Two African island sites added to UNESCO World Heritage list (PHOTOS)
The announcement was made on Sunday during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris. According to UNESCO, both sites represent unique natural ecosystems.
Located off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, the 88-island Bijagos Archipelago has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1996. It is rich in biodiversity, hosting dugongs, dolphins, and over 870,000 migratory birds. Key sites include Poilao Island, a major sea turtle nesting area.
Sierra Leone's Tiwai Island, a 12-square-kilometer island site on the Moa River, is part of the Gola-Tiwai complex, which also includes the nearby Gola Rainforest National Park. It is the country's first UNESCO World Heritage site.
Known for its biodiversity, the island hosts 11 species of primates, including the endangered Diana monkey and Western chimpanzees, as well as over 130 species of birds. Nearly destroyed during the 1990s civil war, the island was preserved through efforts led by the Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA).
Two other African sites were added to the UNESCO list during the same session. Malawi's Mount Mulanje was included for its unique endemic flora and popular hiking trails. Cameroon's Diy-Gid-Biy cultural landscape, located in the Mandara Mountains and dating from the 12th to 17th centuries, was listed for its archaeological sites.
The continent is currently home to over 100 World Heritage sites, including iconic places like the Okavango Delta, Botswana, Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia, and Timbuktu, Mali.
In May, UNESCO pledged support to the 11 remaining non-represented African countries to develop new nominations, as announced at a recent International Conference on Cultural Heritage in Kenya.

Angel Reese is on a double-double streak once again. The Chicago Sky star recorded her 10th-straight double-double on Tuesday night in their 91-68 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. That made her the first player in WNBA history to rack up multiple streaks of at least 10 straight games with a double-double. Reese's current streak dates back to their loss to the Atlanta Dream on June 22, when she had 10 points and 19 rebounds. There are actually just five games this season in which Reese has fallen shy of that mark. She entered Tuesday's game averaging 14 points and 12.6 rebounds per contest. Reese went on a 15-game double-double streak last year in her rookie campaign with the Sky. She averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game last summer and finished in second in the Rookie of the Year race behind Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. They Sky went just 13-27 last season, missed the playoffs and parted ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. Reese dropped 11 points and 11 rebounds in their blowout loss to the Lynx on Tuesday night, which marked their first game back from the All-Star break. She secured her double-double midway through the fourth quarter after driving in and sinking a tough contested layup in the paint. Reese also picked up her seventh technical foul of the season in the loss. If she's assessed another one, she'll face an automatic one-game suspension from the league. But despite her double-double, the Lynx still rolled to the dominant win. All five of their starters finished in double figures, with both Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride putting up 19 points a piece. They shot nearly 45% from the field as a group and held the Sky to just 12 points in the third period while breaking the game wide open. That pushed the Lynx to 21-4 on the season, and a perfect 13-0 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Kamilla Cardoso also had a double-double for Chicago with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Kia Nurse finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Those two, along with Reese, were the only players to hit double figures for the Sky. The Sky now sit at 7-16 on the season, which is the third-worst record in the league ahead of only the Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun. Reese and the Sky will be back in action next on Thursday against the Seattle Storm.

Francisco Alvarez's home run powers Mets to 3-2 comeback win over Angels
The Mets were down early, but a three-run fifth inning -- powered by Francisco Alvarez's two-run homer -- was the difference in their 3-2 win over the Angels at Citi Field on Tuesday night. Alvarez hit 11 homers in Triple-A when he was demoted, but he went deep for his fourth homer of the season, his first since June and his first at home this year. The Mets (58-44) have won three straight games and remain 0.5 games behind the Phillies, who won earlier in the evening. Here are the takeaways... - The Mets' defense helped out Frankie Montas early in this one. Mike Trout hit a one-out single with Nolan Schanuel on second. Juan Soto fielded the ball and threw a one-hopper to Alvarez, who tagged Schanuel to keep the Angels off the board. Soto has six outfield assists after having nine all of last season. Montas benefited from some great defense behind him as he scattered baserunners throughout his outing, only allowing one run on a Jorge Soler bomb in the second inning. However, things started to unravel for the right-hander in the fifth. Montas allowed two doubles with a walk sandwiched between, as the Angels took a 2-0 lead. But Montas would escape a bases-loaded jam and get through five innings. Montas pitched into the sixth but could not complete the inning after allowing a two-out single to Logan O'Hoppe. Rico Garcia picked up the final out of the sixth and ended Montas' night. The veteran right-hander tossed 91 pitches (58 strikes) across 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six. - The Mets' offense was kept in check by veteran Kyle Hendricks through four innings. The only hit came on a Mark Vientos bloop single that centerfielder Jo Adell let drop in front of him. But that all changed in the fifth. With two outs, Brett Baty hit a double and Alvarez plated him with a monstrous two-run shot that got the Citi Field crowd on their feet. It's just Alvarez's fourth longball this season and the first at home. Ronny Mauricio singled and stole second before Brandon Nimmo singled him home to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. - New York could not take advantage of shoddy Angels infield defense, as Alvarez and Mauricio reached on two errors to lead off the seventh. Nimmo and Lindor struck out before Soto was walked intentionally to load the bases. Alonso struck out to end the threat. The top four of the Mets lineup (Nimmo, Lindor, Soto, Alonso) went a combined 1-for-13 with three walks and four strikeouts. Soto did pick up his 13th stolen base this season, setting a new career-high. - The Mets were without Huascar Brazoban and Edwin Diaz after they worked two games in a row, but the bullpen pieced it together. Garcia allowed a hit in one inning of work before Reed Garrett picked up four outs without allowing a baserunner. Ryne Stanek came on to close it out and allowed a leadoff single. Stanek bounced back, striking out Luis Rengifo and getting Zach Neto to fly out. Schanuel hit a single to set up Trout with two outs. The former MVP popped out to Alonso to end the game.
