It may be that you're a Wordle newcomer and you're not completely sure how to play the game. We're here to help with that too.
Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone.
Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game's success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats.
The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it's little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily.
To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day's secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren't in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. However, you can still use those letters in subsequent guesses.
You'll only have six guesses to find each day's word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It's also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once.
Wordle is free to play on the NYT's website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak.
If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication's games, you don't have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You'll have access to an archive of more than 1,400 previous Wordle games. So if you're a relative newcomer, you'll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions.
In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day's game.

Looks like AI could be the new Metaverse as CEO Mark Zuckerberg will reportedly 'downsize' Meta Superintelligence Labs and buy in third-party AI models

After blowing tens of billions of dollars to apparently no avail on the Metaverse, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been funnelling yet more billions into AI. But according to a new report in the New York Times, Meta is going to tighten the screw on the money tap. Meta's AI division will be "downsized." First up, Meta announced that Meta Superintelligence Labs will be split into four groups: AI research, AI 'superintelligence', products and infrastructure and other AI hardware. The New York Times claims that, "Meta is also looking at downsizing the AI division overall—which could include eliminating roles or moving employees to other parts of the company—because it has grown to thousands of people in recent years, the people said. Discussions remain fluid and no final decisions have been made on the downsizing." Intriguingly, the report also claims that Meta is considering buying in AI models from third parties to power its products. "The company is also actively exploring using third-party artificial intelligence models," the New York Times claims. Slightly contradicting the belt-tightening narrative, the outlet also says that Mark Zuckerberg, "is sparing no expense and is willing to upend his company to stay relevant in AI." Moreover, it was only in June that Meta invested $14.3 billion in the start-up Scale AI and inserted its CEO, Alexandr Wang, as chief AI officer at Meta. Meanwhile, the company reportedly acquired the services of "of 24-year-old AI prodigy" Matt Deitke courtesy of a $250 million pay deal. Likewise, the New York Times says that Meta's overall capital expenditure could hit $72 billion this year, much of which will be spent on AI. So, yeah, there's still a bit of money knocking around Meta to spend on AI. Apparently, the restructuring is in part a response to tensions within Meta. New hire Alexandr Wang reportedly wants Meta's superintelligence model to be closed rather than open source and has ditched the company's existing superintelligence model, known as Behemoth, to start from scratch. The New York Times also notes the departure of several senior AI operatives from Meta. Overall, this is a pretty mixed narrative, at best. There's the idea that Meta is downsizing its AI activities, all the while spending billions on acquisitions, hundreds of millions on pay packages, and restarting its superintelligence quest from scratch. The reported turmoil certainly puts Zuckerberg's claims just last month that superintelligence is now "in sight" into an uncomfortable, if not implausible, context. Of course, Zuckerberg has form when it comes to, well, optimism over new technologies. He has, after all, renamed the entire company after the Metaverse, a project that's lost a total of $45 billion in three years from 2022, about the same as the annual budget of NASA. Indeed, Reality Labs, the Meta division responsible for the Metaverse, is still losing money, with another $8.64 billion down the drain so far this year. Whether Zuckerberg's quest for superintelligence will be any more successful remains to be seen.

Microsoft re-joins handheld gaming fight against Nintendo's Switch
The record launch in June for the Nintendo Switch 2, a game console that can be played at home or on the go, heralds a new portable race that Microsoft aims to win with a handheld version of its Xbox. Selling itself as the option for discerning, hardcore gamers, Microsoft's Xbox ROG Ally console is available to try for the hundreds of thousands of visitors at the Gamescom trade show in Cologne, Germany. The US tech giant said the devices would go on sale from October 16, but has yet to reveal the price. Born of a partnership with Taiwanese hardware heavyweight Asus, the handheld device includes a central screen with two side grips sporting the same array of joysticks, triggers and buttons as a familiar Xbox controller. "We're really designing and building around an entire ecosystem of devices, to allow people to play where they want, how they want," Jason Ronald, the Microsoft vice president who heads up console development, told reporters. Microsoft's console sales have declined and its Game Pass subscription service has yet to convince large numbers of players, pushing the world's biggest games publisher to seek new sources of growth. - Sights on Valve - At 5.8 million units sold in seven weeks, the Switch 2's mammoth launch figures have other industry players salivating. But "the Switch 2 has that unique thing of games that are nowhere else", locking in fans of beloved Nintendo franchises like Mario or Zelda, Rhys Elliott of the data firm Alinea Analytics told AFP. Microsoft's biggest competitor in the handheld arena is instead another American firm: Valve, which runs the Steam games platform and offers the Steam Deck portable device. Valve says sales of the device have reached several millions since its 2022 launch for the device, which aims at a different market from the Switch. Like the ROG Ally, the Steam Deck was conceived as an on-the-go alternative to a powerful gaming PC. With its portable, Microsoft is targeting "people that already own Xboxes and potentially a PC", said Christopher Dring, founder of the specialist website The Game Business. "The bigger goal of this is engagement," he added. "If you can get your players to play your games more, they will spend more" time and money on them even when away from the console in the living room. Elliott agreed that portables are "complementary" devices to existing consoles. - Sony on the sidelines - For now, Japan's Sony, maker of the PlayStation consoles, is staying out of the portable fight, having withdrawn after 2011's PlayStation Vita failed to match the success of the 2004-era PlayStation Portable, which scored 76 million sales. Sony never revealed sales figures for the Vita. But in late 2023 it dipped a toe back into the scene with a new PlayStation Portal, which incorporates a screen that lets users play games running on their console at home via internet streaming. With no official sales figures, some industry sources estimate around two million sales for the device. "Remote play still impacts a very small portion of the overall audience, but it's growing and is showing strong potential for the future," Mat Piscatella of the gaming data firm Circana has said.
