‘Karnataka's aluminium extrusion industry hit by global headwinds, including 50% tariff imposed by Trump'

The Hindu9 hours ago
The aluminium extrusion industry in Karnataka is concerned about global headwinds, including volatility in raw material prices, high energy costs, and the recently announced 50% tariff by the U.S administration, according to Jitendra Chopra, President, Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI).
Aluminium extrusion is a manufacturing process where melted aluminium alloy is forced through a die to make hard aluminium in various sizes, shapes and lengths for the consumption of diverse industries.
Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on August 18, Mr. Chopra said, 'Karnataka, being a strategic location, has emerged as a key growth engine of India's aluminium extrusion industry with an individual production contribution of over 10%, thanks to its rapid industrial growth, strong export potential and a thriving manufacturing base. However global headwinds were impacting the prospects of the sector and industry players here are worried that these would impact the export competitiveness of the sector.'
According to him, other than the tariff burden, what is hurting the industry is under-utilization of domestic manufacturing capacity due to cheap imports.
'The high tariffs by the U.S are a challenge, but a bigger challenge is the under-utilisation of domestic manufacturing capacity due to cheap imports. The total installed aluminium extrusion capacity in India is 3.5 million tonnes per annum, but the utilisation is only around 2 million tonnes, with the remaining 1.5 million tonnes imported,' he said.
He also cited a need to put in place safeguards in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Far East countries and other nations to revive domestic units.
Mr. Chopra said aluminium extrusion is a fast-growing sector in Karnataka. While Bengaluru-based Jindal Aluminium Limited (JAL) remains India's largest aluminium extrusion company, Hindalco and Bhoruka Group also have manufacturing facilities in the City.. Moreover, there are hundreds of MSMEs and small-sized aluminium extrusion manufacturing facilities catering to construction, electric mobility, aerospace, renewable energy, and consumer durables.
The push from government-led initiatives, like the Smart Cities Mission, affordable housing schemes, and clean energy programmes, is fuelling sustained growth in aluminium extrusion output and consumption, he stated adding, 'Karnataka is rapidly becoming a hub for aluminium extrusion with its unique advantages of manufacturing strength, technology, and export potential. The State plays a critical role in meeting India's domestic demand as well as exports, and holds immense strategic value for the industry.''
India's aluminium extrusion market stood at $3.51 billion in 2024, and is projected to reach $4.61 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.5%. While north India remains the dominant market, growth in the southern region is led Karnataka, according to ALEMAI, that represents over 200 industry players.
Karnataka accounts for over 10% of India's total production of 1,079,875 metric tons. Jindal is a major contributor, producing approximately 12,000 tonnes per month.
The industry body in association with Hindalco, Vedanta, JNARDDC, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Mines, and the Ministry of MSMEs, is scheduled to hold a four-day aluminium extrusion exposition, ALUMEX India 2025, in New Delhi between September 10 and 13.
ALUMEX India 2025 will address challenges facing the aluminium extrusion sector through sessions on technology localisation, green extrusion practices, government support for MSMEs, and emerging global trends. It will facilitate innovation and the adoption of sustainable practices, in addition to business matchmaking and buyer-seller meets, to enable strategic partnerships and drive investment across the value chain.

Mumbai Police files charge sheet against ex-Religare chair Rashmi Saluja, 3 others in ESOP case

Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police on Monday filed a charge sheet against former Religare Enterprises chairperson Rashmi Saluja and three others in connection with alleged irregularities in the allotment of employee stock options (ESOP) at Care Health Insurance Ltd . A dispute over the ESOP allotment to Saluja at the insurance subsidiary had escalated into a legal battle between Religare's then management and the Burmans who were pursuing to take over the financial services company. The charge sheet filed at a local magistrate's court names Saluja, former Religare finance chief Nitin Aggarwal, ex-group general counsel Nishant Singhal and a Mumbai-based office assistant, Vaibhav Gawli. The EOW investigated the matter after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September last year filed a complaint alleging that Saluja and her colleagues conspired to derail the takeover bid for Religare by misusing ESOP allotments and orchestrating a police complaint filed by the office assistant. Gawli was allegedly promised cash and shares in return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Saluja, who has challenged the EOW's FIR in the Bombay HC, on Monday called the allegations "mala fide and flawed". She told ET: "When I have never met Gawli or ever communicated with him, how could I get him to lodge a complaint against the Burmans? Also, how could ESOPs be treated as proceeds of crime? They were issued by the board and NRC (nomination & remuneration committee)...why aren't they being questioned?" According to investigators, the insurance regulator had rejected Care Health's proposal to issue 22.71 million stock options, valued at more than ₹250 crore, to Saluja. Still, the company's board in August 2022 granted the ESOPs to her at ₹45.32 per share, to be vested in three tranches. In the same meeting, the board also cleared a ₹300 crore rights issue. Hair treatment fails, Ghaziabad parlour told to refund Rs 22,000

Ghaziabad: The district consumer disputes redressal commission (DCDRC) on Aug 13 directed N Beauty Bar, a Kavinagar-based beauty parlour, to refund Rs 22,000 to a customer for a hair removal treatment that failed to deliver results. President DCDRC Praveen Kumar Jain and member RP Singh ruled that the parlour, through its manager, should return the entire sum taken for the service within 45 days and also pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 for the mental agony and litigation cost. An interest rate of 6% PA will be levied in case of delay in payment. Lohia Nagar resident Jaivik Goyal approached the commission on April 4, 2024, with a complaint against the parlour from where she booked a package for hair removal laser services, scheduled in eight sittings. According to the dermatologist, I should have got results within 3-4 weeks, but the package did not work as desired," she said. The commission issued notice to the manager of N Beauty Bar and an opportunity to appear in person or through a counsel, but in the absence of any response, heard the matter ex-parte. Referring to the documents on record, the commission ruled that since the customer was not provided with services that could produce desired results as per the claim of the beauty and personal care centre, it amounted to a deficiency in services. "Under the Consumer Protection Act, the service provider is liable to be charged with a penalty for deficiency of service and should also return the money charged from the customer," the commission ruled.
