Raoul Moat 'completely changed in his twisted final hours' say arresting officers
Fifteen years on from the dramatic moment when Raoul Moat was caught with an illegal sawn-off shotgun in his hands, the two firearms cops who captured him have spoken for the first time about his erratic behaviour and the final hours before he turned the gun on himself on on July 10, 2010.
Moat, 37, had been released from prison days earlier, after serving an 18-week sentence for an assault on his nine-year-old daughter. The former bodybuilder had received the news shortly before his release that his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart - mother of his youngest child - was in a new relationship with Chris Brown, who he was led to believe was an undercover police officer, reports the Mirror.
Upon release, Moat posted a chilling Facebook update that read: "Just got out of jail, I've lost everything, my business, my property and to top it all off my lass of six years has gone off with someone else. I'm not 21 and I can't rebuild my life. Watch and see what happens."
In the days that followed, he used the social media site to taunt Northumbria police, as he played a sick game of cat-and-mouse, following a murderous rampage - which started in the early hours of July 3, 2010, when he stalked Samantha and Chris, a 29-year-old karate instructor, to a home they were visiting.
After crouching under the open window of their living room for 90 minutes, Moat fired through the living room window, hitting Samantha in the stomach and arm. When Chris left the house to confront him, Moat fired fatal shots into his head at close range, before fleeing from the property.
Adam Twigg and Damian Sharp were firearms cops with West Yorkshire Police at the time, and were called on to provide an armed guard for Samantha, as she recovered from surgery in hospital.
Less than 24 hours after his first killing, Moat shot PC David Rathband in the face as the officer sat in his police vehicle. Just 12 minutes before his attack, Moat had called the cops to tell them his intention. He rang back after the shooting to complain the force were 'not taking me seriously' - showing no remorse. He then went on the run, making his way to the town of Rothbury in Northumberland and surviving by eating dead mice as he descended into paranoia.
After a task force of 160 officers, using guidance from wilderness expert Ray Mears, failed to catch Moat for several days, Adam and Damian were put on active searching duty, tasked with finding the shotgun used by the twisted killer. By this point, Moat had left evidence of living rough - including a makeshift campsite in Rothbury, where he'd left a dictaphone containing hours of rants against the police.
Chillingly, Moat also stated his intention to keep murdering, saying on the tape: "For every lie I see in that paper, any paper, I will kill an innocent member of the public.'
'One of the jobs we got was to go and investigate a graveyard where a groundsperson had come across some disturbed earth and had not buried anybody in this particular area for decades. So we got sent up there with a shovel,' recalls Adam. 'Knowing what I know now, I think he'd put his gun there,' says Damian. 'But he'd removed it again before we got there.'
After hours of fruitless digging, the cops made their way to a local bakery, where the owner had promised to hand over any treats that hadn't sold by the end of their shift. 'We're in there with all this kit on, and I'm driving the ARV [armed-response vehicle],' Damian remembers. 'Twiggy's in the passenger seat and I tell him we'll head down the road and turn right, near the river. I take a big bite of a cream bun and all the cream flops down the front of my vest. Just then I look up and there he is, standing with the shotgun in his hand.'
'As I'm looking along the riverbank I clock this elderly couple who are walking backwards,' says Adam. 'They've also spotted Moat, but luckily he's staring into the river and hasn't noticed them, or us approaching him from behind.'
The next few seconds are still crystal-clear in both men's minds. 'He turned around, pointed the gun at us as we're getting out of the car with our G36s [assault rifles used by police], then turned the gun to his ear,' recalls Damian. 'I'm thinking, 'just don't involve the elderly couple', because that's when we would have had to shoot him first.'
Trained to spot tiny details in body language, Adam got the impression the cornered Moat was no longer a threat to them - only to himself. 'I saw he had his thumb inside of the trigger guard,' he explains. 'He couldn't bring his gun to bear without changing his hand position. We started shouting at him to put the weapon down, but he just walked off sideways, holding the gun to his head.'
Over the next six hours, Adam and Damian held Moat at gunpoint as he ranted and raved about his hatred for the police, saying he wished he had 'finished off' the blinded PC Rathband. He also complained bitterly about his family, claiming they'd all disowned him and that he hated them all.
Police negotiators turned up to try to reason with him - and then legendary England footballer Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne even appeared at the scene, offering to bring Moat 'chicken and lager' if he gave himself up. Gazza later admitted he was under the influence and had mistaken Moat for his mate.
As night fell and the hours wore on, Moat's mindset seemed to change. 'The vibe I got from him was that he would never surrender, and as time went on he was getting more desperate,' says Adam. 'Eventually he changed the position of the weapon at the side of his head, at which point two colleagues fired the XRep Taser [a long-range Taser that operates without wires] at him, and then he pulled the trigger and shot himself in the head.'
Moat was subsequently pronounced dead in hospital, the victims of his sick crimes left without justice.
PC Rathband died by suicide 18 months after his life-changing injuries, and his daughter took up the Olympic torch he had planned to carry in the run-up to the 2012 London Games. She ran with it blindfolded in his honour.
The 15-day inquest into Moat's death ruled that he had died by suicide, while an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation found there was no evidence of misconduct by officers, including the two who had fired the new, untested XRep X12 Taser at Moat seconds before his self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In 2023, Moat's daughter Chantelle explained how her father had terrorised her as a child, inflicting cruel punishments on her and beating her pet dog to death outside her bedroom door. "My father has always been a monster. That is all I have ever known him as. When I was young, there was no monster under my bed – he slept next door to me,' she said, adding that the hero-worship of her dad in the years since his death was 'sickening'. We were better off with him dead. I don't mourn him. I mourn the dad I should have had.'

Troubled son of Michelin star chef Marco Pierre White steals £1,500 worth of Jellycat toys
Marco Pierre White Jr has been involved in a spate of burglaries and a decade of trouble. The troubled son of Michelin star chef Marco Pierre White has admitted to smashing up an antique shop after stealing Jellycat toys worth £1,500. Marco Pierre White Jr has been involved in a spate of burglaries and a decade of trouble. As reported by the Mirror, the former reality TV has now held his hands up to the raid in Westminster, London, on June 19. The 30-year-old has struggled with drug addiction - and the latest charge comes after he pleaded guilty to burgling a tattoo shop in Somerset last year. It has been claimed White Jr caused over £40,000 worth of damage to the tattoo shop earlier this summer, an amount he disputes. In court, prosecutor Ravinder Johal said that he destroyed four mounted crystals at the shop. White Jr burgled a deli in Kensington just weeks before, stealing a laptop, iPod, and a till. He smashed his way into a house in Chelsea day later, causing £7,000 of damage to the front door of the property. And he stole £1,500 worth of Jellycat plush toys after breaking into a shop in Barnes, south west London, last month on July 21. He appeared at Isleworth Crown Court, via video link, from HMP Wandsworth today. He admitted four counts of burglary as well as one count of criminal damage. The former reality TV star previously pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court. He entered those pleas again today. Graeme Logan, defending, said: "Marco disputes the £43,000 figure relating to criminal damage. The figure appears to be an amalgamation for property stolen and damage to the property. That figure is disputed. I ask for seven days to submit that plea. With the allegation of robbery on May 25, which Mr White denies, an alternative plea of theft will be offered." Judge Edward Connell said: "There will be a hearing for that robbery charge at Isleworth Crown Court on September 2 this year. If the Crown does not accept it, a trial will be set for March 16 next year. I am going to adjourn your case for two weeks. You have pled guilty to serious offences both in the magistrates' court and today, and at some point you will have to be sentenced for that." The former Celebrity Big Brother star had only been released from prison two months before burglary, and will be sentenced on 29 November after pleading guilty to one count of burglary. His downfall began in 2016, just days after he was voted out of the Celebrity Big Brother house following shocking behaviour with his housemates, which prompted complaints from viewers and a formal warning. In one incident, he asked Laura Carter to 'choke him' as she straddled him on the sofa, and was reprimanded when she later complained to producers about his 'wandering hands'. Days after being the first celebrity to be booted off the show, Marco Jr appeared in court after being stopped by police driving under the influence of cocaine. In January 2019, he was convicted and fined after unleashing a shocking tirade at police officers as they arrested him for being drunk and disorderly in a train station. Seven months later, he was taken to a police station 'kicking and screaming' after smashing windows during a furious row with his chef dad Marco Sr, and in 2022, he was jailed for 18 months after being convicted of 14 offences including racially aggravated abuse, heroin possession and carrying a knife. In May last year, he was arrested after burgling an upscale deli in Bath, and was captured on CCTV smashing the window with a champagne bottle. He stole £250 from the cafe, which was featured on the Netflix show Bridgerton, and was identified by police after his trousers fell down during his escape, revealing his distinctive tattoos on his legs and rear end. The owner of the cafe, Jon Ison, claimed this was the second time Marco Jr had stolen from him, and told The Sun that he also stole money from the charity box that was on the counter next to the till. 'He probably thought he was in the clear but when he crawled back through the window he got his tracksuit caught on the frame and accidentally mooned his bare backside right at our CCTV cameras,' he said. 'The hilarious thing about this burglary is that we only knew it was him because his trousers got caught around his ankles and we could see his tattoos on his bum cheeks,' Jon added. His legal woes didn't end there, as in August, he was sentenced to eight weeks in jail for stealing socks from a supermarket near his dad's four-star hotel The Rudloe near Bath. Marco Jr also burgled The Crown Inn in the picturesque city, and stole £2,000 worth of cigarettes.

Sadistic brute trained dogs to rip apart badgers and cats
John Dysart warned he faces jail after reign of terror resulted in domestic pets being ripped apart by dogs. Pet owners in Alloa warned to keep their cats indoors after a spate of killings A sadistic brute who filmed his dogs ripping apart cats and badgers is facing jail after admitting his heinous crimes. John Dysart trained dogs to 'kill anything that moved' and his crimes horrified all pet owners in the town of Alloa - where puppies and cats were kept indoors in case they were targeted. The musclebound bully was due to be tried at Alloa Sheriff Court but changed his plea at the last minute to guilty for several charges, which revealed the perverse bloodlust. Dysart was brought to justice after a video circulated in Alloa of two dogs ripping a domestic cat to pieces, with locals recognising the dogs as belonging to him. A subsequent raid on Dysart's home `by the SSPCA's Special Investigations Unit, who were tipped off, led to his mobile phone being seized. SIU investigators then found a horror showcase of photos and videos of Dysart's animals killing domestic pets and wild animals. One source said: 'John Dysart is notorious in Alloa for being a thug and a bully. Anyone who owns a wee dog or cat will be breathing a sigh of relief because he looks like being taken out of commission for a while. 'There was a point when people were scared to let their pets get out of their sight in case Dysart's dogs got them and they ended up in a horror video. They killed anything that moved. 'What he did would turn anyone's stomach.' When Dysart, 31, was confronted on social media about the cat murders online he told furious locals that his dogs were impossible to control once the scent of an animal they could kill. The source said: 'The fact is that he trained the dogs to be like that and he made videos that prove he was taking pleasure from seeing pet cats and other animals literally being torn apart by dogs.' Dysart had taken a large bag to his court appearance in the knowledge that a jail term is the only likely outcome for him at a sentencing next month. He admitted that, between February 2022 and March 2024, at 23 Whins Road, Alloa, to keeping three lurcher dogs for animal fights. Dysart also admitted setting his dogs upon cats, allowing them to bite, pull and attack them, killing them. The sadist, who was fully equipped with lamps, spades and other badger baiting equipment, also pled guilty to setting the dogs on a badger, killing or injuring the terrified wild animal. Dysart admitted top glorifying his killing sessions by making videos and publishing them online, where he shared them with other 'urban hunter' sadists. He was also convicted of owning equipment designed or adapted for use at an animal fight, namely high powered lamps, mobile telephones, shovels, a fork, snares and camouflage clothing. On Facebook, Dysart was named and shamed on the Clackmannanshire Lost and Found Animals page, where he was condemned as a 'pathetic excuse of a human being'. The site moderator posted: 'There is a video that he has taken of his two dogs mauling an innocent cat to death. 'That poor cat had no chance and it's not the first time this pathetic excuse of a human being has done this. 'So I'm advising anyone in Alloa that has a cat to keep them inside until this animal abuser is put behind bars.' Ahead of sentencing next month, Sheriff Neil Bowie will watch some of the distressing videos that formed the case of the SSPCA's SIU. A spokesperson for the SSPCA said: 'We welcome these guilty pleas in this deeply distressing case of animal cruelty. 'John Dysart has been remanded in custody and the sheriff made clear that a custodial sentence should be expected. 'This case features some of the most horrific cruelty and we are relieved that justice has been served. 'We hope the court applies the full extent of sentencing available, in recognition of the suffering caused.' The spokesperson added: 'Our priority remains the welfare of animals across Scotland and we will continue to do all we can to bring those who hurt them before the courts.'
