judge's removal order and lost his appeal."
While he and his mother had entered the United States in 2022, Robinson said they had not been successful in seeking protection.
Bogoya-Duarte called his teachers, reporting that he was being detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"After the student was apprehended District police engaged the authorities that had the student in custody to ensure his safety and to advocate on his behalf but ultimately the authorities were following procedure and the law," the school district said.
The teen was first taken to Chippewa County Correctional Facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Arrest made after Miami Beach condo resident pistol-whipped during home invasion, police say

An arrest has been made in a Miami Beach condominium home invasion in which a man was pistol-whipped, and money and a phone were stolen, according to Miami Beach police. Investigators the same suspect committed an armed burglary shortly before that. According to police, on Tuesday, June 17, officers were sent to Flamingo Towers at 1508 Bay Road to check out reports of an armed robbery. A woman who lives in the building said she was walking to a trash chute when an armed man, who police identified as 31-year-old Brian Lopez of Hialeah, pulled a gun on her and demanded that she take him to her unit, according to police. Once there, Lopez allegedly threatened the woman, a person who lives with her (identified in the police report as J.K.), and someone who was staying with them. He demanded that they get on the ground and hand over their belongings, investigators said. "Initially, J.K. resisted the defendant's commands and refused to get on the ground. The defendant then pistol whipped J.K. by striking him on the top of his head, causing a minor laceration," according to the report. Investigators said J.K. was forced to transfer $1,500 via cell and Lopez stole one of their cellphones. He then allegedly demanded that they take him to their vehicle. When the group made it to the lobby, J.K. screamed for help and Lopez took off, according to the report. He was taken into custody a short time later. During the course of their investigation, police said they determined that Lopez had also committed another burglary in the building prior to this incident. In that incident, Lopez is accused of stealing a man's wallet, phone and keys to his unit. Lopez is facing one count of armed home invasion, three counts of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, and one count of armed burglary with battery. During his first court appearance on Friday, the judge found there was probable cause for the charges and ordered that he be held without bond.

For Democrats, handcuffs are the latest symbol of resistance to Trump

A growing number of Democratic officials are being arrested in tense situations with federal agents over immigration, raising their profiles in a party angry with President Donald Trump's policies. Images of Democratic officials bound in handcuffs, jostling in scrums with immigration officers or standing defiantly on courthouse steps have ricocheted across the internet in recent weeks, creating some new political battle lines in Trump's second term. New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, a mayoral candidate, was the latest Democratic elected official to be arrested after he tried to escort a defendant from his appearance at an immigration court this week.
