Gill, 25, led a young side on the tough tour after three Test stalwarts -- Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashiwn -- quit the longest format in quick succession, leaving a vacuum in the side.
"There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy (Gill) became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It's just unbelievable that when you're given responsibility, how you take it," Yuvraj told ICC Digital on the sidelines of the '50 Days To Go' Women's Cricket World Cup event.
"So, very proud of them (Indian team). I certainly feel it's a win for us, although it's a drawn series, because it's a young team. And it's not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself."
Despite being hit by injuries to wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, and their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah playing only three games to manage his workload, India's determination was on show as they pulled off a thrilling six-run win in the fifth Test at Oval to level the series.
Yuvraj, who has mentored Gill, added that the Indian team took on the challenge head on even without the likes of Kohli and Rohit.
"It's just fantastic because I felt when you have a young team going to England, it's a lot of pressure. You're filling the boots of somebody like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, it's not easy. The guys took it head-on." He also praised the efforts of all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, whose marathon partnership helped India draw the fourth Test in Manchester.
"The moment in the tournament was when India drew the Test series. I've never seen, in a very long time, Washington and Jadeja got hundreds and drew a Test match," he said.
"That speaks volumes. Obviously Jadeja has been there for a long time. But I think Washington Sundar, as a youngster coming into the team, it was incredible to do what he did," added Yuvraj.

Sehwag added that Sachin Tendulkar 's advice helped him reinstate the belief and later shine for India again. "In 2007-08 series when we were in Australia, I played the first three matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can't be a part of the playing XI, then there was no point in my playing ODI cricket," said Sehwag on Padamjeet Sehrawat 's YouTube channel. "Then I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No, I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. So, you are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don't make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call.' When that series ended, I played in the next series and made a lot of runs. I played the 2011 World Cup and we won the World Cup as well". Sehwag made his ODI debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1999 and played his first Test against South Africa in 2001. He is the only Indian batter to have scored two triple centuries in Test cricket. The right-handed batter also has a double century to his name in the ODI format. He scored 219 runs against the West Indies in 2011. Sehwag represented the country in 104 Tests, scoring 8586 runs at an average of 49.34. He hit 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries in the longest format of the game. Sehwag was also adjudged ICC Test player of the year in 2010 as he scored 1282 runs in 10 Test matches, including six centuries. In 251 ODIs, Sehwag scored 8273 runs at a strike-rate of over 104. The former opener smashed 15 hundreds and 38 half-centuries. Sehwag was also part of 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup winning teams.

In a chat with former cricketer Padamjeet Sehrawat on YouTube, Ishant recalled a moment from the 2015 Vijay Hazare Trophy final: a spell from Bumrah that left such an impression, it may have quietly accelerated his entry into the Indian team. Ishant was part of Delhi's team in the final against Gujarat, where Bumrah picked a five-wicket haul in his side's massive 139-run win to clinch the title. Ishant revealed that Bumrah, at the time, didn't have the same action as he does today, but was very effective regardless. 'I remember we were playing the List A match, I think it was in 2016 (2015). We were playing the final in Bengaluru, Delhi vs Gujarat. Uss time vo bhaagta tha, properly bhaagte hue bowling karta tha. Abhi jaisa (slow) nahi (At that time, he used to have a proper fast bowler's run-up, not like how he does it today). He picked five wickets in that game,' Ishant said as he narrated the story. 'After that, we went to Australia. I told Ravi bhai, 'If we need anyone in this team, it's Jasprit Bumrah'. I told him about Bumrah's action and his bowling. Ravi bhai was the mentor of the team. And look at his luck... someone got injured, and Bumrah came into the team. From there till now, his mindset and self-belief makes him stand out,' Ishant said. Bumrah's ODI debut Bumrah made his debut after Bhuvneshwar Kumar suffered an injury before the final ODI of the series. He enjoyed an impressive outing in the game, registering figures of 2/40 in 10 overs and helping India clinch a six-wicket win; the side's only win of the five-match series. Bumrah wasn't initially part of the ODI squad, but was drafted in as a late replacement for Bhuvneshwar's injury. Ishant was also part of the playing XI in the ODI.
