Brandon Blackstock cause of death: Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband died of melanoma, coroner says

"Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years," his family said in a statement. Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband, talent agent and her former manager, died at his home in Butte, Mont., after a battle with cancer, his family announced on Aug. 7. He was 48. The type of cancer was not initially disclosed. But a coroner told People magazine that the cause of death was melanoma, a form of skin cancer. "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away," a representative for his family said in a statement to multiple news outlets. "Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time." The announcement of his death came a day after Clarkson revealed that she was postponing the remaining August dates of her Las Vegas residency due to Blackstock's illness. 'Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas,' Clarkson announced in a post on Instagram. 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.' Clarkson and Blackstock married in 2013. The couple had two children together: River Rose, their 11-year-old daughter, and Remy Alexander, their 9-year-old son. Blackstock also had two children from a previous marriage. According to People magazine, his eldest daughter, 23-year-old Savannah Blackstock Lee, revealed in July that she is expecting her second child early next year. Blackstock was the former stepson of Reba McEntire, who was married to his father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 to 2015, and is the mother of Brandon's half-brother, Shelby. Narvel Blackstock, who owns the Nashville-based talent agency Starstruck Entertainment, previously served as Clarkson's manager. Brandon Blackstock formerly represented Blake Shelton and Rascal Flatts in addition to Clarkson. Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in 2020. An acrimonious split followed, with the couple's Montana ranch becoming "a point of contention" during the divorce proceedings, according to People magazine. Clarkson "was eventually awarded ownership of the property, even though Blackstock was living at the home at the time, and lost a legal fight to evict him from the ranch." Their divorce was finalized in 2022. In March, Clarkson stepped away from her eponymous daytime talk show for nearly two weeks while a variety of celebrities acted as guest hosts. When Clarkson returned, she cited only 'personal reasons' for her mysterious absence, which stirred speculation among fans that it could have something to do with Blackstock. NewsNation subsequently reported that Blackstock was sick and that Clarkson skipped show tapings to take their children to see him. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. It typically starts on skin that's often exposed to the sun, and can be treated successfully if it is found early. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma in the United States each year. Clarkson's remaining shows at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace this month had been scheduled for Aug. 8-9 and Aug. 15-16. Her next run at the 4,100-capacity venue, which was previously announced, is set for November. This is the second postponement of Clarkson's residency, which opened in July. The first show was abruptly postponed just hours before she was set to take the stage after the singer said that she needed to rest her vocal cords. "The prep and rehearsals have taken a toll on my voice," Clarkson wrote on Instagram on July 4. "I want the shows to be perfect for y'all and I need to protect myself from doing serious damage."

New Charlotte-based dating app for dog lovers to launch soon

For all those tired of endless swiping, a new Charlotte-based dating app called Frolly aims to change the game by matching people through a shared love of dogs. Why it matters: Frolly's founder, Cindy Himmel, hopes the new app brings some joy back to dating when it launches in September. She says the traits dog owners usually have — like being responsible, caring and trustworthy — are foundational for great relationships. "The qualities that people look for in partners are oftentimes the qualities that they exemplify with their dogs," like being adventurous, Himmel said. Context: Himmel and her daughter, Amanda Pietrick, who are both dog lovers, also founded The Artemis Cares Fund to provide low-cost pet care for pit bull owners. Himmel tells Axios the idea for the app began after a conversation in which Pietrick said she ended things with someone because "he wasn't that into dogs." How it works: Frolly is similar to other dating apps, where you'll create a personal profile with your background. You'll also include information about your life as a dog owner. Then you can create a profile for your dog with details like their size, breed and lifestyle — including their social habits and activity level. The app uses artificial intelligence matching algorithms to connect people based on dog-related preferences and lifestyle compatibility. What they're saying: "The dog section encompasses ... basic things like if your dog is spayed or neutered. Are they allowed in your bed? Are they allowed on your furniture? If you have a cat, are they good with a cat? Is your dog good with children? So all the things that might be important to know," Himmel said. State of play: The app is open to all ages, and you don't have to be a dog owner to join. But Himmel says you must be a "dog person." Himmel says she believes there will be plenty of opportunities to find a love match in the Charlotte area, especially since it's such a pet-friendly city. With dog-friendly patios, parks, and activities, she sees even more potential for fun and meaningful dates. "You do not have to have a dog to use the app. Absolutely not. You just have to be someone who shares a passion for them. It's not like everyone has to be obsessed with their dog, but I think they have to be open to their partner's love of dogs," Himmel said. Zoom out: Frolly will be free to users for the first six months after it launches on the App Store and Google Play Store. After that, there will be a $12 monthly subscription fee. Membership proceeds will be donated to local rescue organizations.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar' Soars On Streaming

In between her two Wicked films, Cynthia Erivo has not been taking time off. Just a few months ago, she released her new album I Forgive You, and more recently, she starred in a three-day revival of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Held at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA, the production was heralded as a spectacular retelling of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-penned show. Even though the number of performances and even the thousands of people who witnessed the performances of fellow stars like Adam Lambert and John Stamos (who subbed in for Josh Gad for one night) was extremely limited, the event has led to massive upticks in consumption of the album – all of them, actually. Jesus Christ Superstar Sees a 288% Streaming Spike Between August 1 and 4, the original 1970 concept album, which started it all for Jesus Christ Superstar, experienced a 288% increase in streams in the United States. It racked up 430,000 plays, according to Billboard. That sum is compared to the weekend before the show lit up the famed venue – July 25-28. 1996 London Cast Recording Leads with 583% Jump The 1996 London cast recording enjoyed the most dramatic jump of all versions of Jesus Christ Superstar. Streams of that set rose 583% during the same period, as it collected more than 235,000 plays in only a few days. NBC Live Musical Album NBC adapted Jesus Christ Superstar a few years back as part of its series of live musicals, and the album, which features contributions from stars like Sara Bareilles and John Legend, also grew, thanks to the Hollywood Bowl production. From August 1 to 4, that project saw its tracks played 92,000 times – up 192% weekend-over-weekend. 1973 Film Soundtrack Streams Climb In 1973, a movie was made of Jesus Christ Superstar, and, unsurprisingly, many fans of the musical, as well as those who simply wanted to be a part of the action, turned to the soundtrack on streaming sites. That album's stream count rose to 155,000, up 151% from one weekend to the next. Jesus Christ Superstar Throughout the Decades The original Jesus Christ Superstar concept album became a shocking breakout success in the early '70s. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, emerging as a relatively uncommon success from the musical theater world – even if the title hadn't yet made it to the big stage on either side of the Atlantic. Several other recordings have also landed on the same tally throughout the years, but none have come close to matching the power of the first.
