Over 2.3 lakh to cast votes in Nilambur
Kozhikode: Over 2.3 lakh voters will vote in Nilambur byelection on June 19, said collector VR Vinod on Wednesday. He told the media that the final voter list has 1,13,613 men, 1,18,760 women and eight transgender voters. There are 7,787 first-time voters, 373 overseas voters and 324 service voters. In the area, 2,302 people with disabilities and 1,370 seniors over 85 can vote from home. Till date, 316 disabled and 938 seniors have applied. Home voting started on Monday for 1,254 approved voters and will continue until June 16. A total of 263 polling stations, including 59 new ones, will be set up for the byelection. Three booths are in tribal forest areas. Eleven booths in seven regions are seen as potentially problematic and 14, including three forest booths, are marked critical with extra security. All stations will have webcasting. There are 1,301 polling staff: 316 presiding officers, 975 polling workers and 10 micro observers. District police chief R Viswanadh said around 1,200 police personnel will be deployed, including one CISF and one AP battalion company. Special security measures under the Centre's 'Special Bandobast Scheme' are in place for Maoist-affected and sensitive areas. Polling will be held on June 19 and counting on June 23.

Nipah resurfaces in Malappuram, 42-year-old woman tests positive
Kozhikode: Nipah virus infection has resurfaced in Malappuram after an eight-month gap, with a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery municipality testing positive. The confirmation came from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. The woman, a resident of ward 2 in Valanchery, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in minister Veena George rushed to the district and chaired a high-level meeting at the collectorate. She said the woman first sought treatment at a private clinic for fever on April 25 and was admitted to the hospital on May 21 samples taken from seven of her high-risk contacts, including close relatives, have tested negative. The state medical board has recommended administering monoclonal antibodies to the patient upon receiving permission from the hospital ethics committee.A three-kilometre containment zone has been declared around the area where the infection was reported. District collector V R Vinod announced nine wards in four local bodies as containment zones: Wards 1–4 of Valanchery municipality, wards 9, 11, and 12 of Marakkara panchayat, and wards 6 and 17 of Edayur committees have been formed to implement the Nipah protocol, with intense contact tracing underway. All identified contacts, whether high or low risk, will be under 21-day are ongoing to trace the source of the infection. Following reports of a cat's death in the area, the animal husbandry department will test samples. A fever survey will be conducted in the affected municipality and nearby minister advised residents to remain vigilant, wear masks, use sanitizers, and avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Masks and sanitizers will be mandatory at the upcoming "Ente Keralam" exhibition in last reported Nipah case in Malappuram was in Sept 2023, when a 24-year-old youth from Thiruvali succumbed to the disease.
