Cong unit distances itself from Tharoor delegation row
Kochi: Amid the controversy over the Centre choosing
for international delegations formed to explain India's position on
, opposition leader VD Satheeshan said on Sunday that the opinion of the party's national leadership will also be the opinion of the state leadership in this matter.

Satheeshan told the media that the party's national leadership should speak about Tharoor. He said Tharoor is a CWC member and it is not the state unit's place to comment on him. He added that the Congress does not work in a way where the state controls the national party.
Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan asked Tharoor to focus on his main duty as a Congress MP. He said Tharoor could take up international roles only with the Congress leadership's permission.
Speaking to a TV channel, he said Tharoor had two roles—one as an international figure with his own views and the other as a Congress MP.
He said Tharoor should act with the party's knowledge and approval. Tharoor can work in the international arena, but it should not weaken the party he represents. He added that Tharoor is not a leader of small stature.
Meanwhile,
's ally
said the Congress has already accepted Tharoor's inclusion in the delegation and called it an internal matter.
IUML state chief Sadikali Shihab Thangal said there was no need to bring politics into it. He said it was India's stand and all parties in the country should support it, which they are doing.
IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said the delegation was sent to explain the reasons behind India's strike against terrorism after Pahalgam attack and there is no need for any controversy.
Meanwhile, responding to former KPCC chief K Sudhakaran's remarks about the selection of a new president, Satheeshan said Sudhakaran was not unhappy.

He said the media keeps asking Sudhakaran questions every day and should stop following only the Congress. "You still haven't answered how many years Rajeev Chandrasekhar was in the BJP. Have you checked how he became an MP twice? He says he is a Malayali, but has he ever worked as a booth president here? Has he served on any committee before? What did he do for Kerala in his five years as a central minister? The media won't talk about that," he said.
He claimed the media is trying to belittle the appointment of someone with over 50 years of political experience as KPCC chief. "Congress will stay strong. You said it would explode like a bomb, but nothing happened," he added.

16th Census: 'Changed his mind?' Opposition questions PM Modi over missing 'caste' word in notification
NEW DELHI: Centre has come under the circle of skepticism again over missing "caste" word in the gazette notification issued for India's 16th census on Monday. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his changing stance on the caste census over the years and asked if he had again "changed his mind" after ensuring that the upcoming census would include caste enumeration. "What is new in the notification that has come today - it has been said in this notification that the census will be conducted in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand in October 2026 and in other states of India in March 2027. The announcement made on April 30 in this regard has been repeated again. However, it only talks about census, not caste census. Why caste is not mentioned in it - has PM Modi changed his mind?" Ramesh asked. The gazette notification does not mention the word "caste" in it. However, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who posted the notification on X, said, "Gazette notification issued for India's 16th census with caste enumeration!" Likewise, Union home minister Amit Shah, who reviewed the preparedness of 16th Census on Sunday said that the "census will include caste enumeration for the first time". "Reviewed the preparations for the 16th Census with senior officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Everybody Is Switching To This Enterprise Accounting Software [Take a Look] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Tomorrow, the gazette notification of the census will be issued. The census will include caste enumeration for the first time. As many as 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh census functionaries will conduct the operation with cutting-edge mobile digital gadgets," he had said. Jairam Ramesh, however, cited past records when PM Modi opposed the caste enumeration while also questioning no mention of any deadline. "PM Modi says on 28 April 2024 - Those who talk of caste census have the thinking of 'Urban Naxal'. Modi government gives an affidavit in the Supreme Court on 23 September 2021 saying that we will not conduct caste census. This is against our policy. Even on the question asked in the Lok Sabha, the Modi government said that we will not conduct caste census, we oppose it. But suddenly the Modi government takes a U-turn on April 30, 2025 and says that caste census will be conducted. That is, the government had to take this decision under pressure from the Congress party, Congress President Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Mr. Rahul Gandhi," he said. "That is, there is no deadline in this. Modi government has issued this notification just to make headlines. There are many questions in this matter and we will continue to pressurize that 'Telangana model' should be adopted at the national level," he added. The ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Monday issued a notification stating that the 16th Census will begin in snow-bound, non-synchronous regions of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand in October 2026, with the rest of the country to follow in March 2027. "In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027," the MHA notification read. The reference date for India's 16th Census will be March 1, 2027, except for Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, where it will be October 1, 2026. Additionally, Union minister Vaishnaw announced on April 30 that caste enumeration will be included in the upcoming census, following a decision by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.

Why an American farmer is suing the Trump administration over farm aid
A dairy farmer from Wisconsin, US, has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming he is being treated unfairly under US Department of Agriculture (USDA) programmes that continue to favour women and minority farmers. The lawsuit, filed on Monday by the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, argues that the USDA is violating the Constitution by offering different levels of financial support based on race and gender. The case was filed on behalf of Adam Faust, a dairy farmer who previously challenged similar programmes during Joe Biden's term. In 2021, Faust was part of a successful lawsuit that blocked a loan forgiveness plan designed for 'socially disadvantaged farmers.' A judge had ruled that the race-based eligibility in that programme was unconstitutional. The programme was later suspended and repealed by Congress in 2022. In a written statement shared by the Wisconsin Institute and quoted by AP, Faust said, 'The USDA should honour the President's promise to the American people to end racial discrimination in the federal government. After being ignored by a federal agency that's meant to support agriculture, I hope my lawsuit brings answers, accountability, and results from USDA.' The lawsuit alleges that three current USDA programmes treat farmers differently than others. Faust claims he is being charged a $100 fee in a dairy support scheme that minority and female farmers do not have to pay. Another programme guarantees up to 95 per cent of loan values for women and racial minorities, but only 90 per cent for white farmers. Faust says this makes it harder for him to secure loans. In a third example, Faust is building a manure storage system that could be partly funded through an environmental scheme. However, the lawsuit argues that only 75 per cent of his costs are covered, while up to 90 per cent can be reimbursed for minority farmers. In April, the Wisconsin Institute warned the USDA in a letter that legal action would follow unless it changed the programmes. Six Republican members of Congress from Wisconsin also called for an investigation. The law firm, which has brought similar lawsuits in 25 states, said it preferred not to go to court but added, 'there is no excuse for this continued discrimination,' according to AP. Trump administration has not yet commented on the case. A spokesperson, Anna Kelly, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday, AP reported. Trump has promised to remove diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies from the federal government as part of a broader shift towards merit-based programmes.

Cong flags caste exclusion in census notification, BJP brings up Karnataka caste recount
The Congress on Monday questioned why the Census notification was silent on the inclusion of caste and whether this was 'another U-turn' by the government. The Union Home Ministry's gazette notification Monday declared that the Census would be carried out in 2027. On April 30, the government had announced that the population census would include a caste census. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had then described it as a 'historic decision' by a government 'committed to social justice'. Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said the gazette notification was silent on the inclusion of caste in the 16th Census. 'Is this yet another U-turn by the ustad of U-turns? Or will details be announced later?' asked Ramesh. He described the notification as a 'damp squib' and said it 'merely repeats what had already been announced on April 30'. 'It is entirely because of the persistence and insistence of the Indian National Congress that the PM surrendered to the demand for a caste census. He had called Congress leaders urban Naxals for making this demand. Both in Parliament and in the Supreme Court, the Modi Govt had rejected the very idea of a caste census — which it announced 47 days back,' said Ramesh. He said the government should adopt the Telangana model for not just caste enumeration but also to bring out data on caste-wise socio-economic parameters. The BJP, in response, accused the Congress of having cheated India's OBC and EWS communities throughout its stint in power. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav asked who would pay the Karnataka state exchequer the `165 crore spent on conducting a caste survey in the state, which would now be conducted again. He alleged that the Congress, under the garb of social justice, merely aimed at ensuring social engineering and 'appeasement politics'. 'It was only after the Modi government came that issues related to reservation in universities and schools were sorted but people from these communities also came out of poverty… Karnataka is the latest example of this — the Congress was never with the OBC, the EWS,' Yadav told reporters on Monday. 'Who is responsible for the costly exercise in Karnataka? The re-survey is political cover for appeasement, to instigate certain communities,' he alleged. Yadav questioned whether an 'extra-Constitutional body like the NAC (National Advisory Council) was at play' in Karnataka as well. Congress's Ramesh responded by saying in another statement that 'history should be kept aside'. 'The BJP withdrew its support to the VP Singh government on the Mandal Commission in August 1991, and they started the Kamandal agitation to counter the Mandal agitation. Let's not get into this history. I can also go into the history of how the RSS opposed the Constitution of India beginning in November 1949; how Yogi Adityanath has opposed reservations; and how RSS leaders, including Mohan Bhagwat, have opposed reservations. So let's keep history aside,' he said.
