Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to skip the inauguration of three Kolkata metro projects by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22, a top state government official said on Monday.Banerjee, during her tenure as the railway minister, had planned these metro projects, he claimed. The decision to skip the inauguration of the metro projects was taken in the backdrop of alleged harassment of migrants from West Bengal in the BJP-ruled states, he said."There have been charges of linguistic discrimination and the harassment of the Bengalis in several states, with the alleged support of the BJP and the central government. Protests are underway to oppose such discriminatory treatment being meted out to Bengali migrants. In such a situation, the chief minister does not wish to share the stage with officials from the central government," the top bureaucrat told PTI. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw , in a letter dated August 14, invited Banerjee to the inauguration of three metro projects on Friday.Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade section of the Green Line, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)-Beleghata stretch of the Orange Line, and Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar (airport) section of the Yellow Line."These railway projects were originally planned and funded by Mamata Banerjee during her tenure as the railway minister. After years of slow progress, the BJP is now inaugurating them before the elections to claim credit. The chief minister was only given a routine invitation via letter," the official claimed. The chief minister had, in the past, attended central government events to respect the constitutional protocol, he said."But during these programmes, BJP supporters created chaos and acted disrespectfully, turning the official functions into political platforms. Given this into account, no option will be given for such unacceptable conduct," he added.

Change Aligarh's name to ‘Harigarh': UP deputy CM at ‘Hindu Gaurav Diwas' event

Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday demanded that Aligarh be renamed "Harigarh" just like Ayodhya and Prayagraj. CM Yogi Adityanath and deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya at a recent function.(PTI File) Addressing a 'Hindu Gaurav Diwas' ceremony to mark the death anniversary of Uttar Pradesh CM Kalyan Singh, Maurya said that it was his wish that "Babuji", as Singh is popularly known, be conferred with the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour. Kalyan Singh, a native of Aligarh who served twice as the CM of Uttar Pradesh, is remembered for his role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and for steering the BJP's early growth in the state. "You all know Ayodhya was once called Faizabad. But under the leadership of our respected chief minister (Adityanath), it was renamed Ayodhya again. Similarly, Prayagraj was earlier known as Allahabad. Just two days ago, Shahjahanpur's Jalalabad was renamed Parshurampuri. Then there should be no delay in renaming Aligarh to Harigarh," Maurya said. The deputy CM shared the stage with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Cabinet Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister Jitin Prasada, and other dignitaries, who paid homage to Kalyan Singh. Maurya also targeted the Samajwadi Party (SP) from the stage, saying the opposition party's pitch on PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) is "nothing but divide and rule". "On Babuji's death anniversary, we pledge to uproot the SP's cycle (party symbol) and send it to Saifai. That will be a true tribute to Babuji," he said, drawing applause from BJP workers present.

Rekha Gupta attack: Forensic team to probe accused's call records, phone data

Day after the attack on Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her Civil Lines camp office, the investigators are set to probe the accused's phone and trace his movement from his arrival in the capital till he reached the CM's office. The 41-year-old accused, Rajeshbhai Khimji, who is a resident of Gujarat's Rajkot.(PTI) A forensic team will examine the phone of the attacker to probe whether he attempted to or has erased any digital evidence related to the offence, PTI quoted a source as saying. The source said that all deleted photos, videos, call records and other types of data would be scrutinised to see whether these point towards any prior planning of the attack, and if so, would be retrieved. The Delhi police is probing the attack on CM Gupta from all possible angles, PTI quoted sources as saying. The movements of the attacker will be traced from the time he arrived in Delhi to the attack. Central agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau, are also assisting the Delhi police with the probe. The 41-year-old accused, Rajeshbhai Khimji, who is a resident of Gujarat's Rajkot, will be taken back to his native place by the police team to gather information about his background, and to find out possible motives behind the attack. "From the time he boarded a train to Delhi till he reached the CM's camp office, every step will be traced," PTI quoted a source as saying. The source further said that footage from the CCTV cameras along the route and in areas he visited would be checked. The accused has reportedly told the police that his actions were in objection to the recent Supreme Court order on stray dogs in the National Capital Region. Investigators have discovered that Khimji had, earlier this year, staged a protest in Rajkot in support of stray animals. The police are now investigating whether there was any connection between the past protest and the attack on the Delhi CM.

Land acquisition for UKP 3: Govt. has to pay ₹2 lakh crore compensation

A whopping amount of over ₹2 lakh crore has to be disbursed as compensation for the acquisition of 1.33 lakh acres to be acquired for Upper Krishna Project-3 if an average is calculated as per the additional compensation awards given by the courts, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said on Thursday. Responding to a question from BJP member P.H. Poojar, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the government has gone on an appeal against additional compensation awarded by the court as government will have to shell out ₹66,563 crores to 29,566 acres which has been acquired already. The government has estimated compensation of ₹2.01 lakh crores to be provided for acquiring 1,33,867 acres based on average calculation of additional compensation awarded by the courts. In his written reply, Mr. Shivakumar said that 28,407 cases were pending in court seeking higher compensation for land being acquired for UKP-3. He said that there was a nexus with advocates involved in this. However, Mr. Poojar took exception to this statement and said that the additional compensation has been given by court due to the delay in process of awarding compensation. The Deputy Chief Minister said that a proposal was being finalised in the Cabinet to solve the problem, and that he has even sought transfer the land acquisition process from Revenue Department to Irrigation Department. 'Some of the court awards have been in the range of ₹8 crores to ₹10 crore. Even in Bengaluru, such high rates do not prevail.' He also appealed to the elected representatives to convince the farmers for enhanced compensation and consent to acquisition, and the government would come up with a formula. 'Farmers are unhappy with the Cabinet sub-committee's decision during the Basavaraj Bommai government. Convince the farmers and we will come up with a plan,' he said.
