Cumberland Infirmary parking fines cancelled over error

BBC Newsa day ago
Hospital visitors who were incorrectly fined after paying for parking are to have the charges cancelled. What was described as a "large number" of people who parked at Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary between 26 July and 4 August later received notifications they had not paid for a ticket and would be charged up to £70.Annie Gray, who received five fines when visiting her husband, said the situation had been "stressful".Parkmaven, which oversees the car park, blamed an unspecified "technical communication fault", while North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust apologised for "any distress or inconvenience".
As required, Mrs Gray, of Irthington, near Carlisle, paid each time she exited the site. However, within a few days she received letters notifying her she was being fined £70 - or £30 if paid within 14 days - due to having "no valid parking session".Her daughter also received a fine during the same period.
"I think it's disgusting," said Mrs Gray, who used to be a chaplain at the hospital."Parking these days is difficult enough if you're not tech-savvy, especially when people are visiting a hospital."This makes it even more stressful. To do this to people is awful."Mrs Gray appealed against her fines and was told they had been cancelled.
Incorrect penalties
The hospital trust and Parkmaven confirmed charges will be annulled for all and that anyone who has already paid will be reimbursed."We are aware of an error where a large number of people who parked at Cumberland Infirmary between 26th July and 4th August 2025 have been sent a letter incorrectly stating that they did not pay for parking," the trust said."This has understandably caused stress for those who have been incorrectly sent a Parking Charge Notice (PCN)."Parkmaven have stated the issue has now been resolved and have taken steps to ensure this does not happen again."In a statement published on the trust's website, the parking company said cancellation letters would be sent automatically and there would be no need to submit an appeal.

VW introduces monthly subscription to increase car power

German car making giant Volkswagen (VW) has introduced a subscription for UK customers wanting to increase the power of some of its electric who own an eligible car in its ID.3 range can choose to pay extra if they want to unlock the full power of the engine inside the says the "optional power upgrade" will cost £16.50 per month or £165 annually - or people can choose to pay £649 for a lifetime subscription. The firm said it was "offering customers choice" with the feature. Auto Express, who first reported the story, said a lifetime subscription would be for the car rather than the individual - meaning the upgrade would remain on the car if it was sold on.A VW spokesperson told the BBC they believed giving people the option to purchase more power for their car is "nothing new"."Historically many petrol and diesel vehicles have been offered with engines of the same size, but with the possibility of choosing one with more potency," they added that the power upgrades would allow customers to opt for a "sportier" driving experience at any time, "rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price".Such offers have proved controversial for some customers in the past, who are displeased they may have to pay to access features which - in some cases - are already present inside the car they own. 'Nothing new' Other vehicle manufacturers such as BMW have introduced similar subscription-based add-ons in the past, such as for heated seats and steering Mercedes introduced an online subscription service in the US in 2022 which allowed customers to pay to make its electric cars speed up to a survey from S&P Global, some customers may be put off by the cost of in-car subscriptions for features such as connectivity, or by basic functions being split into paid said the number of respondents who said they would pay for connected services had fallen from 86% in 2024 to 68% in is despite a wider embrace of subscriptions in general, with market research firm Juniper Research estimating in 2024 the global subscription economy would reach nearly $1tn (£740bn) in value by 2028. Another 10,000 drivers face Citroen recall over faulty airbags

Citroen has expanded its critical 'stop-drive' airbag campaign, now including C4, DS4, and DS5 models. The urgent recall instructs owners not to drive their vehicles due to a potentially dangerous airbag fault. This expansion follows an initial recall earlier this year, prompted by a report of fatal injuries sustained by a woman in a 2014 Citroen C3 in Reims, France, last year. That incident led to the recall of C3 models manufactured between 2009 and 2016, and DS3s from 2016 to 2019. The recall now affects C4 models built between 2010 and 2011, DS4s from 2010 and 2011 and DS5s produced from 2010 and 2013, resulting in 9,968 vehicles across the UK. A Citroen spokesperson told the PA News Agency: 'To date, more than 66,000 vehicles have had their new replacement airbags fitted. We forecast that the majority of customer vehicles will have their new replacement airbags fitted by the end of September, with the remaining cases handled as swiftly as possible within the coming weeks.' They added: 'In addition, Stellantis has proactively decided to expand the stop-drive to include additional Citroen C4 (2010-2011), DS4 (2010-2011), and DS5 (2010-2013) vehicles. In the UK, this amounts to an additional 9,968 vehicles.' Citroen says that owners can check if their vehicle has been affected and what actions they will need to take by simply typing in their vehicle's VIN number into the brand's 'check tool' on the Citroen website.
