2026 Honda Prelude Near-Production Prototype Revealed

2026 Honda Prelude Near-Production Prototype Revealed

Motor 111 hours ago
You know the reborn Prelude has been a long time coming when it's making a second appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and you still can't buy one.
Honda brought a concept
to last year's event and returned this past weekend with a near-production prototype. Unlike its first outing in the UK, this time the Prelude ran up the famous hill. Honda also allowed bystanders to sit inside the finished cabin, a sharp contrast to 2024's approach when the doors were locked and the windows covered to block prying eyes.
A new walkaround video shot during the festival showcases two flavors of the Prelude, including the Boost Blue Pearl car that tackled the hill climb. Essentially, the three-door liftback picks up where the
Civic Coupe
left off and seems decently practical despite its sloping roofline. It features a split-folding rear seat, allowing you to fit two passengers in the back, provided they're not too tall.
As you'd expect, rear visibility is compromised by the thick C-pillars, but that's the price of a sleek coupe design. Inside, the layout borrows heavily from the Civic and
Integra
, so most of it should feel familiar. While both of those models offer a stick, the sixth-generation Prelude will be automatic-only. The quirky CR-Z once combined a manual with an electrified powertrain, but unfortunately, that's not the case here.
Even though you can't row your own gears,
Honda
has added an S+ button to enable 'sharper simulated shifts,' mimicking an eight-speed gearbox via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. The fakery doesn't stop there since engine noise is also artificially enhanced. Given Honda's push toward electrification and increasingly strict emissions standards, a purely gas-powered Prelude with a proper manual seems unlikely.
Despite
debuting back in October 2023 at the Tokyo Mobility Show
, Honda remains tight-lipped about the technical specs. However, it has confirmed that the Prelude will inherit the Civic Type R's dual-axis front suspension and adaptive dampers. It's also said to have wider front and rear tracks than the Civic, a shorter wheelbase, a 10% lighter body, increased rigidity, and a stiffer suspension setup.
Don't expect to chase Nürburgring lap times, though. Honda has already said the Prelude
won't be 'the sportiest, zippiest car
that's going to be tossed into the circuits.' Whether it can live up to the legacy of previous generations remains to be seen. The design doesn't exactly reference the past, but seeing the glass half full, at least Honda didn't turn it into a Prelude SUV. I'm looking at you,
Mitsubishi Eclipse
.
The new Prelude will go on sale in the United States later this year and arrive in Europe in 2026.

Tariffs are ruining Volvo's plans to sell new EVs in the US.

Tariffs are ruining Volvo's plans to sell new EVs in the US. The Swedish automaker said it will take a one-off, non-cash impairment charge of 11.4 billion Swedish kronor ($1.19 billion) in the second quarter related to two plug-in models: the EX90 and ES90. That means Volvo is basically reducing the value of the EVs on its balance sheet. The reason is because Donald Trump's tariffs are making it impossible for Volvo to make a profit on these models. The EX60 is still on track, apparently.

Porsche Hikes Prices Again Due to 'Market Conditions'

A Porsche being expensive is not news. These cars always have been, and always will be. But, recently, the automaker implemented price increases across its entire lineup, citing "market conditions." Initially brought to our attention by Road & Track , Porsche has since confirmed these price increases. "With our customers front of mind, we keep a regular watch on market conditions, absorbing costs where we can and making adjustments only when it's absolutely necessary to do so," a spokesperson said in a statement. "Where possible, we have taken steps to support our customers, but market conditions necessitate incremental adjustments to MSRP. The price adjustment encompasses all models and varies from model to model, from between 2.3 and 3.6 percent." Here are the previous and current prices for each Porsche base model. Model New Price Previous Price Increase 2025 718 Cayman $77,395 $74,795 3.5% 2026 911 Carrera $134,650 $129,950 3.6% 2026 Cayenne $91,950 $88,795 3.6% 2026 Macan $66,950 $65,350 2.4% 2026 Panamera $112,450 $108,550 3.6% 2026 Taycan $106,250 $102,550 3.6% Porsche also tells us, "market conditions necessitate incremental adjustments to individual option pricing and delivery fees from time to time." So, depending on what options your car has, the new price may be more than 3.6 percent higher than it was a few months ago. Porsche didn't blame tariffs specifically here, but it's one of a handful of volume automakers that doesn't make cars in the US. The company builds all its cars in Germany, except for the Cayenne, which is made in Slovakia, and in very small numbers in Malaysia for that market only. The Trump administration put a 25-percent tariff on imported automobiles and automobile parts in place back in April, on top of a preexisiting 2.5% import duty. Trump on Saturday threatened a 30-percent tariff on all goods from the EU . This, of course, would apply to all Porsche cars. Earlier this year, we reported that Porsche is considering starting US production . Obviously, its customers have long been used to paying premium prices for their cars, and while a 3.6 percent increase might not be a huge deal for 911, Taycan, and Panamera buyers, it could be an impediment to customers of less expensive, larger-volume models like the Cayenne and Macan. Porsche is in a precarious situation right now. Its sales are down globally—especially in China, where buyers are rejecting non-domestic automakers—and customer response to EVs like the Taycan and Macan Electric is less enthusiastic than the automaker hoped. US sales have remained strong, but buyers here aren't adopting EVs as quickly as everyone (including Porsche) thought they would, and tariffs are complicating everything. It just illustrates the rewriting of the automotive order. Up until recently, Porsche was the envy of the auto industry, wildly profitable and beloved by so many. That's still true today, but the picture is not as rosy in Stuttgart as it once was. 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 Will Usher In a New Generation for the Compact SUV

The Volkswagen ID.4 will be overhauled for a new generation with the introduction of the 2026 model year, according to a report by Autocar. Speaking to the U.K. publication, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer called the redesigned compact electric SUV "a huge step up." The report also suggests that the redesign could see VW drop the ID.4 name and instead refer to the model as the Electric Tiguan. The Volkswagen ID.4 is practical, it's comfortable, and it's got an attractive starting price, but the current generation is starting to show its age. With that in mind, the ID.4 is reportedly about to get a facelift, and it will be major enough that the 2026 model may as well be considered a new generation, according to a new story from Autocar. Marc Urbano | Car and Driver 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Speaking to Autocar about the upcoming redesign, Volkswagen's CEO of passenger cars, Thomas Schäfer, called the new ID.4 "really beautiful." Schäfer suggested that the redesign will put the ID.4's looks more in line with those of the upcoming ID.1 and ID.2, both of which are headed for Europe. "We felt it needed to fit in with the new design language going forward, since it is still our most important electric vehicle in numbers," he said. Schäfer also hinted at just how much work has been done to overhaul the compact electric SUV. "We'll redo the ID.4 completely inside and out. It will be a completely different car—a huge step up," he said. "It's also to stay competitive for a while: let's [bring] a completely new one." Marc Urbano | Car and Driver 2024 Volkswagen ID.4. In fact, the changes could be headed for more than just the sheetmetal, with Autocar reporting that the ID.4 name may be dropped in favor of calling the SUV the Electric Tiguan. The name change hasn't been confirmed, but it wouldn't be totally out of the blue. Schäfer previously suggested to Autocar that it would be foolish of the brand not to cash in on its historical names. "We've decided we're not going to throw away the traditional, successful names that have carried us for so long, that we've invested in for so long, like Golf and Tiguan. Why would you let them go?" Schäfer asked the outlet. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio
