Kota Kinabalu: The Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah is progressing despite concerns over the contractor handling Package WP-35, which covers the upgrading of Jalan Kampung Nabutan to Ranau. State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said work has already started on several sections, though some areas remain untouched due to ongoing land acquisition issues. 'I visited the site last week, covering packages 33, 34 and 35. Some clearing and preparation works have already started, but other areas remain untouched due to ongoing land acquisition processes,' he said. Shahelmey added that a special committee set up by the Pan Borneo Sabah Project Steering Committee is closely monitoring the progress, with monthly reviews on land acquisition and utility relocation. He assured that his Ministry will continue to monitor the project closely and seek regular updates from the Federal Works Ministry. 'Physical progress is visible in some sections, but it will take another three to six months before we can see more substantial progress,' he said during the Incentive Award Presentation Ceremony for Outstanding SPM Students in Putatan, Friday. The WP-35 package recently became the focus of a viral post alleging internal problems within the contractor, including a breakdown in partnership and questions over its ability to complete the work. Federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who was also named in the allegations, denied any wrongdoing and has since lodged a police report. Meanwhile, Shahelmey said roads in Beaufort and Sipitang that are frequently flooded are being reviewed for potential upgrades, including those near schools. He said district engineers have been instructed to assess these flood-prone stretches on a case-by-case basis and provide recommendations for immediate action to keep the roads safe and accessible. 'For roads that are completely cut off by flooding, district engineers and appointed contractors will carry out emergency works to restore access,' he said. Shahelmey also noted that parts of the Beaufort-Sipitang road, which often faces severe flooding, are within the Pan Borneo Highway construction area. He said his Ministry will investigate the causes of flooding in these sections and consider long-term solutions. 'For sections not covered under the Pan Borneo project, we will evaluate whether upgrades or other repairs are needed to address the flooding issue,' he added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Brazil demands Meta remove childlike erotic chatbots from platforms
BRASÍLIA: Brazil has formally requested Meta to eliminate chatbots that imitate children and engage in sexually suggestive dialogues across its platforms. The attorney general's office issued an extrajudicial notice demanding immediate removal of these AI-generated profiles. Meta's AI Studio allows users to develop customised bots exhibiting childlike language and appearance on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Authorities condemned the proliferation of bots enabling 'sexually explicit dialogue' involving simulated minors. The AGU stated these tools dangerously 'promote the eroticization of children' through inappropriate interactions. Investigators provided documented evidence of sexually charged exchanges with bots impersonating underage individuals. While the notice carries no penalties, officials reiterated Meta's legal obligation to remove unlawful user-generated content. This action follows Brazil's Supreme Court ruling holding tech firms accountable for harmful material on their networks. The crackdown coincides with public fury over influencer Hytalo Santos' arrest for allegedly exploiting minors through suggestive Instagram content. Santos' account was deactivated after police detained him for exposing adolescents to sexualised situations. - AFP

Brazil asks Meta to remove chatbots that 'eroticise' children
BRASILIA: Brazil's government has asked United States technology giant Meta to rid its platforms of chatbots that mimic children and can make sexually suggestive remarks, the attorney-general's office (AGU) announced yesterday. Users of Meta's platforms, which include Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, can create and customise such bots using the company's generative artificial intelligence, AI Studio. The AGU said in a statement that Meta must "immediately" remove "artificial intelligence robots that simulate profiles with childlike language and appearance and are allowed to engage in sexually explicit dialogue". It denounced the "proliferation" of such bots in what it called an "extrajudicial notice" sent to Meta last week, adding that they "promote the eroticisation of children". The document cited several examples of sexually charged conversations with bots pretending to be minors. The AGU's request does not include sanctions, but the agency said it had reminded Meta that online platforms in Brazil must take down illicit content created by their users, even without a court order. It comes at a time of outrage in the South American nation over a case of alleged child sexual exploitation by Hytalo Santos, a well-known influencer who posted content on Instagram featuring partially naked minors taking part in suggestive dances. Santos was arrested last week as part of an investigation into "exposure with sexual connotations" to adolescents, and his Instagram account is no longer available. In June, Brazil's Supreme Court voted to require tech companies to assume greater responsibility for user-generated content.

Photo: Kseniya Alexandrova/Instagram The modelling and pageant worlds are mourning Russian Miss Universe 2017 contestant Kseniya Alexandrova, who has died weeks after an elk crashed through her car's windshield. The Miss Russia 2017 first runner-up was 30. Alexandrova was also a television host and held a financial degree from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, according to Us Weekly . In 2022 she earned a psychology degree at Moscow Pedagogical State University and began practising as a psychodrama therapist. The stunning encounter occurred on July 5, as Alexandrova and her husband of four months drove through Tver Oblast, a region about 200 miles (321km) northwest of Moscow, Russian news outlet Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported. They were travelling home from the village of Rzhev in their Porsche Panamera – Alexandrova in the passenger seat and her husband at the wheel – when the massive animal leaped directly in front of them on the M-9 highway. 'From the moment it jumped out until the impact, a split second passed,' her husband, who was not named, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta. 'I didn't have time to do anything.' He was unhurt, but his wife was critically injured. 'She was unconscious, her head was fractured, everything was covered in blood,' he told Rossiyskaya Gazeta. 'The frontal bones of the skull were broken – it was an open cranial-brain injury.' Fellow motorists pulled over to help, and Alexandrova was taken to Moscow's Sklifosovsky Institute for Emergency Medicine, where she remained in a coma. Despite her catastrophic injuries, she clung to life for more than a month before dying on Aug 12, according to the Russian outlet. 'She knew how to inspire, support and give warmth to everyone who was around,' the agency said. 'For us, she will forever remain a symbol of beauty, kindness and inner strength. We sincerely mourn and express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and everyone who had the good fortune to know Ksenia.' Miss Universe pageant organisers also paid tribute. 'The Miss Universe Organization extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and everyone whose life was touched by the light of Miss Universe Russia 2017, Kseniya Alexandrova,' the pageant said in a social media post captioning video of her speaking during the contest.
