Letran's streak continues, UPHSD ups final four bid in #NCAA100 WVT
After a week-long election break, #NCAA100 volleyball action returned on Friday at the EAC Sports and Cultural Center for the final lap in the elimination round, seeing Perpetual and Letran defeat San Sebastian and Arellano, respectively, in women's volleyball.
Just a few games before the tournament's Final Four stage, the top-seeded Letran Lady Knights plowed on with their seventh straight win, while the Perpetual Lady ALTAs were secured a critical victory to bolster their playoff bid.
In the first match, the Lady ALTAs downed the Lady Stags in four sets, 25-23, 28-30, 25-16, 25-21, behind Shaila Omipon's 23 points off 21 attacks and 2 aces.
After winning a close first set, Perpetual succumbed to San Sebastian's fightback in an even more tightly contested second, but recalibrated their bearings in the third and the fourth sets to take home the victory.
The win was the Las Piñas-based squad's ninth of the season against only five losses, which strengthened their hold of fourth place, albeit numerically tied with No. 3-ranked Mapúa.
In the second game, top-seeded Letran banked on the record-breaking performance of Bicolano rookie Vanessa Sarie, who exploded for 37 points in the Lady Knights' five-set victory over Arellano, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 17-16.
Sarie's 37 points (35 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace) was not only the Camarines Sur native's career-high, but also an all-time record for most points in a single game in the history of NCAA women's volleyball, beating current San Beda ace Angel Habacon's 36 markers in 2024.
The Lady Knights, who have yet to lose in the second round, extended their win streak to seven– improving to a league-leading 13-2 tally– while the final four-seeking Lady Chiefs dropped to 9-6.

Benilde sweeps top honors as Mycah Go, Rocky Motol named MVPs
NCAA De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde emerged as the big winners of individual awards after Mycah Go of the Lady Blazers and Rocky Motol of the Blazers were proclaimed MVPs in their respective divisions. Go, who had a total 174 points at the end of the elimination round to finish as the 26th top scorer, captured her second MVP plum after also winning the top award in Season 97. The veteran outside spiker, who missed Season 98 due to multiple injuries before making a strong comeback last year, was also the second best server after averaging 0.33 aces per set in the regular season while also emerging as the eighth best spiker with 29.86 success rate. With Go leading the Lady Blazers, Benilde has moved on cusp of another title and is now a victory away from sealing their four-peat run as they take on Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Game 2 of the NCAA Season 100 finals later today. Go will also take home the Best Outside Spiker award alongside Letran's young sensation Vanessa Sarie, who was also named both the Rookie of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Her teammate, Zam Nolasco, bagged the Best Middle Blocker award together with KJ Dionisio of San Sebastian College-Recoletos. Another pair of Letran players in Judiel Nitura and Lara Mae Silva brought home the Best Opposite Spiker and Best Libero plums, respectively. Catherine Domasig of Arellano University was the Best Setter. In the men's division, Motol became the Rookie MVP after leading top-seeded Benilde back to the Final Four, where they eventually fell twice to Letran to bow out of contention. Motol, who collected 330 points through the elimination round, and Barbie San Andres of Mapua University are named the Best Outside Spikers while Vince Himzon and John Austero were awarded the Best Middle Blockers, making Himzon now a three-time best middle in the league. Kobe Tabuga of University of Perpetual Help System was named the Best Opposite Spiker while Wayne Araño was given the Best Setter award. High school volleyball coach Sandy Rieta talks about handling three teams for Perpetual
By JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG,GMA Integrated News Many coaches are already household names in collegiate volleyball like San Sebastian College-Recoletos' Roger Gorayeb, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's Jerry Yee, De La Salle University's Ramil De Jesus, or National University's Dante Alinsunurin. But while he has yet to win his own title in the collegiate ranks, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA's Sandy Rieta is carving his own path as well in high school volleyball. Rieta is the head coach of three different volleyball teams in Perpetual: the women's team in collegiate, and the boys and girls team in high school. Just recently, he steered both Perpetual high school squads to the finals of the NCAA Season 100 Volleyball Fiesta with the boys' team winning the title. It was already his seventh title with the boys team. "Walang pahinga eh," Rieta told GMA News Online after winning the boys' title last Sunday. "Bukas (Monday) tryout naman, tatlong team." [No rest... Tomorrow, we're holding tryouts, three teams.] The work just never stops for Rieta, who also handled previously Alas Pilipinas players EJ Casaña, Vince Lorenzo, and Noel Kampton. Asked how he balanced handling three teams this season — and all contenders, by the way, even if the Lady Altas finished fifth this season — Rieta himself said he asks himself the same question, too. "Minsan naiisip ko na rin 'yan pag mag-isa ako eh," he said in jest. "Lalo na 'pag talo, kailangan makaisa ka para mawala 'yung [pagod]. Ayun, time management, balance." [I sometimes think about that when I'm alone... Especially after a loss, you need to get one back so that the fatigure goes away. It's time management, balance.] Handling three teams in simultaneous tournaments is no easy task. "Katulad ng season na 'to, usually umaga laro ng boys, hapon 'yung girls or alternate sila, so 'pag may laro ang college ng 2:30 p.m. or 12 p.m., magte-training ako sa umaga, usually girls sa umaga, then alis ako, pagbalik ko high school boys." [Like this season, usually the boys play in the morning, the girls in the afternoon or they alternate so when the college teams play at 2:30 p.m. or 12 p.m., I'll hold training in the morning, usually the girls in the morning then I'll leave and when I return, it's the high school boys.] The Las Piñas-based teams also have to leave the campus four hours before their scheduled game, so add to that the travel time needed on top of his training sessions and the game proper. Rieta, however, said he is just happy with what he does. "Ganun din kasi eh, 'pag nasa puso mo, 'di ka rin nakakaramdam ng pagod, 'yung passion mo, tapos masaya ka sa ginagawa mo, hindi ka makakaramdam ng pagod. Maiisip mo lang 'yung pagod 'pag talo, honestly." [It's like that, if your heart's in it, you won't feel tired, if it's your passion, and you're happy with what you're doing, you won't feel tired. You only feel the fatigue when you lose, honestly.] Good thing that Rieta won one this season and perhaps, he can now take even just a short break before starting to prepare for the next season. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
