Odisha celebrates ‘Rasagolla Dibasa'

Jai Jagannath,' the Governor said. 'Niladri Bije' has been celebrated as Rasagolla Dibasa since 2015.
'In the early days, the sweet was known as 'Khira Mohan' in the temple. It is the same as rasagolla,' said researcher Asit Mohanty, who was instrumental in collecting evidence tracing rasagolla's origin to the Puri temple. 'Our rasagolla is totally different from that of Bengal. Bengal's rasagolla came into existence in 1868, while the sweet originated here over 500 years ago. There is mention of rasagolla in the Dani Ramayan written by Balaram Das,' he asserted.
Maintaining that for centuries devotees have offered rasagolla to Lord Jagannath on 'Niladri Bije', Mohanty said there should be no debate on its origin. 'Let Bengal enjoy its rasagolla and we ours,' he said. People across the State exchange rasagolla to celebrate the day, with sweet shops doing brisk business.- A special function was organised at Pahala, a village along the highway between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, where a slew of sweet shops specialising in rasagolla are located. Noted sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik shared a photo of his creation celebrating the occasion on X.

City schools and colleges celebrate I-Day with patriotic fervour
Ranchi : Educational institutions across the city marked 79th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and patriotic zeal on Friday. Principal Samita Sinha spoke about the importance of patriotism and unity. At Delhi Public School (DPS), the highlight was a skit by nursery students on "Freedom is about playing our responsibilities." The celebration concluded with a message from the principal on guiding the next generation with determination and integrity. Govt schools across the district marked the occasion with Tiranga rallies, cultural programmes, and speeches on the significance of freedom. Markets and streets in Ranchi were decked in saffron, white, and green, with citizens carrying flags and children sporting tricolour badges. The day concluded with community gatherings, patriotic songs, and a reaffirmation of the city's resolve to contribute to a progressive and inclusive India. Proper communication vital for urban growth: Usha
Dhenkanal: Urban transformation can be realised not only by construction but by proper communication of transforming waste materials into wealth, said Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of Housing and Urban Development department. Delivering a special lecture-cum-workshop on 'Governance, Urban Transformation and Role of Public Communication,' at IIMC auditorium, Padhee said government has introduced several schemes and Mukhyamantri Shahri Yojana for the benefit of people and media should play a pivotal role to disseminate information about welfare schemes. Public communication should promote awareness for inclusion of more eligible people to avail government schemes, she said. Urban transformation can come about through recycle and reuse of waste materials into wealth, Padhee said, adding that the State government is taking steps to use plastic materials for construction of road with support of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). 'We cannot check rapid growth of urbanisation, but rural areas should also get urban amenities,' she said. Padhee advised media students to prioritise unbiased reporting to win public trust. In reply to questions of students, she said use of advanced technology has helped in reducing corruption. In response to request of IIMC Regional Director Anand Pradhan, Padhee announced internship facility in departments of Housing & Urban Development and Transport for students of Corporate Communication and Brand Management. Pradhan and Prof Mrinal Chatterjee sought Padhee's consent for training at departments of Housing & Urban Development and Transport for students of Odia and English journalism.

Depts asked not to use the term ‘harijan'
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has asked all its departments, public and educational institutes and others to stop using the term 'harijan' in communications, officials said on Wednesday. The government suggested to the authorities concerned that words like 'Scheduled Caste' in English and 'anusuchita jati' in Odia or other national languages should be used to 'denote persons belonging to Scheduled Castes as notified under Article 341 of the Constitution', according to a letter issued on August 12 by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Class Welfare department. The letter was sent to all the additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries and commissioner-cum-secretaries, the officials said. 'They have been instructed to ensure that the word 'harijan' does not appear in any official communications, records, transactions, caste certificates, publications, departmental names or any other form of use,' an official said. The authorities concerned are also directed to educate their staff and update existing documents and records accordingly, he said. They are also told to submit a compliance report on the action taken on the matter, another official said. The State government's action came in the wake of the guidelines issued by the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), prohibiting the use of the word 'harijan'. These guidelines will be strictly enforced in all government offices, the official said. In 1982, the Centre had asked all State governments not to use the term 'harijan' to refer to Dalits. Following fresh guidelines prepared by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, a similar order was also issued in 2013 to all the States, directing them to ensure non-use of the word 'harijan' not only in caste certificates but also in official communications, the officials said. The Odisha Assembly has also prohibited the use of the word 'harijan', they said.
