China suffers big jolt in Nepal, Donald Trump's one decision spoils Xi Jinping's plan as...

New Delhi: The Trump administration has decided to continue the Nepal Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), putting an end to months of speculation. The Trump administration's decision is being seen as a major setback for China, which is looking to expand its Belt Road Initiative (BRI) to Nepal. The MCC is a package of development projects in Nepal, which the US launched to counter China's BRI. However, after Donald Trump became president, the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) decided to shut down the MCC as part of a cut in foreign funding. Why did the US decide to continue MCC?
After directing US aid agencies to wind up their work, the State Department began reviewing foreign aid projects and programmes of various agencies, including MCC and USAID. The Kathmandu Post reported in its post that the US government's foreign aid review recommended the continuation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact. A representative of the US Embassy told the Kathmandu Post that the Nepal government has been informed about this decision. What did Nepal say on US' decision on MCC?
Since January, Nepal was confused about how the government would manage the funds if the Trump administration completely withdrew from MCC. The Kathmandu Post quoted a senior Finance Ministry official as saying that this new decision of the USA has brought relief. Although the US side had assured us that the projects would not be affected, we were still looking for alternative resources for projects under MCC. How much money has gone to MCC?
Nepal and MCC signed an agreement in September 2017 for energy and road projects, under which the US would provide assistance of $500 million. Nepal would give $150 million from its side, which was increased to $197 million. In this way, the total investment in the project under MCC has reached $697 million. MCC had decided to put in $50 million to cover the funding shortfall, which could take the amount to over $740 million. How is MCC America's answer to China's BRI?
MCC is considered to be the answer to China's Belt and Road Initiative. Nepal is also a part of China's BRI project. In June this year, the MCC headquarters said that it is effectively countering the BRI. In a resolution presented in the US Congress, MCC said, 'for more than two decades, MCC has invested in partner countries to create new opportunities for American investment, trade and employment, opening up valuable opportunities for American businesses. It has also effectively countered the growing influence of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)'.

Of Trump's mediation claims, and jets lost in Operation Sindoor

After a week of logjam, Parliament saw some business with Lok Sabha kicking off a discussion on Operation Sindoor-Pahalgam terrorist attack. Opening the discussion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held that India's retaliatory measures to the Pahalgam terror attack and the (later) violation of ceasefire were 'swift, proportionate and calculated' to not cause any provocation. He emphasised that, unlike Pakistan, India specifically targeted terrorist camps, and not civil establishments. He also rejected assertions about Operation Sindoor being paused following international mediation, i.e. by U.S. President Donald Trump. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi questioned the government on Pahalgam attack asking - how did terrorists reach the meadow, why government was not releasing details on it, what's the update on nabbing the terrorists, and jets lost during Operation Sindoor. Union MEA S. Jaishankar too asserted that Mr Trump was not involved in the Indo-Pak ceasefire, adding that, on May 9, 2025, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning of a 'massive Pakistani attack' in the next few hours. PM Modi had responded that if such an attack happened, it would be met with an appropriate response. The House discussed the issue till 1 am during which AIMIM MP questioned why Jammu Kashmir L-G was not removed for law and order failure and why India-Pakistan cricket matches were being held in spite of the Pahalgam attack, CPI ML MP Raja Ram Singh questioned Mr. Modi's continued silence on Mr. Trump's attacks. Throughout the discussion, Centre kept mum on the jets lost during Operation Sindoor and the terrorists' entry way into the meadow. In Rajya Sabha, no business was held due to protests over Bihar Special Intensive revision. The discussion on Operation Sindoor will continue in Lok Sabha today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to make concluding remarks. You can follow today's live updates here. Until next time

US market today: Stocks edge higher as Fed meet, China tariff talks weigh; JetBlue, SoFi jump while Merck, UnitedHealth drag

Wall Street inched up on Tuesday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hitting fresh record highs, but gains were capped as investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and the outcome of high-stakes US-China trade talks. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% in early trading, building on a six-day record streak, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded flat, AP reported. JetBlue Airways surged 14.4% and SoFi Technologies jumped 16.2% after stronger-than-expected results, while Merck fell 7.8% and UnitedHealth Group dropped 5.1% following disappointing earnings and forecasts. UnitedHealth projected at least $16 per share in 2025 profit, well below analyst estimates of $20, according to FactSet. The Federal Reserve's two-day meeting kicked off amid mounting pressure from President Donald Trump for rate cuts. However, most analysts expect the central bank to remain on hold as it gauges the impact of recent tariff hikes. In Stockholm, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng continued negotiations ahead of an August 12 deadline to avert a return to triple-digit tariffs. Additional tariffs on other countries are also set to take effect this Friday if deals aren't reached. Bond yields eased slightly, with the 10-year US Treasury yield dipping to 4.39% from 4.42%. The dollar index held firm ahead of key macroeconomic data releases later in the week. Japan's Nikkei slid 0.8%, but most Asian and European markets closed higher. In earnings, Beyond Inc. rose 3.4% after reporting a smaller-than-expected loss, while broader market sentiment remained sensitive to earnings surprises amid lofty valuations.
