BENGALURU/MANGALURU:
Mohammad Ashraf
, the man lynched in Mangaluru for allegedly shouting pro-Pakistan slogans during a cricket match, had a history of
mental illness
, according to his family. His brother, Abdul Jabbar, said Ashraf had been under treatment for mental health issues, often wandered from place to place, and did odd jobs to survive.
The 40-year-old victim, originally from Pulpalli village in Sultan Bathery taluk of Wayanad district, Kerala, was attacked by a mob near Bhatra Kallurti temple in Kudupu on April 27. The assault left him with severe internal injuries, leading to his death. A postmortem confirmed the cause of death as shock and injuries from the beating.
Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah
, referencing the incident, said that raising slogans in support of Pakistan amounts to 'betrayal of the nation and constitutes treason.' He added that an investigation is ongoing and action would be taken against the guilty.
However, home minister G Parameshwara clarified that the claim that Ashraf shouted 'Pakistan Zindabad' was made by those involved in the lynching. He said nearly 20 people have been arrested, and more are likely to be held, as over 30 were reportedly part of the mob. The main accused has been identified as Sachin, an autorickshaw driver, while others include Devadas, Saideep, and Manjunath.

The case marks the first application of Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Karnataka, which prescribes death or life imprisonment for mob lynching.
The lynching has triggered condemnation from various Muslim organisations, who have demanded suo motu action against those who allegedly gave provocative speeches. They also expressed concern over the growing trend of moral policing.
Ashraf's body was sent back to his hometown in Kerala after his identity was confirmed by family members who reached Mangaluru on Tuesday night. City police commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed the victim's identity and said investigations are continuing.

Objectionable photos found in phone of Mathura youth arrested over 'provocative' online post

'Objectionable photos and videos allegedly involving Hindu women have been found in the mobile phone of a Muslim youth arrested for sharing a 'provocative' message on social media on Eid,' police said. They said the youth allegedly lured the women into relationships by pretending to be a Hindu, filmed them in compromising situations and circulated the content online. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar on Wednesday (June 11, 2025) said he has formed a special team to investigate the matter, which has now taken a serious turn following the recovery of digital evidence. According to police, Imran, a resident of Machhi Mandi in the Kotwali area in Mathura and an autorickshaw driver, was taken into custody on Sunday (June 8, 2025) after local Hindu leaders complained about a communal and inflammatory social media post made by him on Eid. Following his arrest, Hindu groups alleged that Imran was involved in "love jihad" — a coinage used by right-wing activists to refer to the alleged campaign of Muslims forcing Hindu girls to convert in the guise of love. 'Based on these allegations, Imran's mobile phone was sent to the cyber headquarters for forensic analysis,' police said. "Initial investigation revealed that he had written on one of his social media display pictures, 'I have more girlfriends than most people's age'. We have also found photos and videos of Hindu women in compromising situations on his mobile phone," SSP Kumar said. He said Imran used fake online identities to trap the women and later shared the obscene material on various platforms. 'Emails have been sent to social media companies requesting dossiers of all of Imran's accounts along with associated URLs,' he said. "Based on phone records, we are trying to identify the victims and encourage them to come forward. Their identities will be kept strictly confidential and if required, counselling will be offered," the SSP said. Imran was allegedly active on multiple platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Police have sought detailed activity logs of the past three years from these companies as part of their investigation.

Census data to be ready within nine months? Govt bets on tech to speed up 2027 exercise

The upcoming Census 2027 could deliver its final population figures by the end of the same year, a significant improvement over previous exercises, thanks to a digital-first approach that will use mobile apps for data collection and intelligent systems for real-time processing. Sources in the government said the time taken to publish detailed population data — including gender-wise breakups at national, state, district and taluk levels — may be compressed to just nine months from the date of enumeration. In the 2011 Census, this process had stretched over nearly two years, according to a ToI report. The government has set March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the next Census. Originally scheduled for 2020, the decadal count was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Daughter thought she had saved 'cute bunnies.' The vet pales when he realizes what they really are Cleverst Mobile apps in 16 languages to power enumeration The 2027 Census will be conducted in two parts — a house-listing phase in 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. For the first time, enumerators will be equipped with a mobile application to capture data digitally, replacing the bulky paper forms of the past. Available in 16 languages, including Hindi, English and 14 regional options, the app is designed to be simple to use for both officials and the public. Citizens will also have the option of self-enumeration , the sources said. Live Events The app-based format will offer dropdown menus, auto-fetching of house records, and the ability to edit entries on the spot — all of which are expected to speed up data collection and reduce manual errors. Data processing to be near-instantaneous With most of the responses pre-coded and digitised, the need for manual compilation of summaries or abstracts will be eliminated. The mobile application will feed directly into back-end systems using Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) tools, which will help process even semi-structured information swiftly. For questions requiring descriptive or non-numeric responses, officials have prepared a code directory to guide enumerators in selecting standardised entries, further cutting down processing time. To support the massive digital operation, the Office of the Registrar General of India has also built a Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, which will help track and coordinate progress across all stages. If the process unfolds as planned, this will be the fastest turnaround yet for a Census in India — and the most technologically advanced.
