AI mission crosses 34K GPU capacity, 3 new startups to help develop models

India has added 15,916 graphics processing units (GPUs) to its national artificial intelligence infrastructure while selecting three new startups to develop indigenous AI models, the government announced on Friday, accelerating efforts to build sovereign AI capabilities that developers can tap into.
According to Union minister for electronics and information technology (Meity) Ashwini Vaishnaw, who made the announcement at an event in Delhi, seven companies will provide the additional GPU capacity — which takes the total in the IndiaAI compute portal to 34,333 units ——at subsidised rates of ₹67 per hour, substantially below the average market rate of ₹115 per GPU hour.
'When we began the India AI mission, we had an initial target of 10,000 GPUs, which we at the time thought would be a lot,' Vaishnaw said. 'But we got a promising response from the industry.'
The government has already empanelled 18,417 GPUs in the first tranche, with 14,000 units currently accessible through the IndiaAI compute portal that became operational in March.
Vaishnaw announced a third round of GPU empanelment will be completed soon, suggesting continued expansion beyond the original targets.
The IndiaAI mission centres on offering AI technology access through government-subsidised infrastructure, including a marketplace of sorts for access to compute (which typically requires expensive hardware) and government databases.
Among these efforts is the development of indigenous large language models, the technology that underpins AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.
The three startups that were chosen from 506 proposals will develop LLMs optimised for India's 22 major languages and hundreds of dialects.
The new startups join Sarvam AI, which was chosen in April to build a 120 billion parameter model, in developing indigenous AI systems trained on Indian datasets.
The government has loaded 367 datasets onto AI Kosha, a platform supporting AI research across India.
Soket AI will develop a 120-billion parameter open-source model optimised for Indian languages, targeting defence, healthcare and education applications. CEO Abhishek Upperwala set a one-year delivery timeline, saying 'India needs a strong base model that others can build on.'
Gnani AI is building a 14-billion parameter voice system for real-time, multilingual speech processing.
Gan AI focuses on text-to-speech technology with a 70-billion parameter multilingual model targeting 'superhuman' capabilities.
The expansion, coupled with the hardware aspect, represents a dramatic scaling from the programme's original ambitions. 'When we began the India AI mission, we had an initial target of 10,000 GPUs, which we at the time thought would be a lot,' Vaishnaw said. 'But we got a promising response from the industry.'
The government has already empanelled 18,417 GPUs in the first tranche, with 14,000 units currently accessible through the IndiaAI compute portal that became operational in March 2025.
'Common compute is a very important part of the principle of democratising technology,' Vaishnaw said. 'Technology should not be left in the hands of a few.'
Rather than building government data centres, officials opted to empanel private providers who invest in the infrastructure while receiving 40% subsidies. The strategy yielded bids already more than 40% below prevailing market rates before the additional subsidy was applied.
'The government thought building data centres was going to take longer, so they decided to empanel service providers and private sector players who will invest in the compute infrastructure,' a senior official told HT.
The subsidised pricing represents a significant departure from international GPU markets, where Nvidia H100 hourly rates range from $2.99 to $9.98 across major cloud providers in 2025, according to estimates.
The seven newly empanelled companies are Cyfuture India, Ishan Infotech, Locuz Enterprise Solutions, Netmagic IT Services, Sify Digital Services, Vensysco Technologies, and Yotta Data Services. Cyfuture emerged as the dominant supplier, offering multiple chip types including Nvidia's H100 and AMD's MI300X processors, while Yotta Data Services provides access to Nvidia's latest B200 chips.

Illegal gambling platforms putting minors and youth at risk: Report

A new report on Sunday raised serious concerns about the growing threat of illegal online gambling platforms in India, especially to vulnerable groups like minors and young adults. The report by public policy think tank CUTS International warns that these platforms are not only targeting impressionable users with addictive, high-risk games but are also bypassing basic safety checks, such as age verification and identity confirmation. It highlights that the scale of the problem is massive. Between April 2024 and March 2025, there were more than 5.4 billion visits to the top 15 illegal gambling platforms, spread across 40 mirror websites. Some platforms like Parimatch, 1xBet, Stake, Fairplay, and BateryBet are among the most visited. In fact, Parimatch's web traffic in March 2025 was higher than popular platforms like Google India, Amazon, Wikipedia, and Hotstar, revealing the alarming reach of these operations. CUTS International estimates that users are depositing close to $100 billion annually into these illegal betting platforms. Many of these platforms are based overseas and use loopholes in India's payment systems and advertising networks to operate freely, posing a major risk to both consumer safety and national security. Pradeep Mehta, Founder and Secretary General of CUTS International, said that illegal gambling operators are exploiting India's digital infrastructure while evading any form of accountability. "This presents a major national security threat and also exposes Indian consumers to serious harm," Mehta said at the report's release. One of the most disturbing findings of the report is how easily minors can access these gambling sites. These platforms often avoid even the most basic checks like KYC (Know Your Customer) or age verification. Some even offer cash-on-delivery payment options, allowing teenagers with no access to digital wallets or cards to gamble repeatedly without any supervision. The use of high-stakes, psychologically addictive game designs makes them even more dangerous for young, sensation-seeking users. The report also reveals how these platforms attract such massive traffic. Around 66 per cent of users visit directly, often through saved links, private messages, or bookmarks, giving a false impression of trust and legitimacy. Big media campaigns, celebrity endorsements, billboards, and SEO-boosted search visibility further increase their reach.

RBI expected to deliver 3rd consecutive rate cut of 25 bps on Friday, say experts

The Reserve Bank is likely to go for a third consecutive rate cut of 25 basis points on Friday as inflation continues to remain below the median target of 4 per cent, to push growth amid continued global uncertainty triggered by the US tariff moves. Reserve Bank's rate-setting panel Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will start deliberations on the next bi-monthly monetary policy on June 4 and announce the decision on June 6 (Friday). The RBI reduced the key interest rate (repo) by 25 bps each in February and April bringing it to 6 per cent. Six-member MPC headed by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra also decided to change the stance from neutral to accommodative in its April policy. "We do believe that given the rather benign inflation conditions and the liquidity situation which has been made very comfortable through various measures of the RBI, the MPC would go in for a 25 bps cut in the repo rate on the (June) 6th. The commentary on both growth and inflation will be important as there are expectations of revisions in their forecasts for both the parameters," said Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda . Live Events He also expects that the RBI will detail its analysis on how the global environment would be affecting the Indian economy considering that the tariff reprieve provided by the US would end in July. Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA said with CPI inflation forecast to trail 4 per cent for a large part of this fiscal, monetary easing by the MPC is likely to continue. "A 25 bps rate cut is expected next week, followed by two more cuts over the subsequent two policy reviews, taking the repo rate to 5.25 per cent by the end of the cycle," she said. In its annual report released on Thursday, the RBI said monetary policy is committed towards achieving durable price stability, which is a necessary prerequisite for high growth on a sustained basis. The Reserve Bank also said it will undertake liquidity management operations in sync with the monetary policy stance and keep system liquidity adequate to meet the needs of the productive sectors of the economy. The government has mandated the central bank to ensure Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side. Secretary General of industry body Assocham, Manish Singhal too believes that with inflation hitting multi-year lows and expectations remaining benign, there is room for monetary easing and 25 basis points reduction in the repo rate in the upcoming policy. "Though the INR is likely to come under depreciation pressure in the short term, especially if global interest rates (e.g. in the US) remain elevate, its impact will depend on the changes in global risk appetite, crude oil prices and the Fed's own monetary stance. We emphasize the importance of strategic patience over aggressive easing, given the current environment of steady growth and manageable inflation," Singhal said. Pradeep Aggarwal, Founder and Chairman, Signature Global believes that the Reserve Bank of India is once again expected to offer major relief to homebuyers in its upcoming MPC meeting by reducing the repo rate by 25 basis points, driven by easing inflation and a stable economic outlook. "Given that several scheduled commercial banks have been reducing their lending rates following the previous two RBI MPC outcomes, another rate cut at this juncture would act as a catalyst for increased housing demand across segments. As a result, both first-time homebuyers and investors are likely to be encouraged to enter the real estate market, further strengthening demand across the sector," Aggarwal said. According to an article published in the RBI's May Bulletin, domestic bond yields steadily declined to multi-year lows, aided by back-to-back policy rate cuts in February and April 2025 and the liquidity measures that augmented durable liquidity. The overall monetary and credit conditions are evolving in sync with the Reserve Bank's extant monetary policy stance of ensuring that inflation progressively aligns with the target, while supporting growth. India's GDP growth has been estimated to have slowed to four-year low of 6.5 per cent during fiscal 2024-25. Retail inflation in April 2025 was at 3.16 per cent, the lowest year-on-year inflation after July 2019.

'Don't see as competition': VinFast Asia CEO on rivaling Tesla with premium EV launch plans in India

VinFast, the electric vehicle arm of Vietnam's Vingroup, is preparing a bold entry into the Indian market- setting the stage for direct competition with Tesla. With bookings for its vehicles scheduled to open this month, VinFast is banking on its VF7 and VF6 models to establish itself as a premium EV brand in one of the world's fastest-growing auto markets. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia and Vietnam's former ambassador to India, confirmed that the company aims to launch its vehicles ahead of the upcoming festive season. "We have our products in 16 countries, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the US… and VinFast will come to India with an entire ecosystem. Our first target is to position ourselves as the premium EV car in India through the VF7 and VF6, which we plan to roll out in the country by the festival season this year," said Chau, as quoted by news agency PTI. Though Tesla is widely expected to enter the Indian market with fanfare, Chau downplayed notions of rivalry. 'We don't see Tesla, or even BYD for that matter, as competition. Our mission is green mobility. Anyone who shares that dream will be our friend,' he said. Still, VinFast's plans clearly signal its intent to compete in the same space Tesla is eyeing- affluent urban buyers willing to pay a premium for electric innovation. "In Vietnam, we are the biggest selling car company, the largest charger and taxi service provider. We have done everything in Vietnam, and this is the time for us to go global. We wanted to enter India as it is a growing, dynamic automobile market," Chau announced talking about expanding in India. VinFast has already invested $500 million in its new manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with a total outlay of $2 billion committed by 2030. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The plant, completed in just 15 months with strong state and central government support, will serve both the Indian market and export destinations in the Middle East and Africa. Initial production capacity is pegged at 50,000 units annually, with a ramp-up to 150,000 planned based on demand. To support its launch, VinFast will showcase its models at high-traffic locations such as shopping centres and airports before bookings open. The VF7 and VF6, currently manufactured in Vietnam, will be imported initially, though localisation is central to the company's long-term strategy. 'Localisation will help with government incentives, reduce costs, and make us more competitive,' Chau also said, adding that the company does not currently benefit from duty exemptions in India. Pricing has not yet been finalised, but Chau promised it would be 'affordable' despite the premium positioning. 'India is a sensitive market, and we will have an affordable price,' he said, while stressing the VF7 and VF6 will be 'premium vehicles.' Beyond manufacturing, VinFast is laying the foundation for an EV ecosystem in India. This includes dealer networks, authorised service centres, charging infrastructure, and a used vehicle exchange program. Talks with state governments are underway to establish charging stations, with Chau expressing confidence in attracting support from Indian investors as well. By 2030, VinFast expects to employ up to 3,500 local workers, having already interviewed hundreds of engineering graduates from Tamil Nadu, accordingto Chau's statement to PTI. The company's expansion plan reflects a deep commitment to India, which Chau described as a 'growing, dynamic automobile market.'
