Rare Rolex Daytona Expected To Command Up To $1.6 Million At Auction

Forbes16-04-2025

A unique Rolex Cosmograph Daytona will be one of the highlights of Sotheby's Important Watches auction in Geneva on May 11. The 1999 Cosmograph Daytona, Ref.16516, in platinum with a diamond-set mother-of-pearl dial has an estimate of $800,000 - $1.6 million.
It is one of the rarest Rolex watches ever made, according to the auction house. It is a commissioned Rolex wristwatch, from a brand that famously doesn't do privately commissioned limited editions. This model is confirmed for the first time to be the last of four Daytonas commissioned to Rolex in a single order by the same private collector who requested anonymity and created between 1998 and 1999. It comes to auction for the first time.
All four watches have the same reference number 16516, the last digit, '6,' refers to the use of platinum, a first for a Daytona, Sotheby's said. For more than a decade, the automatic Daytona was offered only in stainless steel, two-tone steel and gold, yellow gold and white gold. An exception was made in 1999 when one person was granted a Cosmograph Daytona rendered in platinum. The first time Rolex started producing platinum Daytonas in a series was in 2013, to mark the 15th anniversary of the model. 'This highlights the historical importance of this special commission created nearly 15 years earlier,' Sotheby's said in a statement.
The existence of a platinum Zenith-powered Daytona was, for many years, a myth fueled by speculations that swirled around one name in particular: Patrick Heiniger, Rolex's CEO from 1992 to 2008. Heiniger is believed to have been seen wearing a platinum automatic Daytona before they were made in a series. Until Sotheby's unearthed the first known example in 2018, the story was widely considered as being apocryphal within the watch community.
The four dials in the commission are all different, making each watch unique. This is the last of the four watches from the commission coming for the first time on the market. This makes it the last chance for a collector to be the first to acquire a piece of Rolex history, Sotheby's said.
This Rolex Daytona, with a mother-of-pearl dial set with ten diamonds, was manufactured by Rolex in circa 1999 and comes with its certificate and accessories. The other three in the series featured a dark mother-of-pearl dial, a lapis lazuli dial and a turquoise dial. This example being the only one set with diamonds. All three were sold by Sotheby's way above their initial estimate in 2018, 2020 and 2021, with the lapis lazuli hardstone example achieving a world record price of $3.2 million at Sotheby's 2020 Hong Kong sale.
'A milestone in the history of the Cosmograph Daytona, its rarity, provenance and superlative craftsmanship make this 1999 Cosmograph Daytona, Ref.16516 with a diamond-set mother-of-pearl dial, one of the most important examples ever to be presented at auction. It is also an exceptional book ending to the sale of this extraordinary commission of four masterpieces, three of which have already found new homes through previous Sotheby's sales,' said Benoît Colson, head of Watches, Sotheby's Geneva.

Wells Fargo calls this e-commerce stock an 'under-the-radar' AI story

Investors should pick up shares of Shopify as the company continues to innovate in an increasingly AI-powered e-commerce industry, according to Wells Fargo. Analyst Andrew Bauch reiterated his overweight rating on Shopify shares and lifted his price target by $18 to $125, which suggests the stock has about 19% upside ahead. Bauch said Shopify has a strong product portfolio and strategic partnerships in artifical intelligence that will allow it to capture similar market share in "agentic" commerce as it does in traditional U.S. e-commerce. Agentic commerce refers to AI agents acting on behalf of the customer or business in e-commerce transactions such as managing inventory, giving customized recommendations and executing payments and other tasks. "While not typically perceived as an AI play, we believe Shopify's AI efforts are differentiated and can serve as another important growth & efficiency driver for years to come," Bauch wrote in a Friday note to clients, calling the stock an "under-the-radar AI story." "Overall, we see AI as an important piece to the Shopify story, and see the business as well-positioned to ride the wave, rather than getting knocked off course. We're taking our growth and margin estimates up modestly on alleviating tariff risks, and the multiple higher on AI confidence," he added. Shares of Shopify are up nearly 3% this year. The stock took a hit in early May after it reported mixed first-quarter results and issued a weak forecast for the current period. However, shares have jumped roughly 17% over the past month following an announcement that Shopify would be included in the Nasdaq 100 index. SHOP 1Y mountain Shopify stock over the past year. According to Bauch, Shopify can be seen as a "thematic AI story" given that its employees leverage AI internally, it offers differentiated AI-powered merchant solutions and is growing partnerships with leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Meta and Perplexity. Shopify and Meta share a longstanding partnership that allows Shopify retailers to sync their products to a catalog on Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms, therefore growing their reach and sales opportunities. Shopify merchants can also use Meta's advertising tools to target ads and track their customers. In addition, AI-powered search engine Perplexity last year announced it will use Shopify technology for its AI-powered shopping tool called "Shop like a Pro." "While some may perceive the AI wave as a threat, we see layers of opportunity via use cases, efficiencies, and adoption," Bauch said. The analyst projected a $50 billion dollar gross merchandise value, or GMV, opportunity for agentic commerce by 2030, with roughly 30% growth annually between now and then. That, he said, is similar to the early days of e-commerce.

Shopify, Citi named signature picks at Wells Fargo

-- Shopify could emerge as an under-the-radar beneficiary of the artificial intelligence boom, according to Wells Fargo, which called the stock its signature pick, raising its price target on the stock to $125 from $107. Brokerage called the Canadian e-commerce firm a 'thematic AI story.' While Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) isn't typically viewed as an AI play, Wells Fargo said its internal AI adoption, AI-powered merchant tools, and partnerships with major players like OpenAI, Meta (NASDAQ:META), and Perplexity point to 'layers of opportunity' across user experience and merchant efficiency. The brokerage expects AI to reshape e-commerce by enabling personalized shopping, automating customer service, and optimizing pricing and inventory. Shopify's positioning, it said, could allow the company to gain share in what it calls 'agentic commerce,' a market it estimates will reach $505 billion in gross merchandise value by 2030. Internally, CEO Tobi Lütke has mandated AI adoption across the company, limiting new hires to roles AI cannot fill today, as per analyst. Wells Fargo said this cultural shift supports Shopify's long-term margin outlook and gives it confidence in the company's ability to maintain flat headcount while growing. Meanwhile, on Citigroup (NYSE:C) was also named signature pick. Brokerage said the ongoing restructuring, including Thursday's announcement of 3,500 job cuts in Asia, highlights progress on costs, though only a fraction of financial benefits are reflected in current numbers. Citi is about three-quarters through its restructuring, Wells Fargo said, but has captured only a quarter of the expected financial gains. The firm expects expenses to fall through 2026, with efficiency ratios improving to 59% by 2027 from 72% in 2023. The confirmation of a new Federal Reserve vice chair is also seen as supportive, especially if regulatory scrutiny becomes more flexible, easing compliance burdens tied to past consent orders. CPA plans more than $500m acquisitions investment

Crete Professionals Alliance (CPA), an accounting platform supported by Thrive Capital, is looking to invest more than $500m to acquire US-based accounting firms over the next two years. The initiative aims to implement OpenAI-powered AI technology to increase operational efficiency, reported Reuters citing company executives. Established in 2023, CPA has rapidly expanded, now reporting more than $300m in annual revenue and incorporating more than 20 accounting businesses. This growth is said to have positioned it as one of the fastest-growing firms in the US accounting sector. The company has a workforce of 900 across 17 offices, and also has a presence in Asia. The firm's expansion has been fuelled by significant investment from backers including Thrive, ZBS Partners, and Bessemer Venture Partners. CPA plans to leverage both its cash flow and external capital to fund further acquisitions, taking majority stakes in local firms and bolstering them with support in recruitment and administration. Co-founder of Crete PA and ZBS Partners, Jake Sloane, has a history of developing roll-up businesses across various industries. In partnership with Thrive since May 2024, he has focused on harnessing AI to empower accountants to grow their client base and manage increased workloads. Thrive's in-house tech team, in collaboration with OpenAI, is crafting customised tools for the accounting industry, ranging from data mapping to memo writing. Reuters reported that Bennie Lewis, president at Assurance Dimensions, a Crete-owned firm in Tampa, Florida, highlighted the practical benefits of AI in audit testing, noting significant time savings for his team, enabling more focus on client engagement. Sloane emphasises that their roll-up strategy differs from conventional private equity models by allowing practices to retain a minority equity stake, ensuring that original shareholders stay actively involved. Kareem Zaki, a partner at Thrive, pointed out the necessity of going beyond merely selling software to add value in the intricate accounting sector, the news publication reported. Zaki stated: "As full-stack operators of the accounting firm, we can take all the software elements, the operational elements, and be able to flow that through into the end customer experience." According to Reuters, Sloane expressed that the objective is not to supplant accountants with AI, but rather to augment service quality while human professionals foster trusted client relationships. Sloane said: "I don't believe AI is something that will fundamentally eradicate the need for accountants."
