The Golden State Warriors aren't wasting any time fixing what broke them last season. After a playoff exit that exposed their lack of wing depth and defense, they've locked onto two names—Herb Jones and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
One brings elite perimeter defense, the other sharpshooting and versatility. With Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler still in win-now mode, the front office is pushing hard to reload before the window closes.

impact and elite wing defense
Herb Jones, who was named to the 2024 All-Defensive First Team, put up averages of 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 steals over just 20 games with the New Orleans Pelicans before his season was cut short by knee surgery.
Jones offers top-notch perimeter defense and athletic versatility qualities that were notably absent when Stephen Curry got injured in Game 1 against the Lakers during the Western Conference semifinals.
The Pelicans might consider a trade due to their roster requirements and salary cap situation, but Golden State would probably have to include some young players, possibly even Jonathan Kuminga in a sign-and-trade deal.

Standing at six-foot-five, Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a two-way guard who put up an average of 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists with a shooting percentage of 43.8% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc during his last season with Minnesota. Now an unrestricted free agent, he's attracting attention from teams like Detroit and Atlanta.
His skills in perimeter defense and off-ball shooting fit seamlessly into the Warriors' game plan, providing Curry and Butler with essential spacing and depth in the guard position.
There are reports indicating he might be able to secure a deal worth more than the mid-level exception — but Golden State has the financial flexibility and roster space to make it happen.
Golden State ended the last regular season with a 48–34 record and exited in the second round, which pointed out their need for more size, athleticism, and perimeter defense. Despite bringing in Jimmy Butler and going on a 23–7 run to make the playoffs, injuries to Curry and depth issues caused problems down the line.
The front office is now making a strong effort to address these weaknesses—especially on the wings, where they faced the most matchup challenges.
Provides top-notch defense but needs resources and a trading partner ready to take on contracts. It's easier and faster—he's a free agent without restrictions. Golden State can make a solid mid-level offer. While Detroit and Atlanta are potential buyers, the Warriors stand out as an attractive destination for contenders.

The way Golden State is reshaping their wings combines a fierce approach with sensible choices. Targeting Herb Jones might lock in a strong defense, assuming the trade isn't overly expensive, while bringing in Nickeil Alexander-Walker would provide quick shooting and adaptability on both offense and defense.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 15 off the bench, while veteran Tina Charles was the only starter in double figures with 13. Shakira Austin chipped in 12, and Jade Melbourne marked her 100th career game with a sharp start, scoring eight first-half points. Live Events — WNBA (@WNBA) The game swung in Connecticut's favor with a 9-0 run to close the second quarter, extending into a 13-0 surge early in the third that stretched their lead to 51-35. Washington clawed back within six after a Citron three, but late buckets from Nelson-Ododa and Leila Lacan steadied the Sun. Former Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards , acquired in a recent trade, scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds for Connecticut against her old team. Despite the Mystics' push, the Sun preserved their double-digit cushion and matched Washington in the fourth quarter to seal a rare and morale-boosting road win.

Nagpur paddlers' poorest of poor show at home

1 2 Nagpur: City paddlers registered a new low in the 3rd Maharashtra State Ranking table tennis tournament, which concluded at Subhedar Hall on Tuesday. Of the 24 quarterfinal matches played in three age categories in both the boys' and girls' sections on the concluding day, not a single Nagpur player was able to reach the last eight stage of the tournament organised by the Nagpur District Table Tennis Association (NDTTA). While players from Parbhani and Solapur clinched gold medals, Nagpur players' poor display is a matter of concern for NDTTA and local coaches. Of six final matches in both the boys' and girls' sections in the U-11, U-13, and U-15 age categories, players from Parbhani, Solapur, Nashik, Mumbai, Pune, and Thane clinched a gold medal each. In the U-11 girls' final, Parbhani's top seed Aadya Baheti prevailed over Kolhapur's Samrudhi Manvekar 11-4, 11-2, 12-10, as Solapur's Rajvardhan Tiwari drubbed Mumbai's Avyaan Singh Walia 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 to emerge as the new boys' champion. In contrast, the U-13 girls' final was an exciting affair where Nashik's top seed Keshika Purkar had to sweat hard to get the better of Thane's Dnyanashree Tarde 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10. In an all-Mumbai Suburban (TST) boys' title clash, Raghav Mahajan outplayed Aakarshan Yadav 11-4, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9. The U-15 finals in both categories were lop-sided affairs. In the girls' title clash, Pune's sixth-seeded Naisha Rewaskar stunned top seed Sanvi Puranik of Thane 11-7, 11-4, 11-2. In the boys' section, Thane's top seed Nilay Pattekar prevailed over compatriot Ekansh Madane 14-12, 11-0, 11-7. Cubs slugger Kyle Tucker gets some rest as he tries to break out of a prolonged slump

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Tucker is trying to break out of a prolonged slump, and the Chicago Cubs are doing whatever they can to help the All-Star outfielder. HT Image Nothing is working at the moment. Tucker was out of the starting lineup for the opener of a split doubleheader against Milwaukee on Tuesday. He is batting .148 (8 for 54) in August, and he has just two extra-base hits — both doubles — in his last 24 games. A day after manager Craig Counsell said they were 'going to have to take a little step back' with Tucker and give him some days off to reset, the plan for the slugger seemed unclear. Tucker said he might get into the doubleheader opener at some point, and Counsell left open the possibility of him playing on Tuesday. 'We talked Sunday night a little bit and, you know, we put a lot on the table and then we'll see where that goes,' Counsell said. Tucker has some company. Going into Tuesday's action, the Cubs were averaging 3.6 runs per game since the All-Star break, compared with 5.3 in the first part of the season. The slumping offense has played a role in Chicago falling nine games behind surging Milwaukee in the NL Central. The 28-year-old Tucker jammed his right ring finger during an awkward slide in a victory over Cincinnati on June 1. He missed one game and then made a pinch-hitting appearance before returning to the starting lineup on June 5. 'I'm fine,' Tucker said Tuesday. 'I mean, I've played, you know, for the most part every game this year. So I'm fine going out there.' Tucker was acquired in a trade with Houston in December. He is eligible for free agency after this season, but he said that isn't a factor in his trouble at the plate. He got off to a terrific start in his first season with Chicago, batting .290 with 17 homers, 52 RBIs and a .923 OPS in his first 85 games. He made the All-Star Game for the fourth time. But he hasn't been the same player since the break, hitting .182 (16 for 88) with one homer, six RBIs and a .572 OPS in his last 26 games. Asked if he could recall a similar slump at the plate, Tucker responded: 'Probably not this long.' 'But, I mean I think everyone's had stretches where they have, you know, not done that great or whatever,' he continued. 'I don't know. I'm just trying to figure it out.' While Tucker is known for his reserved, steady demeanor, there are signs that the slump is taking a toll on him. He was slow getting out of the box on a grounder that was momentarily bobbled by Milwaukee first baseman Andrew Vaughn in the fourth inning of Monday's 7-0 loss to the Brewers. He had a similar moment in the sixth inning of Sunday's 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh, leading to some boos from the crowd at Wrigley Field. 'I mean it's kind of exhausting. I don't know how many times I've rolled over to first or second,' Tucker said. 'Regardless you still got to run down the line whether you're out by 50 feet or not. But I mean it's just a little tough right now.' While explaining what Tucker is working on at the plate, Counsell pointed to his first at-bat of Sunday's game against Pittsburgh, when the slugger bounced to first on a 3-1 fastball right over the plate. 'There's separation from what he wants and what's happening, what he thinks he feels and what's happening,' Counsell said. 'And you just, you try to just keep working on that and it's a little thing that puts it back in place. It's probably a simple thing that puts it back in place. It's a swing, doesn't have to be like a successful swing even. Could be a foul ball that puts it back in place.' ___ AP MLB:
