Two more rate cuts possible this year, says BSP Gov. Remolona
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. on Thursday hinted at the possibility of two more rate cuts this year, as he said the current inflation and economic growth levels give the central bank room for further easing.
Speaking with reporters, Remolona said there could be two more rate cuts this year, with three more policy meetings scheduled this year on August 26, October 6, and December 9.
'Pwede, pwede naman. Meron pa tayong August, meron pa tayong October, December [It's possible. We still have August, we still have October, December],' Remolona said on the sidelines of the BSP's 32nd Anniversary Multimedia Exhibit in Manila.
'There's room because inflation is low and growth is a bit lower also, except that, the cuts cannot really compensate entirely for the slowdown in growth,' he told reporters.
Inflation clocked in at 1.3% in May, marking the fourth straight month of deceleration. Official figures for June are scheduled to be released on Friday, July 4. The BSP projects this to possibly have hit as high as 1.9% in June.
Economic growth, meanwhile, was recorded at 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025, with Philippine economic managers expecting the full-year expansion to average between 5.5% to 6.5% this year.
'Kasi 'yung slowdown in growth, dahil sa uncertainty 'yun eh. Napo-postpone 'yung big-ticket consumption items, napo-postpone investments, tapos 'yung exports dahil bumagal din ang ano eh, global growth,' Remolona said.
(The growth slowdown is because of uncertainty. The big-ticket consumption items are being postponed, investments are being postponed, and exports have decelerated because of the slower global growth.)
The Monetary Board of the BSP last month cut key policy rates by 25 basis points, bringing the target reverse repurchase rate to 5.25%, the overnight deposit rate to 4.75%, and the overnight lending facility rate to 5.75%.
'If things remain on track, then we will probably cut once more, but depending on the data… But for now things remain on track. Isa pa [One more],' Remolona said in June. — BM, GMA Integrated News

PAGCOR: Online gambling transactions down 50% since e-wallets ban
Online gambling transactions have dropped by 50% since the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) prohibited e-wallets from linking to online gaming platforms, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) said Wednesday. PAGCOR Chairman Al Tengco reported the development during a briefing on the operations of the state-run firm vis-a-vis its expected contributions to the proposed P6.7-trillion budget for 2026. "Para po sa kaalaman ng lahat, naobserbahan po ng PAGCOR, simula po noong araw ng Linggo hanggang kahapon ay bumagsak po ng siguro ay 50% ang online gaming transactions simula nu'ng inuutos ng Bangko Sentral na mag-delink muna ang mga e-payment platforms sa integration with online gaming companies," Tengco said before the House Committee on Appropriations. (This is to inform the public that based on Pagcor's observations, from Sunday to today, online gambling transactions went down by 50% due to the BSP order banning e-wallets from integrating with online gaming companies.) "It is the BSP which regulates the e-payment platforms, and we have been exchanging information with them. I would like to give credit to the BSP because they are also coming with stricter guidelines to control the e-payment platforms," Tengco added. Last Thursday, BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan told the Senate committee on games and amusement that e-wallets were given 48 hours to take down icons and links to online gambling platforms. E-wallet service providers GCash and Maya later announced that they have complied with the Sunday deadline. Tangonan made the announcement as he and other officials were being grilled by senators on steps taken to curb the alleged addiction of many Filipinos in online gaming. Meanwhile, Tengco said PAGCOR still has a lot of catching up to do to prevent the addiction, given that only 40% of online gambling providers are legally licensed and, thus, regulated by his office. "Our regulation is not perfect, but I am assuring the members of this committee and of the House that we are trying our best to make certain adjustments to cope with the exponential growth of online gaming, not only here in the Philippines," Tengco said. (Sadly, less than 40% of online gambling are legally operating ... the remaining 60% are illegal who operate offshore.) The illegal online gaming operators, Tengco said, are based in Russia, Dubai, Cambodia and Singapore, to name a few. On the other hand, Tengco said there are at least 70 online gaming providers which have license to operate issued by Pagcor. "We have reached out to the Department of Information and Communications Technology, as well as Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, the Philippine National Police and its Cybercrime department para masugpo po ito pero unfortunately, hirap na hirap po tayong pigilin itong illegal online gambling," Tengco said. (We have reached out to the Department of Information and Communications Technology, as well as Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, the Philippine National Police and its Cybercrime department to stop illegal online gambling but unfortunately, it's very difficult to do.) "Doon po ang pagkakaiba sapagkat masasabi ko naman na doon po sa kumulang na 70 na may lisensya eh sumusunod sila sa mga patakaran," Tengco added. (There lies the difference because the ones licensed to operate here are compliant with our regulations.) Late last month, PAGCOR reported a double-digit growth in the country's gaming industry in terms of total revenues, reaching over P200 billion in the first half of 2025, amid the popularity of online or digital betting among Filipinos. PAGCOR data showed that the sector's gross gaming revenues (GGR) stood at P214.75 billion from January to June 2025, up 26% from P171 billion year-on-year. The electronic gaming sector—composed of e-games, e-bingo, and bingo grantees–outpaced traditional or brick-and-mortar gaming with P114.83 billion in gross revenues or 53.47% of total GGR. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

PH, UAE to ink free trade deal — embassy
The United Arab Emirates said Tuesday it is set to sign a free trade deal with the Philippines that would expand economic cooperation, boost investment flows and open collaboration in key areas, such as labor, agriculture and financial services. UAE officials in Manila called the soon-to-be signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which seeks to remove trade barriers and create more opportunities for professionals and service providers, an important milestone in its relations with the Philippines as it coincides with the 51st anniversary of their diplomatic relations. "Over the past three years, both nations have signed approximately 22 agreements focusing on culture, energy transition, legal cooperation, government modernization, and security. The signing CEPA, expected in the coming week, will further boost trade and investment," UAE ambassador Mohamed Alqataam Alzaabi said in a statement. The UAE is the Philippines' top export market among Arab and African countries and its 17th largest globally. It is expected to increase the UAE's gross domestic product (GDP) by $2.4 billion and increase exports to the Philippines to $7.62 billion by 2032. Alzaabi said bilateral ties between UAE and the Philippines have strengthened across trade, development, culture, and people-to-people exchanges in recent years. "Today, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of the Philippines proudly mark the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations, celebrating over five decades of friendship, cooperation, and shared progress," the envoy said, citing the meeting in November 2024 of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and ruler of Dubai. "As the UAE and the Philipines celebrate 51 years of enduring friendship, both countries reaffirm their commitment to advancing cooperation, fostering innovation, and promoting shared prosperity for generations to come," the envoy said. The UAE has committed $20 million to rehabilitate Pasig River and signed a $15-billion agreement with Manila to develop renewable energy projects, envisioned to deliver up to 10 gigawatts of clean power by 2030. UAE is also home to more than one million Filipinos, whose contributions, Alzaabi said, "enrich every sector of society." The UAE, he added, "remains committed to safeguarding their welfare and strengthening the bonds between the two nations." — VDV, GMA Integrated News
