Nipah: Containment zone restrictions lifted in Malappuram district

Kozhikode: With no new Nipah cases reported in the district since the death of an 18-year-old girl due to the virus infection on July 1, the Malappuram district administration on Thursday lifted the containment zone restrictions enforced in 20 wards across four panchayats in the district.
Malappuram district collector V R Vinod last week enforced containment zone restrictions in 13 wards of Makkaraparamba panchayat, two wards of Kootilangadi panchayat, one ward of Mankada panchayat and four wards of Kuruva panchayat.
The other general restrictions imposed in the district have also been lifted as no new case was reported in the district.
People in containment zones were asked to avoid gatherings. Shops and business establishments, except medical shops, were asked to function only from 8am to 6pm and all educational institutions within the containment zones were asked to remain closed. Also, as part of general curbs in the district, people were advised to avoid social gatherings as far as possible and wear face masks while venturing out and while in gatherings.

This was decided at the State Cabinet meeting held in the capital on Wednesday (August 13, 2025). Though he tested negative for the virus, Mr. Thomas has been in a coma at a private hospital in Kozhikode for the past one-and-a-half years after being diagnosed with a relapse of Nipah encephalitis. He had initially contracted the infection while attending to a patient during the August–September 2023 outbreak at a private hospital in Kozhikode, where he had been working. He hails from Mardala, near Mangaluru, in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. Mr. Thomas' case was the first reported relapse of the infection in the State, which has experienced several Nipah outbreaks and episodes till now. His brother, Shijo Thomas, told The Hindu that the financial assistance would be of great help to the family. At present, the private hospital where he had been employed is bearing the cost of his medical treatment.

Synopsis The Kerala Cabinet has approved a pay raise for government lawyers, benefiting District Government Pleaders, Public Prosecutors, and other legal professionals, effective retroactively from January 1, 2022.
