Keely Hodgkinson to compete at Alexis Ohanian's Athlos NYC meet in October

Glasgow Timesa day ago
Athlos, a project backed by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian's venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, premiered at Icahn Stadium last September and returns to the same venue on October 10, just under three weeks after the World Athletics Championships wrap up in Tokyo.
Hodgkinson has been recovering from a hamstring issue, and recently withdrew from Saturday's London Diamond League meet – the second delayed start to her season – but her team said the 23-year-old still aims to arrive in Japan in 'peak form'.

'Athlos NYC represents everything I love about our sport: unity, passion, and the pursuit of greatness,' Hodgkinson said. 'I can't wait to line up alongside some of the best in the world to cap off the season.'
Athlos' inaugural edition paid out more than USD 600,000 – the largest-ever purse for a women's track event – with winners taking home USD 60,000 (£44,603), and also featured a give-back initiative in which 10 per cent of ticketing, commercial sponsorship and broadcast revenues were re-distributed to participating athletes.
Last year's event had a purposeful festival feel, featuring a performance from rapper and songwriter Megan Thee Stallion. Unlike the track-only inaugural competition, Athlos' second iteration will also include a field event, long jump, headlined by American Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall.
British 400m record holder Amber Anning, who collected a pair of relay bronzes at the Paris 2024 Olympics and the individual world 400m indoors title in March, has also signed up.

In 2026, Athlos plans to shift from an individual-centred event to a team-based league format.
Ohanian, who is married to 23-time tennis grand slam singles champion Serena Williams, announced in May that he had bought a stake in Women's Super League side Chelsea – reportedly 10 per cent and worth around £20million.
He has also joined the board of the club, telling the BBC he thinks Chelsea's 'queens of global soccer' could become a 'billion-dollar franchise'.
He wrote on X: 'I've bet big on women's sports before – and I'm doing it again.'

Juan Mata reveals family urged him to LEAVE Man United after Jose Mourinho's appointment, fearing a repeat of Chelsea fallout

Juan Mata has revealed that his family urged him to leave Manchester United following the appointment of Jose Mourinho. The Spaniard joined the Red Devils from Chelsea in January 2014 for a then-club record fee of £37.1million. He had spent two-and-a-half seasons in west London and won the Champions League FA Cup and Europa League. Mata was forced out of Chelsea after falling out of favour under Mourinho, and joined United in pursuit of more playing time. However, after playing under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal at United, Mourinho was appointed in 2016 - leaving doubts over Mata's place in the side. The midfielder has revealed that his grandad advised him to leave the club as he was concerned the Portuguese boss would freeze him out again. Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Mata said: 'The first call that I received was from my family and from my granddad saying, "You have to leave. What's going to happen?" And I said, "No, I'm going to see how it goes. I don't have any problem with him, and he doesn't have any problems with me." 'It is one of the things that I'm most proud of in my career is to have remained, to be calm and say, "No, I'm going to try to show that I can play in his style." And I did so. Our relationship was very natural. Actually, we have a good relationship. 'I played games and we won things together. I played in all the finals, so I felt like an important player in his squad. My family told me, 'Okay, you were right,' but they were panicking a little bit.' Mata ultimately decided to disregard the advice from his grandad and remain, determined to fight for his place in the team. He played 285 times for the club over eight years, winning the Europa League, FA Cup and League cup. Mata departed United in June 2022 and later that year signed for Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray as a free agent. In 2023, he had a short stint with Japanese side Vissel Kobe, making just a single appearance for the team. The 37-year-old is currently playing for Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers, having signed with the club in September 2024.

I want to give my baby vintage name that's set for a comeback, people say it reminds them of vomit but I think it's cute

You want to make sure you choose something unique that friends and family haven't already used, but not so out there that your child gets picked on. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 A mum was told he vintage baby name reminded people of vomit (stock image) Credit: Alamy Some people opt to name their child after a beloved relative, whilst others take inspiration from a favourite book, movie or celebrity. Your baby is stuck with this decision for life, so it's important you get it right. And one mum has been left gutted after people admitted her dream baby name reminds them of vomit. Taking to Reddit, she asked for advice about the vintage moniker she's considering for her future tot. She wrote: "Ralph - vintage cutie? Or the guy from The Simpsons? "My husband and I love to chat future baby names and there is one name I just can't get out of my heart which is Ralph (Ralphie/Alfie as nicknames). "My husband likes it too, but people seem to have negative associations [with] it. However, I feel like it fits right in [with] the Arthur's, Franklins, Henrys, etc that are so beloved. "What do you think? Is Ralph fit for a comeback?" In Scotland, 16 baby boys were called Ralph last year - which could suggest a small demand for the vintage moniker. But the mum was immediately innundated with comments from social media users who pointed out that Ralph is slang for being sick. Mum accused of 'child abuse' after showing off 'giant' 4-month-old baby whose size is 'off the charts' Others, meanwhile, joked that it reminded them of the nickname for a penis. One said: "Ralph is slang for throwing up or the nickname for someone's penis in Judy Blume's Forever. "I don't think it has the vintage charm of Arthur, Franklin, Henry, Theodore, Calvin, etc." A second echoed: "I don't like it. It makes me think of throwing up. The only Ralph I met went by Tiger." A third pleaded: "I'd go with Raphael, or with another vintage name. I can't think of Ralph without thinking of Judy Blume's 'Forever', where the boyfriend named his penis Ralph." 2 The mum feared the name Ralph would just remind people of The Simpsons Credit: Alamy Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: "I think it's cute, but it does seem to be the weird kid's name in a few cartoons. It's also a nn for throwing up, but that might be dated. "Really I think only parents and older people have associations with it. His classmates most likely will not." It comes after another mum revealed the reason for her baby's unique name and was immediately humbled as people pointed out her embarrassing mistake. The moniker ended up raising eyebrows for all the wrong reasons thanks to its reverse 'meaning'. So what's the name, you might ask. It's Heaven, but with a twist - namely that it is spelt backwards, and incorrectly as Neveah. To correctly nail the angelic name, the correct spelling should be 'Nevaeh'. And some social media users have been left stunned by the name blunder as one questioned: "How do I rename somebody else's child?" Someone else fumed: "If you aren't responsible enough to name a kid, you shouldn't have a kid!" But a third person did admit: "Omfg i just realised it's not if it's spelled like that… i feel so dumb LMAO." Banned baby names in the UK The UK has no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numerals, misleading titles, or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.
