Filippo Inzaghi joins Palermo: Italian takes on next project after guiding former club Pisa to Serie A
Filippo Inzaghi was hired on Tuesday by Palermo after the former World Cup winner left Pisa following its historic promotion to Serie A.
In a statement, Palermo said that Inzaghi had signed a 'multi-year contract' starting from next month.
According to Italian media reports, Palermo paid Pisa nearly one million euros (1.1 million USD) to take Inzaghi as the Sicilians, owned by the City Football Group, which also owns Manchester City, attempt its own return to Serie A.

Pisa finished second in Serie B under 51-year-old Inzaghi and gained promotion to the top-flight for the first time in 34 years.
The Tuscan club, whose Arena Garibaldi stadium is in the shadow of the famous leaning tower of Pisa, moved up to Serie A with play-off winners Cremonese and division winners Sassuolo.
Palermo finished eighth and missed out on promotion via the play-offs after being beaten in the first round by Juve Stabia.

While Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described the atmosphere at his team's game against Los Angeles FC as "a bit strange", as a little over 22,000 spectators came to watch at the 71,000 capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday. "This is exactly what the FIFA Club World Cup was created for: a world-class stage where new stories are told, new heroes emerge, and club football fans feel part of something bigger," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement. Designed as a glittering curtain-raiser for the 2026 World Cup, FIFA hopes to build enthusiasm for the quadrennial spectacle among often soccer-ambivalent fans in the U.S., which will co-host the tournament next year with Canada and Mexico. Concerns had been rampant, however, after a lacklustre Copa America in 2024 that played out on sub-par pitches to half-empty stadiums and ended with a fan security fiasco at the final in Miami.

Kanpur: Veteran leg spinner Piyush Chawla, who was part of India's two World Cup winning campaigns, will give tips to budding cricketers in a special coaching camp organised by the Sports Hub (TSH) to be held from June 19 to June 25. He represented India in three tests, 25 ODIs and 7 T-20 matches and captured 43 wickets across the three formats of the game. He had taken retirement from all formats of the cricket on June 6 this year. Addressing the media, former Ranji Trophy captain Shashikant Khandekar, presently coach at the TSH, said that it would be a boon for the city cricketers that a world class spinner would give them tips and share his experiences in the camp in which around 160 children would participate. Khandekar stated that all had witnessed that spinners, especially leg spinners, were playing a significant role in all formats of cricket including T-20. Shashikant said that Piyush will stay in the camp for three days, thereafter he and former Ranji Trophy player Mohd Amir would take charge of the camp which would be held in morning and evening sessions. RP Singh, director sports, stated that the TSH would conduct more such camps and give opportunities to local talent to meet the international level players and learn from them.

Indian Archery League Set To Launch In October 2025; AAI Hires Lee As India Coach

The highly anticipated franchise-based 'Indian Archery League' is finally set to commence in October at the Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi, featuring six city-based teams, as confirmed by Archery Association of India (AAI) treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril on Tuesday. Initially conceptualised in 2020, the league faced delays due to a lack of sponsors. However, the AAI has now secured sponsorship and is in discussions with broadcasters, including Sony Sports and JioHotstar, to launch the league this year. This will be the world's first franchise league in archery, and the federation is hopeful of a strong response that will significantly aid in the development of Indian archers, who are yet to win an Olympic medal. 'Everything will be finalised by the end of this month, and we are hopeful of launching the league in October. We are calling it the Indian Archery League, but the name is not yet finalised," Joris told PTI. Three teams from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have already been confirmed, with the remaining franchises to be decided soon. Each franchise will represent a city, depending on ownership and league plans. Each team will consist of eight archers, with four in recurve and four in compound, including two men and two women in each category. It will be mandatory for each team to include two overseas archers. 'We've seen how the IPL has revolutionised Indian cricket, and we are confident this league will do something similar for archery," another AAI official said. As reported by PTI last week, Lee's appointment has now been formally approved, and the contract, running until the LA Games, has been sent to him for signature. 'The Sports Authority of India has accepted all his terms and conditions after the final round of interviews. He is expected to sign the contract in the next couple of days," Joris confirmed. Lee is expected to join the Indian team after the World Championship in September and before the inaugural Archery League. Aged 67, Lee has an impressive coaching legacy, having guided archers to over 300 World Cup medals, including more than 150 gold, and three Olympic podium finishes during his tenure with the USA from 2006 to 2024. He also coached Australia's Simon Fairweather to gold at Sydney 2000 and Tim Cuddihy to bronze at Athens 2004. His most decorated protégé is Brady Ellison, a five-time Olympic medallist, widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest names, thanks in large part to Lee's structured training programmes and innovative techniques. 'Initially, we wanted to offer him a contract until the 2032 Olympics, but considering his age, we'll review things after Los Angeles," Joris added. Lee is expected to work across both the elite and junior recurve programmes, further strengthening India's Olympic prospects. Rahul Banerjee likely to travel as women's coach Former Olympian and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rahul Banerjee, currently the personal coach of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das, is likely to travel with the Indian team for the World Cup Stage 4 in Madrid (July 8–13) and the World Championships in Gwangju (September 5–12). If confirmed, Banerjee will replace long-serving women's coach Poornima Mahato. 'As per the current policy, the coach of the top-ranked Indian archer travels with the team.
