City schools and colleges celebrate I-Day with patriotic fervour
At Cambrian Public School in Kanke Road, the celebration featured a flag-hoisting by chief guest Anandamayi Singh. Principal Premlata Kumari emphasized that true freedom means liberation from ignorance, injustice, and poverty. Students presented cultural performances, including a judo and karate demonstration. An inter-house dance competition saw Ganga House take first place.
The school campus resonated with chants of Vande Mataram and Jai Hind at Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali.
Principal Samarjeet Jana hoisted the national flag, followed by a parade and salute from NCC, NSS, and other students.
Lala Lajpat Rai Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School, Pundag honored the sacrifices of freedom fighters. A parade and cultural programs, including speeches and a yoga presentation, were performed by students. Students of Sarala Birla School, paid tribute to freedom fighters through a cultural program featuring songs and dances in various languages, including Odia, Bangla, and Gujarati.
Performances at Surendranath Centenary School included speeches, patriotic songs, and a skit titled "Viksit Bharat Unnat Bharat." Principal Samita Sinha spoke about the importance of patriotism and unity. At Delhi Public School (DPS), the highlight was a skit by nursery students on "Freedom is about playing our responsibilities." The celebration concluded with a message from the principal on guiding the next generation with determination and integrity.
Govt schools across the district marked the occasion with Tiranga rallies, cultural programmes, and speeches on the significance of freedom.
Markets and streets in Ranchi were decked in saffron, white, and green, with citizens carrying flags and children sporting tricolour badges. The day concluded with community gatherings, patriotic songs, and a reaffirmation of the city's resolve to contribute to a progressive and inclusive India.

CM Sukhu announces ₹100cr for disaster-hit families
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced ₹100 crore immediate relief package for disaster-hit families and ₹3,000 crore project aimed at disaster mitigation and livelihood protection. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid.(PTI) The CM, during his 79th Independence Day speech, announced a series of measures to address recurring disasters in Himachal. 'Frequent disasters have caused heavy losses to life and property,' he said. Referring to the massive losses incurred during the 2023 disaster, which caused damages of ₹10,000 crore, Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid. 'Despite the central government's own assessment, Himachal received only ₹1,500 crore, that too after two years,' he said, adding that this year's disasters, especially in Mandi district, have caused severe damage. The state has not received any financial assistance from the Centre so far. 'The state government had already disbursed ₹360.42 crore from its own resources to aid the affected families. I hope the Centre will soon extend financial support to disaster-affected families,' he added. On the education front, Sukhu praised the reforms implemented by the state government, positioning Himachal fifth in the country for quality education. 'Teachers in all government institutions will no longer retire in the middle of the academic session, but at the end of the session,' Sukhu said. He also revealed plans to open 200 CBSE curriculum-based schools and fill 9,535 teaching posts in the coming days. In a bid to bring transparency, Sukhu addressed the issue of corruption in the previous BJP-led government's recruitment processes. 'The Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board, a hub of corruption, has been disbanded,' he said. 'In its place, the Rajya Chayan Aayog will conduct computer-based tests to ensure transparency.' 'Merit-based selection will now include both written exam and interview marks, with stringent measures to combat cheating, including a provision for three years' imprisonment for exam-related offences. For this, the government will bring a bill in the next assembly session,' he said.

Punjab finance and taxation minister Harpal Singh Cheema leads I-Day celebration in Ropar
Ropar: Punjab finance and taxation minister Harpal Singh Cheema hoisted the national flag at the 79th Independence Day celebration held at Nehru Stadium, Ropar, on Friday. Following the flag hoisting, Cheema, escorted by deputy commissioner Varjeet Walia and senior superintendent of police Gulneet Singh Khurana, inspected the parade. Led by DSP Jashandeep Singh Maan, contingents from the Punjab police (male and female), Punjab home guards, various schools and a band participated in the march past. Cheema paid tribute to the freedom fighters, including Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Udham Singh, Madan Lal Dhingra, Lala Lajpat Rai and Diwan Singh Kalepani, whose struggles secured the country's freedom. In the National Achievement Survey 2024, Punjab's education system ranked first, surpassing states like Kerala. This year, 848 govt school students qualified for NEET, 265 for JEE (Main) and 45 for JEE (Advanced). In the health sector, the finance minister announced revolutionary changes. Currently, 881 Aam Aadmi clinics are operational, offering 107 types of medicines and 47 lab tests free of cost. He also announced that a health insurance scheme of up to Rs 10 lakh for every family will be implemented from Oct 2. This scheme, which requires only an Aadhaar and voter card to avail, will cover medical expenses for all citizens of Punjab, regardless of income. Around 3 crore people are expected to benefit from this initiative, which includes impanelment of 552 private and all govt hospitals, with plans to add 500 more hospitals soon. Cheema honoured the district's freedom fighters and veterans with shawls, calling them the pride of the nation whose sacrifices allowed citizens to enjoy freedom today. The event featured a vibrant cultural programme with performances, including choreography, dances and gidda by students from various schools. The sports department of Rup Nagar presented a skit on 'Freedom from Drugs' prepared by Rup Nagar's sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sanjeev Kumar. Impressed by the band performance of Shivalik Public School, Cheema announced a grant of Rs 15 lakh for the school. A play titled 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', written by SDM Dr Sanjeev Kumar and performed by students of Government Senior Secondary School, Phulpur Grewal, was also presented. Moved by the performance, Cheema led all attendees in an anti-drug pledge and personally contributed Rs 21,000 from his salary to the school. "No agreements that would go against the farmers": Shivraj Singh Chouhan on US's demand amid tariff talks
Live Events New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday firmly stated that India will not enter into any agreements that could harm the interests of its farmers, emphasising the paramount importance of safeguarding their rights amidst ongoing trade talks with the US, especially regarding the tariff issues in the country's agricultural and dairy a gathering of farmers in the national capital, the Union Minister noted that there were global voices that had shown concern about India's rapid progress, especially in the context of trade agreements and acknowledged that while India seeks to maintain friendly relations and create fair trade agreements with countries across the world, the spirit of these agreements must be grounded in fairness and equality."In our country, the right of the farmer is paramount, and the right of the citizen is paramount. You know, there are many people in the world who are jealous of our progress. 'What if India makes great progress? Make an agreement with them.' We do make agreements because we see the world as one family. But the spirit of agreement is based on fairness, on equality," he highlighted the agreement made with the UK, where Indian agricultural products would be allowed to enter the UK without tariffs, benefiting Indian farmers . However, he was cautious about any potential trade deals that could jeopardise Indian agriculture."We made an agreement with the UK on equal terms so that the produce of our farmers can go to England without any tax. Many agricultural products will now reach England without tax. But if someone suggests an agreement that allows another country's goods to flood our markets, we cannot compete with them," he Union Minister pointed out the disparity in the scale of farming between India and many foreign countries, stating, "Their farms are massive--10,000, 15,000, or even 20,000 hectares--while our farmers often have just one or two acres, or maybe up to five acres, which is rare. There is no comparison."He also warned that an agreement that allows foreign agricultural products to flood Indian markets could severely harm domestic farmers, driving down prices and depriving them of fair returns."If such an agreement happens, it would kill Indian farmers. Cheap foreign produce will flood the market. If we sell our produce at lower prices, farmers will not get a fair return," he a strong reaffirmation of India's stance, Chouhan echoed the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , asserting that no agreement would be signed at the expense of Indian farmers."But PM Modi said there will be no agreements that would go against the farmers. Their rights will be paramount," he Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation on the 79th Independence Day, reaffirmed his support to protect farmers, saying that he is "standing tall like a wall against policies which are against farmer interest.""If any policy is against India's farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers, Modi is standing like a wall," PM Modi about standing his ground in the era of 'economic selfishness,' he added, "I say this with great experience. If we do that, the world will admit our strength."These remarks come during a time when India is actively involved in the discussions on the Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US, which the two sides could not conclude due to the American demand to get comprehensive access to the Indian agriculture and dairy US is pressuring India to open its agricultural market and subsequently imposing a 25 per cent additional tariff, with Washington calling it a 'penalty' for buying Russian oil.
