Boxed wine isn't just swill anymore, experts say — here's how to get the most bang for very few bucks

Not all boxes are made equally, some sparing sommeliers seem to think.
Though boxed wines are often regarded as repulsive to bacchants beyond the age of 20, leading wine experts say they actually have some merit — if the consumer is choosy about the candidate in question.
'Whites and rosés can be enjoyed very young, so those are good choices for boxed wine. If you are going for a red, choose a young red and not a type of wine where you want some age on it,' sommelier Grace Hood told HuffPost.
Less expensive boxed alternatives can also be ideal ways to test out trendy variants or labels for the first time.

Of course, this doesn't mean all of the cardboard-cased Chardonnays, Cabernets and Concords are the creme de la creme.
Hood also advised picking a product that's not manufactured by a colossal corporation. This is where harmful — and hangover-inducing — additives like sugar and food coloring typically come into the mix.
As cocktail costs seem to continue soaring with no end in sight — NYC beverage baselines are often beyond $20 — many imbibers are looking to cut corners where they can.
Boxed wines are often cheaper than bottled variants because of the reduced manufacturing rates that cardboard and plastic components typically boast — plus, they're more sustainable for the everyman and the Earth alike, the outlet pointed out.
Some brands are now even offering consumers personal-sized boxes.

'These products were created to minimize the carbon footprint in the wine world and to certainly bring value, convenience and ecology to the consumer,' said Jean-Charles Boisset of California's Boisset Family Estates, of the innovations in box tech back in 2016.
The plastic bag that lines the interior of the box shrinks as wine is released from it — effectively sealing in the remaining stuff and preventing it from being spoiled by oxygen — so it tends to keep better than its corked cousins, and in some cases, can last for up to six weeks.
Traditionalists needn't be terrified of the boxed wine renaissance, though — the classic bottle still reigns supreme. But the box is still creeping up the charts.
As previously covered by The Post, top boxed wine brands to look out for include Black Box, FishEye, Banrock Station and BotaBox from California; French Rabbit and La Petite Frog from France; and Maipe from Chile.
Hood echoed this — and advised keeping an eye out for smaller wine labels with natural ingredients.

It's a disruptive obstacle to the day,' one shame campaigner, Molly Block, told The Post. 'We all share this neighborhood. We are neighbors with one another. Why are we behaving in this way that is disrupting the community that you share with your neighbors?' Block took to social media this month after fruitlessly confronting a man who watched 'his little Pomeranian poop and proceed not to pick it up.' The move felt petty, but Block felt desperate for a change that wasn't being addressed otherwise. 'What can we as a community do to stop this? It's not the dog's fault, you know?' she said. It's a s–thole,' a dog owner, who declined to share his name, said as he walked his pooch through the streets 'Everyone has a dog here, but no one wants to clean up after themselves.' City Councilmember Julie Won told The Post that in addition to investing in trash bins and pick-up bags to curb the issue, providing dog owners with green space to relieve themselves could help end the poop problem. Her office pointed to Queensbridge as a particular hotspot, and called on the city Department of Transportation to return the area under the bridge to the public to add a seventh dog run to Long Island City. 'Investing in designated dog relief areas such as dog parks decreases dog waste on public streets. One of NYC's oldest occupied homes is up for sale in Harlem

A piece of NYC history is on sale on East 128th Street. A pre-Civil War clapboard townhouse — widely considered to be the one of the oldest occupied single-family dwellings in Harlem — has hit the market for $3.25 million. Tucked between two larger and much newer buildings, the ornamented, light green exterior of the home appears much the same today as it did in the 1800's. 9 The townhome's whimsical facade has been lovingly maintained as the neighborhood has evolved. A 1981 landmark report recognized the property as one of Harlem's few surviving frame houses, calling it 'remarkably intact.' It was constructed in 1864, according to the report, back when Harlem was just a semi-rural suburb. The quaint holdout was among the first wave of fashionable row houses on East 128th Street — one of Harlem's first residential developments. The eclectic gem was built in the once-trendy French Second Empire style, defined by mansard roofs, dormer windows and ornamental flourishes. 9 The pre-Civil War home is a miraculous holdout from Harlem's first wave of residential development. Max Mural Photography Its neighbors were demolished and replaced over the years, but this stalwart survivor stood the test of time. The four-story structure last traded hands for $3.6 million in 2015. The pricey purchase made headlines, with outlets reporting buyer Jack Stephenson's plans to host a musical nonprofit in the home. That arrangement eventually ended in a legal dispute, however, and the property is now owner occupied. 9 The entryway to the four-story home. Max Mural Photography The home, which spans 3,225 square feet of living space in addition to an unfinished basement, has been aggressively updated over the past decade. Practical improvements included all new plumbing and electrical systems, as well as modern amenities like walk-in closets, a backyard irrigation system and an open-concept kitchen. While the subzero refrigerator may not be period accurate, plenty of original details remain. Stephenson restored and painted the original fireplaces and molding, according to the listing, as well as the ceramic medallions that crown the home's 12-foot ceilings. 9 The home received new hardwood floors after 2015. Despite the massive renovations, the current sale marks a $350,000 discount from the $3.6 million deal in 2015. Langer said that today's $3.25 million price tag was set by an independent appraiser. It's possible that the comparatively pricey 2015 sale reflected one buyer's enthusiasm for the property's history, rather than its market value. Still, the clapboard abode is a true standout among Harlem's for-sale single-family homes. 'There's a couple of brownstones, but this is the last wood framed house that I've seen,' Langer said.
