Wall Street's $9 Billion Ether Hoard Is Just the Beginning
Warning! GuruFocus has detected 1 Warning Sign with NVO.
What's driving this sudden corporate accumulation? Ether's supply mechanics could be part of the answer. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum's fee-burning mechanism means supply can shrink over time. Add staking yields, growing use cases, and institutional access via ETFs like BlackRock's ETHA, and the flywheel starts spinning. ETHA, now at $16 billion AUM, is already seeking approval to enable stakingpotentially unlocking dividend-like returns for mainstream investors. If Ethereum becomes the base layer for everything from tokenized assets to AI settlements, the demand for ETH may surge while supply contracts. That's the structural bull case treasury buyers are leaning into.
Still, the path forward isn't without friction. Solana and other blockchains are moving faster and cheaper. Circle and Stripe are building their own closed systems, which could sideline Ethereum's shared-infrastructure model. And there's a risk that these treasury buyerswho are being cheered as long-term hodlersmight turn into forced sellers in the next downturn. Joseph Lubin, Ethereum's co-founder, acknowledges it's now a race to lock supply before others do. Analysts like those at Standard Chartered are taking notice, lifting their year-end target to $7,500. But the real test? Whether these buyers hold through the next bear marketor vanish when the music stops.

Strategy & bitcoin volatility, HPE upgrade, Instacart downgrade
Market Domination anchor Josh Lipton and Barron's senior market analysis writer Paul La Monica examine what's driving interest in some of the trading session's trending tickers: Strategy (MSTR), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and Instacart (CART). To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Domination. All right, now time for some of today's trending tickers. Barron's Paul La Monica is right here with me. We're going to take a look here at Strategy, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Instacart. First, going to start with Strategy, a company formerly known, of course, as Micro Strategy, seeing shares sliding as one analyst sees more struggles ahead for that name. And Paul, Strategy, a leveraged play really on Bitcoin, and I'm reading in Barron's, the August publication, and what your house is talking about here is they kind of detail the drop in the stock for the past month, and they cite an analyst from Mizuho Hart Paul, who reiterated a sell. That market cap to Bitcoin multiple bound to decline in part, Barron's pointing out here, because of the credit market skepticism of the debt that Sailor's company has issued to finance some of its purchases. What do you make of it? Yeah, I think there are legitimate questions and worries about how much debt Strategy, Micro Strategy, whatever you want to call it, is taking on to buy this massive amount of Bitcoin. And at the end of the day, you can be bullish on crypto, and then you can buy Bitcoin, or you could buy the IBIT ETF. You don't necessarily need to buy MSTR, which now has really de-emphasized its software business in the name of becoming the preeminent Bitcoin Treasury company. It, as you said, it's very leveraged to Bitcoin. It's going to be incredibly volatile, and as we've seen, Bitcoin is still an asset that is incredibly fluctuates very wildly. So that makes it difficult, I think, for investors to have any confidence that Micro Strategy is going to be nothing but as volatile as Bitcoin. Yeah, down there. We should note, I mean, Wall Street loves this name, Paul. I mean, near 90% of a buy on this one, not many skeptics on the street. No, and there's something to be said for what Sailor has done to make them a kind of tertiary enterprise software player into the world's largest Bitcoin Treasury. You do have to take off your hat to that, but it's just a very expensive and risky company. All right, let's move on to another one. Hewlett Packard Enterprise getting lift over at Morgan Stanley from upgrading that stock from equal weight to overweight, noting upside to earnings. So Morgan Stanley Paul, okay, they take HPE to overweight. They're believers. Target 28. Sounds like next earnings announcement, September 3rd. The analyst is looking forward to the analyst day though, to hear, says, given we are likely to get his longer-term forecasts that could help the market more clearly appreciate HPE's future earnings and cash flow power. Analyst saying here he favors HPE and Dell into earnings. What do you think? Yeah, I think HPE, there's a lot going for it. It also has that kind of AI wind at its back. But you know, HPE buying Juniper Networks, that I think is something that analysts are very excited to see how that helps the company. You know, Juniper, of course, was a once market darling competing with Cisco. You know, it's going to be something that I think will increase HP's own offerings as well in, you know, infrastructure and networking. So you know, I think that's why there's some of the bullishness there. All right, final one I want you to take on here, Paul, that would be Instacart. Here with a downgrade at Wedbush. The firm lowering its rating on that stock from neutral to underperform. They go to the equivalent of a sell, Paul. Here's what they say, the recent expansion of Amazon's same-day perishable grocery delivery service has intensified the competitive environment. They say we recognize Instacart may carve out a specialized focus, they say, but we believe consumers will opt for more compelling and value-driven services. They lower their target to 42. Yeah, I mean, Instacart obviously faces a formidable threat, and they already had from Amazon because of its grocery business, because of Whole Foods. But also, I think Walmart, that really is the proverbial 800-pound gorilla in groceries, both buying them in the store and delivery. But Instacart does have some pretty powerful relationships with a lot of the major supermarket chains out there and other retailers. They obviously aren't just delivering from places like, you know, Kroger and what have you. They also have some partnerships with Best Buy and other specialty retailers. So I I wouldn't necessarily say that it's the time to be burying Instacart just yet. There are some companies that have been able to go toe-to-toe with Amazon and and hang in there. I think Instacart might be one of those. Now to your point, this is the only sell I see on the street, by the way. Most analysts still like this one.

Crypto firm which just filed for IPO won't shut down
Gemini, the crypto exchange founded by billionaire Winklevoss twins, has hit the streets with a new campaign around its Bitcoin credit card. On Aug. 19, Ethan Kimmel, the growth lead at Gemini credit card, posted on X a photograph of a print advertisement for the product on a busy street, "Spend Dollars, Earn Bitcoin." The card lets you make purchases and earn rewards in the form of more than 50 cryptocurrencies. "We'll never stay silent," remarked Kimmel, in response to Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss's X post on July 26, in which he accused the global banking giant, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), of not onboarding Gemini as part of an alleged Operation Chokepoint 2.0 against crypto firms. "Sorry Jamie Dimon, we're not going to stay silent," Tyler had said, referring to the JPMorgan CEO. The banking institution had, however, said, 'JPMorgan Chase banks many of the best-known crypto companies in the world and is currently onboarding new crypto clients. It's patently false that we would block this traffic." But it didn't comment on Gemini the crypto exchange doesn't seem to be pulling brakes on its aggressive expansion. The firm recently filed for an initial public offering (IPO), following in the footsteps of other crypto firms like the stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) and the crypto exchange Bullish (NYSE: BLSH). It plans to list its shares on Nasdaq under the ticker GEMI. Gemini founders donate $21M to pro-Trump PAC Founded in 2014, Gemini is one of the most prominent crypto exchanges. The Winklevoss twins, the founders of the exchange, are considered among the world's first Bitcoin billionaires. On Aug. 20, Tyler informed the crypto community on X that he and his brother have donated $21 million in Bitcoin to a pro-Donald Trump political action committee (PAC) called the Digital Freedom Fund PAC. The PAC's aim is to help realize Trump's vision of making America the "crypto capital of the world," he said. It will support pro-crypto candidates in the Republican Party during the midterm elections in November 2026, Tyler added, and criticized the Democratic Party for derailing Trump's agenda. The PAC will also push for "thoughtful" crypto market structure legislation that avoids the pitfalls of overregulation, bloated licensing regimes, and red tape. "We will fight against legislation that attempts to recreate Dodd-Frank for crypto," he said. It will also push for a Bitcoin & Crypto Bill of Rights that codifies the right to own, self-custody, and transact peer-to-peer (P2P) with Bitcoin and other crypto assets, he added. In addition, protections for software developers, anti-central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), fair and open banking access, mandatory rulemaking and exemptions, rejection of regulatory capture, and support for the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) "Project Crypto" are among the agendas on the PAC's table, Tyler underlined. Block's Proto unveils Rig, a 14.1 J/TH ASIC miner with swappable hashboards
Proto just entered the ASIC miner manufacturer landscape with bang, giving bitcoin miners the modular, hashboard-swapping design they have long-desired. Proto, the ASIC miner division of Jack Dorsey's Block, unveiled Rig, its flagship ASIC miner model at a launch event in Dalton, Georgia today. The air-cooled model packs 9 hashboards per unit and clocks in at ~800 TH/s with a nameplate efficiency of 14.1 J/TH. Rig's modular design allows miners to swap hashboards when upgrading without having to purchase new, fully-equipped units ,and it can also be formatted for immersions set ups. Concurrent with the launch, Proto also announced Proto Fleet, an open source ASIC miner software management tool for power management, ASIC fleet management, and unit diagnostics. Proto did not disclose initial pricing for the unit. Enjoying the read? Get our newsletter directly to your inbox on all things Bitcoin-equities by clicking here. The Proto team estimates that the swappable hashboard design will save miners 15-20% when they refresh their fleets and could extend the lifespan of full units to 10 years. 'During our initial explorations, we heard from mining operators that legacy hardware is not optimized for a lot of existing infrastructure. Shoebox machines often leave power unused at the wall, hashrate is limited by the amount of space a machine takes up on a rack, and upgrading from one generation to the next means essentially starting over with entirely new machines,' Proto Hardware Lead Thomas Templeton said. 'Proto Rig is designed to solve for rackspace density, get the most out of existing electrical infrastructure, and make upgrades extremely easy and efficient,' he continued. Rig's form factor should ease headaches and costs for bitcoin miners when they upgrade their fleets, delivering a design choice that miners have long requested from leading ASIC manufacturers like Bitmain and MicroBT. 'Great job on the hardware design … nice to see a supplier actually listen to feedback from industry! Power dense, ease of maintenance / repair in mind, nice square form factor. Very well done,' Upstream Data Founder Steve Barbour commented on the release. Proto hosted the unveiling at Cores Scientific's Dalton, Georgia, where a portion of Core Scientific's 15 EH/s order of the model are actively hashing. Proto plans to ship the bulk of Core Scientific's order in the second half of this year. In a research note, JPMorgan noted that Rig offers a 'compelling design and near best-in-class efficiency.' The note estimates that the ASIC miner manufacturing sector brings in $4-5 billion per in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
