Bail granted in high-profile LTT kidnapping case
LIMPOPO – Family, friends, businessmen and members of the Somalian congregation celebrated on Friday when Adulmani Mohammed (54) was granted bail by the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court.
Mohammed had been in custody since January 8, following his arrest in connection with the October 16, 2023 kidnapping of Louis Trichardt businessman Eddie Gouveia.
Gouveia was abducted by a group of men while closing his shop. He was eventually found safe at Nkuzana village on January 24 and reunited with his family.
A total of 12 suspects were arrested in the case. Throughout Mohammed's court appearances, large crowds gathered in his support.
Members of the Somalian community, including religious leaders, family, and fellow businesspeople, consistently filled the courtroom and picketed outside, demanding his release. During Friday's hearing, bishops handed over a memorandum to the court, pledging their full support and stressing that Mohammed was not a flight risk.
Mohammed was released on R10 000 bail, under strict conditions.
These include no contact with the victim, no interference with witnesses; weekly check-ins at the Mpumalanga Police Station between 06:00 and 20:00; and to surrender all travel documents and a prohibition on applying for new ones.
Police previously confirmed that Gouveia's captors demanded a R15m ransom during his abduction. Mohammed's case has been postponed to June 10, while the bail application for co-accused Khumbulani Nyathi was postponed to June 19.
Following the court's decision, supporters held an impromptu meeting outside the courtroom and successfully raised the bail money, bringing an end to Mohammed's five-month incarceration.
He was warmly received by his supporters upon release.
One family member, Roba Mohammed Sied, who had publicly stood by Mohammed since his arrest, expressed relief and solidarity.
'We've maintained all along that Mohammed is not guilty. We're not here to declare guilt or innocence – we're here to support him and ensure justice takes its course. We hope he adheres to the bail conditions so justice can prevail.'

Bribe-taking NC police officer sentenced to six years
Ex-constable Johannes Shuping was sentenced to six years for soliciting bribes to tamper with a police docket. The Kuruman Regional Court in Northern Cape has sentenced a former police officer to six years' imprisonment for soliciting R10 000 to make a court docket disappear. Ex-constable Johannes Shuping was sentenced after the court convicted him on two counts of corruption from an incident that dates back to 2018. Shuping, then a detective at Kathu police station, re-arrested the complainant, Buti Moepadira, despite his case already being before the court. Former Saps officer jailed for corruption After Shuping arrested Moepadira, the accused offered to 'make the docket disappear' in exchange for R11 000. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the complainant was detained at the Kathu police station due to lack of accommodation in Kuruman. ALSO READ: Police sergeant abuses power, gets 20 years for raping victim inside police station While in detention, Shuping allowed Moepadira to use his cellphone to arrange the payment. 'A R6 000 cash payment was delivered to the accused by the complainant's brother. Shuping continued to demand the outstanding R5 000, prompting Moepadira to report the matter to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks),' Senokoatsane said. In response, the investigating officer launched a sting operation using marked banknotes, as permitted by Section 252A of the Criminal Procedure Act. Caught in Hawks sting after demanding R11k bribe During the operation, Moepadira's brother handed over the remaining R4 000 to the accused. Although the former officer fled the scene, police arrested him a week later at his workplace. 'At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of marked R200 notes, which matched the serial numbers recorded during the operation,' Senokoatsane said. As a law enforcement official, he had a duty to uphold the law, but he chose to violate both the Constitution and his oath. A severe punishment will deter similar misconduct and help restore public confidence in the criminal justice system, Barnett emphasised. Six year direct imprisonment The Kuruman Regional Court agreed and sentenced Shuping to six years' direct imprisonment on each count. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, resulting in an effective six-year prison term. The NPA welcomed the conviction and sentence. Tensions erupt: Magistrate and litigant clash in White River court
A chance meeting in the corridors of White River Magistrate's Court on Monday, led to a tense confrontation between Magistrate Thomas Sibuyi and Barend Byliefeldt, a central figure in an ongoing assault case. Byliefeldt was in court to testify in an assault case he had opened in March 2021, following an incident in which he and his wife, Delia, were allegedly threatened, and he assaulted, at White River Police Station. ALSO READ: Couple seeks sanctuary in police station away from mob of alleged assailants The incident reportedly stemmed from a roadside altercation, after which the Byliefeldts were followed to the police station, where Barend was allegedly assaulted by individuals linked to MAMRA Security Solutions and VIP Protection. The case gained further attention when AfriForum became involved, assisting the couple in their legal battle against the alleged assailants. The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) launched an investigation into MAMRA Security, revealing that the company was not properly registered. ALSO READ: Assault at police station goes viral Multiple criminal cases were opened following the incident, including common assault, pointing of a firearm, and malicious damage to property. Meanwhile, the owner of MAMRA Security Solutions and VIP Protection, Mathlatse Maroga, filed a counter-case against Barend for malicious damage to property and crimen injuria. The matter was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further scrutiny. ALSO READ: Investigation into White River Police Station results to be released next week In the recent altercation, Barend, who is facing separate criminal charges of assault and crimen injuria – one stemming from allegations that he assaulted a Mozambican citizen with a wheel spanner – admitted to Lowvelder on Tuesday that he had directed a racially charged remark at Sibuyi. The remark reportedly escalated the confrontation between them. According to witnesses, chaos erupted when Barend approached Sibuyi to ask a question, but Sibuyi refused to engage. A video of the altercation, recorded by Barend, was later circulated on social media. Court staff intervened to separate the two men, preventing the situation from escalating further. In the footage, Sibuyi can be heard reacting angrily, shouting: 'You called me a racist!' to which Barend responded, 'Yes, you are, but you are!'. He also alleged that Sibuyi attempted to assault him with a brick and used profane language. ALSO READ: SAPS report of findings in White River Police Station saga postponed Barend stated that this confrontation was the culmination of previous interactions, including one in February 2025 in which Sibuyi reportedly reprimanded him over his courtroom attire. In April 2025, an application was filed requesting Sibuyi's recusal due to alleged racial remarks made in court. Adv Johan de Necker presented the application, and Sibuyi subsequently stepped down from the matter. Following Monday's altercation, police requested that Barend leave the court premises. He later stated that he is considering legal action against Sibuyi, pending legal advice. Meanwhile, Delia confirmed that she has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover her husband's legal expenses. She disclosed that she had sold her car to pay for De Necker's legal fees, amounting to R35 000, and has raised $3 459 (± R61 000) so far. At the time of publising, the questions sent to Sibuyi about Monday's altercation remained unanswered. Tully Tonjeni, the chief magistrate in Mbombela, said they view the matter in a serious light.
