NASA+ lands on Netflix: Stream live rocket launches, spacewalks & more soon

Business Standard15 hours ago
NASA+ lands on Netflix: Netflix is going interstellar—literally! In a game-changing move, the streaming giant has teamed up with Nasa to bring the cosmos closer than ever before. Starting later this summer, Netflix subscribers will get access to NASA+, the space agency's official streaming service, offering front-row seats to real rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, and breathtaking live views from the International Space Station—all without leaving the couch.
In a statement released on June 30, Nasa said the partnership is part of its mission to inspire a global audience. While NASA+ will now stream on Netflix, the space agency confirmed that all content will continue to be free and ad-free on its official app and website, where viewers already tune in for live coverage and original programming.
Netflix-Nasa's collab for the first time
This deal marks the first time Netflix will feature Nasa's live programming. The platform has already experimented with live content, like comedy specials and sports, but this is its first step into live space coverage.
'The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,' Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, said in the release.
This partnership comes at a time when commercial space launches are booming, especially thanks to Elon Musk's company, SpaceX. In just the first half of 2025, SpaceX has already completed 81 rocket launches, according to Space Explored. It's also the only US company approved to carry astronauts to the International Space Station.
At the same time, NASA continues to support missions close to Earth, in what's called low-Earth orbit.
As for Netflix, the platform now has over 700 million users worldwide. Its shares have hit record-high prices, rising by nearly 51 per cent since the start of the year.
About NASA+
NASA+ is Nasa's own ad-free streaming service, launched in 2023 and already available for free via the NASA app and website. It offers documentaries, mission footage, educational videos, and live broadcasts, all without ads.
This Netflix partnership is not Nasa's first move into popular streaming. Earlier this year, they launched a live 'FAST' channel on Prime Video as well. But with over 700 million users, Netflix could help Nasa reach an even bigger global audience.
When will this partnership happen?
The NASA+ section on Netflix is due to launch in summer 2025, although exact dates haven't been confirmed yet. Along with live streams, viewers will get behind-the-scenes clips, expert interviews, and in-depth documentaries on space science and exploration.

Shukla In space: Benefits far outweigh cost, says Isro chief

The Rs 548 crore spent on the mission is a fraction of what India would have otherwise needed to spend on replicating the same training, exposure and systems-level experience, Isro chairman V Narayanan told TOI, in his first exclusive interview about the multinational commercial mission. Speaking from Houston, Narayanan said that the learning outcomes — spanning astronaut training (for two astronauts), mission operations, and hardware-software-human interface — cannot be measured purely in monetary terms. 'For a country of 140 crore people, what we've spent is only marginal,,' Narayanan said. For that, he said: 'We've gained access to infrastructure and experience that would otherwise require thousands of crores.' If one looks at the per capita cost on the Indian population, it adds up to around Rs 4 per head. Look Beyond Rupee Figure Narayanan, dismissing observations that Ax-4 is 'just a commercial mission', said discussions on such strategic missions must be rooted in long-term capability building rather than short-term financial arithmetic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Morocco: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo 'For a programme like Gaganyaan , which spans Rs 20,000 crore including follow-on missions, these early investments are necessary. Training, confidence, exposure, systems understanding — these are foundational,' he said. He added that maturity in public discourse is essential. 'People must recognise that not all benefits can be quantified. But they can certainly be measured in preparedness and capability,' he said. Five Takeaways Narayanan identified five key areas where Ax-4 will directly strengthen India's human spaceflight capabilities: Training exposure, confidence building, operational experience, systems-and-process understanding, and cross-disciplinary learning. 'Our astronauts trained in world-class facilities simulating space conditions, including microgravity and life-support systems. Each hour of training they've undergone would cost crores if we were to replicate the infrastructure ourselves,' he said. He added that interacting with seasoned astronauts — including those who have flown to space multiple times or performed several spacewalks — helped boost the confidence of Indian crew members and mission teams. Astronauts — Shux and his backup Group Captain Prashant Nair — learnt how to function in space as a team, handle real-time challenges, and carry out experiments. He said working on and observing the mission to ISS has given India insights into module design, layout, onboard systems, and processes that will feed into future Gaganyaan and space station designs. 'We will, of course, have our own design and technology, but all this experience will help us develop those better,' he said. Isro Engineers Narayanan, who is leading efforts to ensure astronaut safety, said he has himself gained from observing operations in Houston. 'From data handling to high-level system safety discussions, our understanding of the end-to-end process has grown. This cannot be acquired by simulation or literature review alone,' he said. He added that the experience is equally valuable for backroom mission teams and decision-makers, who will now have real-world references to draw upon while preparing for Gaganyaan. TOI had reported last week about some specifics the Isro team is learning back in Houston, where mission control for Ax-4 is. Space Station India plans to build its own space station after the Gaganyaan crewed flights. Narayanan said direct exposure to the ISS environment will inform the design, configuration, and operational planning of the proposed Indian facility. 'We had only studied the ISS on paper. Now we are seeing it in action. We may not adopt the same model, but this will help us make informed design choices,' he said.

Anil Menon: Who Is NASA Astronaut Whose Wife Went On Private Spacewalk Mission In 2024?

Last Updated: NASA said it is sending Anil Menon for his first mission to the International Space Station as a flight engineer and Expedition 75 crew member in June 2026 Selected to be an astronaut in 2021, Anil Menon will make his first trip to space as a flight engineer and Expedition 75 crew member in June 2026. NASA said it is sending Menon for his first mission to the International Space Station next year, and he will be launching aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft with cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. The premier space agency said after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the trio will spend approximately eight months aboard the orbiting laboratory. Anil Menon, who is a NASA Artemis astronaut candidate graduate, will conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to help prepare humans for future space missions. Fun fact: his wife Anna Menon, who worked for NASA before joining SpaceX, went for a private spacewalk mission last year. She is a lead space operations engineer at Elon Musk's company and has written a children's book about space titled Kisses from Space. Like his wife, he has also worked for SpaceX, serving as the first flight surgeon while helping to launch the first crewed Dragon spacecraft on NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 mission and building SpaceX's medical organisation to support humans on future missions. He served as a crew flight surgeon for both SpaceX flights and NASA expeditions aboard the space station. Menon graduated with the 23rd astronaut class in 2024. He began preparing for his first space station flight assignment after completing initial astronaut candidate training. He still practises emergency medicine at Memorial Hermann's Texas Medical Center and teaches residents at the University of Texas residency programme in his spare time. First Published:
